Pokémon Yellow was definitely a trend starter, being the first mid generation release. I had Blue version back in the day and hadn't played Yellow until the 3DS so I'm curious to know what everyone's memories of the game are!

My ultimate goal (which I had in bank and lost) is a complete living dex. So it’s gonna take a while, lol

Fair haha I would also like a living dex but I've never even managed a complete pokedex yet on any game. Some day though I'm going to make it happen!

Actually, you are wrong. What started the trend was actually Pokemon Blue (JP).
And then, Pokemon Pokemon Red & Blue (In.) was basically a recreated game based on the Japanese Blue....
So Yellow was the 4th in line as a special spin-off... so kinda closer to Legends Arceus

Yellow reverted some things back to how they were in the original Japanese red and green. But every texture is different

0:55 🤓 actually, blue is a mid-gen releases too. Because red and green was the original duo released in Japan

Very true! I should have been a bit more specific in the video. Red and Blue outside of Japan both use the Japanese Blue version as a base since it had better graphics and contained bug fixes (surprisingly since our games were still super buggy). They basically just gave us japanese blue and tweaked it so each of our versions had the exclusive Pokemon of Japanese Red and Green.

Pokemon yellow was great at the time because it really helped me catch all 150 pokemon. I did get all three versions eventually, but I started with red and that's the cart I completed the pokedex on.
Great video by the way. Keep it up!

Thanks for the kind words Ruckus! Somehow I have never managed to complete a pokedex on any game so kudos to achieving it!

i still regret trading my lv88 pikachu for a lv60 raichu, even more so knowing they buffed Red's pikachu to lv88 (i like to think its a reference to myself).
idky but i always thought i was locked into using pikachu back in the day.

I'm glad you noticed :) I started running out of chip names though so had to start resorting to "snack" names haha hence Soda Pop and Zingers

I remember playing Yellow back in middle school "given to that i started with Gold & Crystal as a kid" and to be honest it was cool though there wasn't that much of a difference between Red & Blue aside from the exclusive Pokémon.
But i like the fact that it mirrors the anime in some ways and the sprites from Yellow looks quite nice "Except for Nidoking i still prefer his Red & Blue sprite over the one it got in Yellow"
The surfing Pikachu was also a cool thing and that the game also added a way for you to interact with him just like Ash although most of the time i ended up boxing the little thing and go for something better "let's be honest Pikachu's defenses are as weak and frail as a supermarket shopping bag" but it was a fun experience notheless. Still wish we had one more battle with Jesse & James at the Giovanni's Gym right before battling him instead of just ending it up in Silph Co.

Hey Pablo! I agree Nidoking was better looking in Red & Blue. Another match with Jesse and James at the gym would have definitely made the anime inspiration stronger too. Thanks for watching and commenting I always like hearing your opinions on things :)

Great video! I'm currently playing through Yellow trying to get a full living dex in it by catching everything possible in Yellow and only trading over the few Pokémon not present in Yellow. This means I've got to play through (much of) Yellow 3 times and transfer over a handful of Pokémon each time before I have to restart and do it again.
I have one comment about how to take care of Brock without Mankey or Butterfree. In all my playthroughs of Yellow so far I've caught a Nidoran♂ and leveled it to 12 so it learns Double Kick which has been perfect for taking out Brock's Pokémon.

Also in answer to your other question: I also had Blue back in the day and played 10 minutes of a friend's copy of Yellow. Seeing that it was an (almost) identical copy of Blue set me on a path to thinking all new Pokémon games had the same story and events but with new Pokémon. This didn't interest me so I stopped buying the games. It wasn't until Gen 4 (far too late) that I realized my mistake.

Thanks for watching! Good luck with the living dex I've always wanted to do this too for gen 2 on crystal and gen 3 on emerald maybe someday I'll give it a serious attempt. Also good suggestion with Nidoran and double kick 👌

wtf? I had no idea about the cup multiplayer battles you could do in yellow. I traded to myself as a kid but to my Blue cartridge. I only had one yellow cartridge so didn’t know this was a thing. I might have traded to friends with another yellow cartridge but never noticed that option.

    • @boxheadbaron4655

I had no idea either! A very random and not well promoted addition, unique to Yellow

  • @PhilipMurphyExtra

This was the Pokemon Yellow version that you need another game just to access a surfing minigame, That is probably not a good game design really

    • @Chris-bz2rf
      @Chris-bz2rf 9 місяців тому +1

I mean at least the virtual console version lets you have the mini game without stadium, plus you're probably not gonna connect it to play the mini game, you're probably just wanted to play the game on a screen where you can actually see

    • @TheDeathmail
      @TheDeathmail 6 місяців тому +1

It's meant to be a special bonus.... so saying it's not good design feels dumb.
It wasn't supposed to be a part of the game, but a special gift for buying Stadium....

I played Pokemon Yellow when I was a kid. I caught every single obtainable Pokemon in Yellow including Mew. Unfortunately, due to the lack of link cable and people to trade with, I couldnt complete them all.
I had a neighbor who was playing Red and I asked him what does he want for trade if I wanted his version exclusives. He wanted my Blastoise. "Cant you ask for something that can be caught in the wild? Thats an unfair trade! I can only have one Blastoise!" He still wanted my Blastoise. I didnt buy a link cable. 😐
Looking back, even if I did trade with him, Blue exclusives are still out of reach.
Years late, Yellow got re-released in the 3DS VC. I couldve saved money buy simply buying Red and Blue (I have two 3ds) but since my childhood was yellow, I had to complete Yellow.
I eventually completed all 151 Pokemon in Yellow with a team loosely resembling Ash and a trainer named Ash.
    Pikachu
The Kanto starters but evolved because I needed their Pokedex entry
Pidgeot, because it is a major part of Ash's OG 6.
And Lapras because in the anime, Ash surfed on Lapras more so than any Pokemon in the entire series.
Also I had Red and Blue in my extra 3DS so I took the opportunity to get all 251 Pokemon in my Gold as well. Including Celebi which I got through coin case gltich.
I wouldve prefered to complete Crystal instead but if you remember, Crystal VC didnt release until later. GS VC released first and I was not willing to wait.

Catch a nidoran and train it to level 12 and it Learns low kick or something and you can use that to defeat Brock

Good point and also a good strategy, they both learn Double Kick pretty early in Yellow
