- In this video, we'll explore the novel, one of the most popular and versatile literary genres in English literature. We'll discuss what makes a novel a novel, and how it differs from other forms of fiction such as short stories, epics or dramas.
We'll also delve into the different types of novels that exist in English literature. For example, we'll look at the picaresque novel, which features a rogue or antihero protagonist who navigates a corrupt society, as seen in works like Henry Fielding's "Tom Jones."
Example of Picaresque Novel:
1. Tom Jones by Henry Fielding
2. Don Quiote by Miguel de cervantes
We'll also explore the Gothic novel, a type of novel that emerged in the late 18th century and features supernatural or mysterious elements, such as ghosts, haunted castles, and dark secrets. Examples of Gothic novels include Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte.
Other types of novels we'll discuss include the epistolary novel, which is composed entirely of letters between characters, as seen in Samuel Richardson's "Pamela"; the bildungsroman, which follows the development of a young protagonist from adolescence to adulthood, such as in Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations"; and the historical novel, which recreates past events such as A Tale of two cities by Dickens.
Romance Novels involve romantic relationship between characters with happy resolution. Jane Austen’s Novel Pride and Prejudice is the best example of Romantic or Domestic Novels.

3. Pride and Prejudice
Historical fiction tells the story of Historical Person, or Historical event. E.g. A Tale of two cities written by Charles Dickens is the best example of Historical novels.
Science fiction and Fantasy novels involve an imaginary world of technology or magic. George Orwell dystopian Novel 1984 is the example of Science fiction. Lord of the Rings series is also example of Science fiction.
