The River Surfers of Munich

- In Munich’s English Garden, at the Eisbach, exists a lively river surfing culture. Munich is hundreds of kilometers away from the nearest ocean, yet is famous for its accomplished river surfers. This footage was taken in March 2019, at a time when the Eisbach river is still very cold indeed, fed by melt water coming down from the mountains. Some of the Eisbach surfers have gone on to sponsorship, and international acclaim.

It’s the sound of the water. People stand and watch for ages, soothed by the sound of the rushing water and the weirdness of surfing while cars drive by.

All that fresh water from the mountains is intense and beautiful! I've been surfing and it's not easy on the beach let alone in that raging water! They are experts indeed.
They make it look quite effortless, but I suspect it’s really physically demanding. In that case, they’re probably not cold at all in that icy meltwater.

Once again Verena, you have stunned and impressed me with another extraordinary example of human ingenuity; insanity; and inventiveness! I was transfixed by the marvelous showcase of skill, playfulness, and pure spectacle of an event, such as this! WOW! I, like the crowd, was glued to watching these athletes; and I probably could have continued to watch this for another 20 minutes! I loved how you showed downstream (for I wondered what happened when they fell, or like a guy further on in the video, jumped into the river! I was relieved to see it was shallow enough to climb out of!). I especially liked the footage from the other bank, towards the end. Not only did it give a fresh perspective; but it clearly shows, as you mentioned, how this is a whole new ballgame, in terms of surfing! I really enjoyed your commentary and documentation of a truly incredible event!
Gounderous, you make me laugh. I agree though about the insanity of river surfing in the Bavarian capital, in 14 C water, but it’s a bit like the London Serpentine swimmers, who swim in the middle of London, in water that is not only freezing in the winter, but also a cloaca of duck and goose sh*t, slimy algae and discarded plastic. If you do survive the experience, the group coffee and cake in the Lido café afterwards are a fabulous bonding experience. Some of those river surfers land sponsorship deals and find themselves in international competitions, so ultimately maybe not so crazy...... 👋🏻

Much as I adore Australia, the wildlife is less friendly than the odd trout that you might encounter here.

Only In Australia I have never seen anybody fish in the park, but interesting question. There may be a different corner in the park where it is allowed. The park is huge, and there is even a corner where nudism is allowed.

This looks so fun I’m from Tampa Florida so almost all of my friends service and are used to this looks so fun it’s just such beautiful scenery I would give anything to go there in and try that that just looks so fun and so beautiful thank you so much for sharing something like this I never even knew this existed what an amazing video
I suspect the water is shockingly cold, but the neoprene will take care of that very quickly. Still, the warm waters of Florida would be preferable to most.

I prefer this. Its smaller space for the surfers but a lot safer that the ocean where you can get shark attacks and stronger waves. It still fascinates me how people stand and keep their balance on surf boards. It's not for me😂😂😂 Really enjoyed this V
It’s certainly very predictable water -the waves don’t vary, the way they would in the ocean. The cold, though!

@@verenatravelssolo2527 :) if I ever visit Munich for sure, but I don't think my wetsuit isn't warm enough! Must be absolutely freezing! When it's that cold you see the people that REALLY love surfing. It's easy when it's nice and warm, but when you enter the water and the cold punches you in the face than it's another story. Full on respect for those guys!
Yes, not fond of the cold. I did my PADI Rescue Diver in Weymouth in Dorset. The cold was awful - like somebody twisting a screwdriver through your forehead into your brain.

I actually figured out how to put writing on the thumbnail, but obviously picked the wrong size, since it got cut off at the bottom. Sigh, it’s an uphill struggle.

Cool surfers they are so brave the surfers where I live be going really far into the water trying to catch the big waves but they don't know how fast the current will take them but this is more safer in this video cuz it's low tie the water is not that high but this is very fun to watch though thx for sharing with us.
