  • A lot of people ask what I love most about living in Winnipeg - and to be honest, I couldn't narrow it down to just a few items - so here are 25 interesting things I love about living in Winnipeg with your local Realtor, Jennifer Queen. Let me know if you think I missed anything!
    1. Winnie the Pooh’s name can be traced back to Winnipeg…
2.Low taxes - we only pay GST on services (no HST) as well as on our Gas!
    3. Pro sports team. Hockey Fans - we were able to bring the Winnipeg Jets back to the city in 2011 and we are passionate fans. The same goes for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers as well as the Football club. All of our stadiums and arenas are state of the art. UPDATE: Bombers WON the Grey Cup!!!
    4. We are some of the friendliest people. Our license plates prove it.
    5. We have an abundance of greenery - parks, walkways, or even hiking trails abundant throughout the City.
    6. The river skating trail - in the Winter, you can head down to the Assiniboine River and skate for miles.
7.Weather - it is cold here. Lots of snow. But with snow comes a lot of outdoor activities. Skating on the river trails, sliding at various parks, etc. I would argue that we have some of the most beautiful summers here!
    8. Coffee spots. Almost everywhere you go, you can find an independent coffee shop, and they are full of creative minds.
    9. Craft Brewery options. Do you like to try local beers, etc? Then boy, do we have options for you! The City of Winnipeg actually has a cool flight that I will add a link to below. You can grab one of these passes for as low as $29 and it allows you to visit 4 different brew pubs and have 4 flights.
    10. Family-centered community: If you look through the demographics in each neighbourhood, you will find that the majority of them do have a large proportion of children at home.
11.All food philosophies are supported here. Do you wish to eat Vegan - there are great options. What about a ketogenic diet? There are options for that too!
12.We may be far from the coast, but you really should try our Sushi. It is really delicious. That does catch some off guard, but trust me, we have great sushi here!
13.We are a bike-friendly city (biker’s paradise) - bike lanes down major thoroughfares
    14. The Red River and Assiniboine River - and where they meet (at the forks). There is great history here to learn, and some beautiful scenery as well.
    15. Which brings me to my next point- the floodway. After the flood of ’97, the City of Winnipeg took on an initiative to develop a floodway that diverts water away from the city in times of higher water levels.
    16. Walkable neighbourhood options. Some areas you don’t even need to own a car, everything is within walking distance. These are more few and far between as Winnipeg is quite spread out and does have more limited public transit - but there ARE neighbourhoods where this is feasible.
    17. Commutes are very minimal. Our city is small and it isn’t unheard of to get from one side of the city in 30 minutes.
    18. A slower pace - The residents here enjoy a more relaxed pace than many larger cities within Winnipeg. Our commutes are shorter and it means we get more time to sit and enjoy time with our families.
    19. Lower cost of living. Our average home price here is about half of the national average, which means incredibly affordable living prices.
    20. Diversity - we have one of the most diverse populations here, culturally, racially, and religiously - and that has made us incredibly welcoming.
    21. Our electricity costs are some of the lowest in the country - We are a huge hydro-electric exporter which means that we happen to have kilowatt hour rates that are 1/3rd of our counterparts in Ontario.
    22. Great education options!
    23. We are a larger city of over 700,000 people, but you will find there is still a small-town feel. It is hard to go somewhere and not recognize someone!
    24. Geographically, we are also located in a great spot. We are about a 1-hour drive from the American Border, located centrally within Canada - so you can catch a direct flight to the East or West Coast from here, but also you can hit a lake in almost an hour drive in any direction from the city center.
    25. Affordability - we have some of the lowest costs here when it comes to extracurriculars, whether it be some of the programs you participate in from the City of Winnipeg’s Leisure Guide, dining out, or getting tickets to a sports game.

    Hi Jennifer!
    I love your content!
My wife and I currently live in the GTA Ontario. Because of the cost of living here, we are now starting to research other provinces. We love camping here in Ontario. What could you say about the camping scene in Winnipeg/Manitoba? Could you make a content about it? Thank you!

Interesting - and not necessarily my area of expertise but I'm always down for a challenge. What I can say though, is that people in Manitoba do live to camp. There are many that lineup on the day MB Parks releases camping spots. There are also a lot of "off the beaten path" spots that you can find if you know where to look. Not sure if you have a camper or RV, but there are some great campsites here that some people use on an almost permanent basis too!

He there, thank you for your content!
Me with my wife are planning to move to Winnipeg as soon as we got our CUAET visas. So if I'm looking for a job - is there any local (Winnipeg) IT community so I can join and present myself and starting to make new friends?

Hi Jennifer, my question is regarding foreign workers, I am from Bulgaria(Europe) and I've wanted to move to Canada for a long time. What are the challenges of finding a job as foreigner ? I've been working as an IT technician, consultant, support engineer for the last 6 years, however I don't have a diploma or college degree relevant to my experience. Is it going to be hard to find a job in this field or it depends on the company profile etc. Thanks

It is absolutely not difficult to find a job. Many employers are short staffed right now! I would do a quick peruse through Indeed.com and you will likely see ample options.
