- Here is the second video from The Dickinson Ensemble's 3/3/24 concert. This is "These are the Days." Poem by Emily Dickinson and music by George Boziwick.
The performers are:
Jennifer Haworth, soprano
Herine Coetzee Koschak, cello
Miles Andrew Sutton, oboe
Don Skoog, marimba
The poem, like all ED's verse, functions on several levels. On the surface it's about Indian Summer and the "fraud" of a beautiful day right before winter comes. On a deeper level it's about the passage of time, the seasons, the journey thru life, and Dickinson's "Last Communion." not in church, but in the fields, with "a Bird or two", and with the last Bee of summer.
These are the days when Birds come back--
A very few--a Bird or two--
To take a backward look.
These are the days when skies resume
The old--old sophistries of June--
A blue and gold mistake.
Oh fraud that cannot cheat the Bee.
Almost thy plausibility
Induces my belief.
Till ranks of seeds their witness bear--
And softly thro' the altered air
Hurries a timid leaf.
Oh sacrament of summer days,
Oh Last Communion in the Haze--
Permit a child to join--
Thy sacred emblems to partake--
Thy consacrated bread to take
And thine immortal wine!

I agree! Jenny is amazing. It is an honor to play with the whole group.
