The sound is really superb , I agree with you James such fresh sound they could have been recorded last week. With the maestro in charge ,pure heaven. What a great orchestra the Philarmonia (old or new) was.

I think that the old cliche of Klemperer being slow and ponderous can be put to bed once and for all. Thanks for posting.

I am so glad that these recordings are still around...the all-around best...the one time when digital can be appreciated, since it makes them sound like they were recorded last week...Thank You!!...

I have a card signed by Klemperer around the time he broke free from the damn asylum. It is one of my most prized possessions!

Klasse!

Sad that the tempi are a little slow but the sound!

Interesting to note that at around the same time as OK recorded these relatively "slow" Beethoven symphonies (in the late 1950s), his Brahms and Bruckner were still relatively quick.

I don't find this particularly slow myself, rather to my ears this and the 2nd have a refreshingly unhurried yet colorful and lively vibe. Maybe we've all become too accustomed to dubious 'period' practice in recent decades.

@Clem Teetonball We've become accustomed to hectic, frenetic tempos, which I consider a deplorable trend, so that when many of us hear something played at a reasonable tempo, it sounds boring.
At an excessively fast tempo, we can miss all the wonderful felicities in the music along the way, and instead get a virtual blur.
Personally, I think it's wonderful to hear this work and the 2nd Symphony given the stature that they both deserve, rather than fluffed off as insignificant works.
