Watched another video on this motor vs A major brand. It was faster but turned out to be the prop performance. He put the 3 blade Newport on the m-kota and it was a whole new beast. Good video straight to the point. Thank you

I put the NV 46 lb on my NuCanoe F12. It was used hard - but not abused - fishing in fresh water exclusively. It died yesterday, exactly one month out of warranty, and I had to paddle a mile. Upon disassembly I found the motor/commutator filled with water, and extremely corroded, so it had been leaking for some time. I will try to rebuild it (if I can get parts), and plan to use extra sealant when re-assembling. Doubt I'll buy another one. Waiting for a reply from NV support.

I've been using this motor for about 6 months now on my Frontier 12 and its been awesome. It does struggle a bit against a decent current, but overall I'm very pleased. The lower in the water the better it seems to operate.

UPDATE3: A month later, the company still refuses to respond. I filed a claim through BB and this is the response I received from BBB: "Regretfully we must inform you that our numerous correspondences made on your behalf to Newport Vessels have gone unanswered and we have closed your complaint as No Response.". If you buy anything from them, just know what you are signing up for.
UPDATE 2: I filled a warranty claim and the company is not responding on any channel: live chat, email, or phone.
First UPDATE: still one star, but I could go for 0. I went fishing for the first time. Freshwater. Motor started acting up after 2 hrs. It was full of water. The seal between the magnet housing and the brushes housing was faulty. Customer service couldn't find the part. That seal actually does not exist on the diagram! I found it randomly by googling it, because you can't find it by motor type on their website, as weird as it sounds. I ordered the part, paid $30 for 2 day shipping, it arrived in 3 days, I asked for the difference in shipping because it didn't arrive on time, and since then the company refuses to respond to me.
Guys, trust me on this: don't do business with this company. You may be lucky, or you may regret it like me.
      Original review:
Got this to replace a 40lb Minn Kota. I have another Newport 62lb that behaves well so far in saltwater. So I decided to get another one, 55lb, for use in fresh water.
      - Out of the box the reverse is making rattling noises like the wheel of fortune. Sounded like something loose, maybe a screw of the plate or a brush. Anyway, too risky to go out with it like this. Could have been armature rubbing on a wire and then you get smoke.
      - Sent a video to Customer Service, and the dialogue that followed was ridiculous.
      - First, they said it's normal. Nope. It's definitely not. After using, fixing, and servicing trolling motors for 20 years, I can say it's definitely not normal.
      - Then they said I shouldn't hear it when in water. Well, I'm not interested in hiding a problem, I'm more interested of not getting stranded 5 miles from the ramp. Not to mention the stealth part being gone for fishing.
      - Than he said he conferred with a colleague and the colleague said I shouldn't worry about it. Wow. That's definitely another level. What was offensive was how dismissive they were with this response.
      - Finally, they said they can't do anything unless I test it in water. My next fishing vacation is in about a month. And that's out of Amazon return window.
      - Anyway, I decided to open the motor and check. Indeed, one of the brushes was chewed unevenly. And that's on a motor that ran a total of 4 minutes in it's life. See pic. The problem is the manufacturing quality of the armature and lack of Quality Control. The posts of the armature are not sloped as they should and are unequal in height, and they hit the top of the brushes.
      - Definitely Minn Kota from now on. I never learn that saving $50 may result in a lot more trouble.

Speed is mostly the same with twelve volt trolling motors, between three to four mph. Its the thrust that only changes. trolling motor is not about speed, but thrust. Outboards motors are about horsepower, thrust,, and speed. I sold my NV-55 thrust trolling motor. I bought an Epropulsion Spirit-one-plus...And I like it.....I can go 6.5 mph with a lot of gear and a extra person.

I got a Nucanoe Frontier 12, just like this one in the video. I have a 55 lb thrust trolling motor just like this one and it is a pain in the ass to operate it as the seat is always in the way. I also have the extension handle and it does not help much. I'm thinking about buying another motor with a longer shaft. That way, I can stand up and operate/control the motor much better.

Looking good man! I'm looking to get into adding a motor (probably start with trolling) to a kayak for the first time. Wife and I generally paddle in the Crescent Crew kayak so it looks like the 55lb is the one for that size. I've been looking between Minn Kota and Newport as the two options. For 55lb, how long are running times looking for you at average speeds? Mainly looking it as an option to help us get back on long and/or windy days. If it has enough juice to get us out there for a few hours of fishing too...I won't complain!

@@5050fishing they have great customer support. I'm picking up the NV 55# Kayak version. So the main component so getting speed is the RPM of the prop. As you hit 45#, 55# etc, the rpms slightly go up, but not by much. This is why in general people will say a 30# is the same as a 45#... yes and know. The rpms change a lot more when you get to the 62 to 86# range, but unless the plan is going to Santa Catalina, what is the point?
