Joe, thanks for the review. You give the best chance of all the reviews to truly hear what these speakers can do. I'm surprised at the low end. The addition of a sub would probably make them even better.
Joe - I put a comment asking about the Edifier 1700s last month and ended up getting them. I think these are some must reviews, I'm absolutely in love with them!
I also got an offer to review the TreVolo 2 speakers and i'm pretty excited. I am researching electrostatic speakers as well and its a cool technology!
If they would build non self powered , non blue tooth book-shelf sized speaker I bet they would sell a ton of them. Just think, an electrostatic speaker about 1.5 ft square. I don't think anyone else does it.
I own an all Martin Logan 7.2 setup the door size you shown were your monster full full range electrostatic MartinLogan did make such a speaker. There more popular models are in the some foot prints of your typical tower speaker 11 in by 58 in tall they of course come bigger I'm right in the middle of compared to their flagship the Neolith if I had 80,000 i'ld buy a pair. Anyway I paid discontinued prices for all of my speakers I took a gamble on a pair of used slim xl's at $738 when they come in at $799 ea. But I was after that sweet ML folded motion tweeter to have in my surround speakers and center channel my system with two Dynamo subs ran about just about $5500 with cables not included are my Sonyx4 receiver 400 disc blu ray 400 CD player PlayStation 3 for 3D Lg HD DVD New Samsungx2 4K player and QLED6. @LD Blake I didn't mean the example of my dad as an extreme. In fact, I would say 90% of people are like him. My system would msrp for around 5k (I didn't pay that much, of course), and he's heard it, and been very impressed by it, but he would never go out and buy something for even $500. It's just not on his radar. I, on the other hand, have a classical and jazz music background. Cheap speakers literally irritate me, like I want to either start EQ'ing them or just turn it off. Another example: I did a four day project to remove resonance and soundproof my car and upgrade the speakers. That project (all DIY, no labor costs, and aggressive deal shopping) was around $800. Most people wouldn't spend that on anything audio. That's just me.
Hi Joe, thank you for high quality contents, this is currently favorite channel on UA-cam, can I ask unrelated question to this video because I don't know where to ask. I have paired my Elac UB5s to Pioneer VSX 932 which is 165 W/ch (6 ohms, 1 kHz, THD 10 %, 1ch Driven) and unfortunately no figures for 4 ohms. Is this Receiver good enough?
I really don't know about that amp. Search around on the internet. Check the budgetaudiophile Reddit. That 10% THD rating seems awfully high to rate an amp. Glad you like the channel. Sorry I don't have more info for your amp question.
@LD Blake Thank you so much for your insight, I don't usually listen to anything too loud as I am a pretty calm person. I can just buy 8 ohm speaker like KEF Q350 for the same price of upgrading the receiver right?
@LD Blake So people in my situation, would it be wiser to spend money on a great 8 ohm speaker and keep the same amp or keep the 4 ohm Elac and spend the same money on upgrading the Amp/Receiver?
Joe N Tell is my only UA-cam channel for audio systems and I like the quality of your content. Though it’s not related to the Benq speaker, I wanted to ask this question here - how do you rate the Logitech Z906 5.1 speaker system? Thanks in advance!
Thanks! I don't know about those specifically, but I have some old Logitech X-230's that are surprisingly decent! They aren't up to par with some of the bookshelf speakers I've reviewed, but for the price, I'm happy with them.
I got the z-2300 and z623 and both sound quite decent for the price! The z623 is a 2.1 version of the z906. Highs are a bit meh but bass and mids are solid!
Thanks Joe, for the quick reply! I have listened to some songs at a friend’s on those speakers. The specs say it’s THX certified. I wanted to check with you. Thanks again!
Thanks Eternal, for the quick reply. I believe the 2.1 version is also THX certified. So I guess, based on your review on the 2.1 version, it may not be the best for the money, for $299 in Amazon.
@@danielbaskaran8924 Yeah the THX certification is not really useful for determining musical qualities. I believe it's mostly mid and peak volume requirements in order to make the set work great in movies. (dialogues, explosions etc.)
The sound is pretty clear with good stereo separation. The bass seems just about adequate for acoustic and classical music and vocals. The only issue I hear is that they are very directional and hence more suitable for desktop type use. I was wondering if a single unit would be good for background music when you have guests over...
Given their small size, I would assume they're quite directional. You're correct with the rest - these are ideal for supreme clarity and really shine with analog content (classical, acoustic, folk, etc) but less so with music that was "designed" (for lack of a better word) for distortion-rich playback like radios and outdoor concerts (rock, metal, rap). And of course, a lot of music straddles both (R.E.M. for example) and so you'd very likely want at least a small, high-quality (tight, not boomy) sub to go with them. But I question whether all this is worth the money given the audio delay mentioned when directly connecting to sources, on the one hand, and the quality limitations of bluetooth on the other. That delay is kind of a killer for audiophiles.
@@joentell Ah, that changes things for sure. Do you notice similar delay with other speakers connected to USB or is it clearly with the BenQ? Still, 3.5mm is an option on nearly all sources.
Gotta set realistic expectations for battery powered Bluetooth speakers. Their price puts them in a tough position though. Definitely a small niche of people these are right for. Probably not the right speakers for a lot of people.
Joe, thanks for the review. You give the best chance of all the reviews to truly hear what these speakers can do. I'm surprised at the low end. The addition of a sub would probably make them even better.

The LPF is on the sub. No high pass built into the speakers though

Those giant electrostatic speakers you briefly showed look crazy. Seems like exotic technology.
Lol. I guess if you are committed and have a dedicated listening area and lots of money. 🤣
Cables...duh!
@LD Blake If you can afford a good pair of electro static speakers, you likely have a dedicated room for audio and home theater.
@LD Blake It's not for everyone. My dad is just fine with an $80 all-in-one stereo with cheapie speakers.
