Here's the thing - you want to go electric but it seems too much of a leap. Perhaps pure-electrics are a little too expensive for a convenient range, or you might be a business user.
This where or plug-in hybrids, or PHEVs, come in as they offer a decent electric range suitable for daily commuting, but once the electric range has been exhausted the petrol engine can be used if you don't want to charge up. They're also great for business users as PHEVs attract low company car tax.
One of the newest to arrive in 2021 is the Audi A3 40 TFSI e. Audi has offered a plug-in hybrid A3 in the past - the A3 e-tron - but this is TFSI e is based on the newest A3 that's packed with Audi's latest technology and sharp-edged styling.
The A3 40 TFSI e shares a lot with its sister cars the Volkswagen Golf GTE and the SEAT Leon e-Hybrid, but in typical Audi style, there's a bit more glitz on offer compared with those models and it arguably has a more upmarket badge.
It uses a 1.4-litre petrol engine, an electric motor and a 13kWh battery giving 201bhp, 31g/km of CO2 and an electric range of around 40 miles.
A more powerful 45 TFSI e will arrive in early 2021 too, but here Nicki Shields takes a look at the 40 TFSI e and gives her verdict.

Work is pushing EV company cars, but not installing chargers at the work place. I live on a street and don't always get parked right outside my house. So was asked to look at Hybrid petrol. Picked the Audi A3 tfsi e. I have a charging point 2 mins from my home. But I must admit I'm a little worried how I am going to keep it charged up to get the best from it.

I purrently have a Meowdi A3 Spurrtback E-tron from 2018 (the purrdecessor of the Meowdi A3 40 TFSI e) with the smallest wheels pawssible and I am very happy with it's electric range already, so I'll keep it fur a few more years until there's a PHEV with nuff range to make it to my mew workplace (which would be about 80 km combined). :) A shy meow and greetings from Switzerland!

The Skoda octavia IV uses the same stuff but is much better built( although I don't like the supposed face level vents in the skoda which actually point at your knees!)
Good review. I have a 2018 version of this car (mine is called an A3 E-Tron). Electric travel is wonderful but in cold weather expect 10-11 miles only on leccie. Hybrid travel is great and I have achieved 52 mpg on a 500+ mile journey in one day. Handling is good and solid, especially on motorways but I would not like to test the chassis by throwing it around on tight bends. Audi's app is probably the worst software I have ever come across - takes ages to load and will only manage a few of the available functions. Charging schedules are subject to failure too, so sometimes you have no charge in a car you thought was charging overnight. As a piece of hardware, I'd give it 8/10+ but overall, no more than 6/10.
@Peter Shorney Thanks for your review!! helpful 🙃 well, I hope the new version sorted out those app problems!! I have a 2015 A3 1.4 CoD and ... yes! that Audi app is pathetic! No way to set a destination from the smartphone and send it to the car!! Enervating! That said, 52 mpg on a 500+ mile journey is GREAT! was it motorway only or mixed (city, country roads, downhill, etc.)? Other question: is the A3 e-tron as heavy as this new model? Thanks for your feedback!! 🙂
@@jamspad2088 500+ miles was mostly motorway and dual carriageway. The A3 e-Tron is heavy, but not sure that the latest model is heavier. On the good side, my around town journeys are all electric these days.
@@petershorney7504 wow!! ... mosty motorway ... so it means little or even no regeneration braking and despite the lack of an 'extra refill' of electrons you managed 52 mpg!! it's excellent! I'm thinking of handing in my current A3 (2015) 1.4 tfsi CoD and take the new PHEV A3 ... and well, I'm desperately trying the get hints and pieces of information (real life use) here and there before going to see my dealership 🤔 ... just a matter of being able to ask the 'right' questions to the dealer 😈 My use of the car (80%) is mostly home-work within a range of 20-30 km/day, and I have the chance to own a private parking equipped with sockets. Wonder how the range changes for a used one considering the small ev range
It’s basically the same engine and range as the previous e-Tron model and I think it’s better quality inside and about £20k cheaper for a good used one.
i agree about inside quality. but when i was browsing auto-trader earlier it said under the specs that the old one "official" range was 22 miles vs 40 miles for the new one. yeah, used cars are always the economic way to go.
Things like rear view cameras etc are optional extras. The Merc A250e is a much better buy.
Thats true but on the another hand distronic is not standard on the Mercedes.
I've driven a Seat Leon and though it was a reasonable car... I am more inclined to choose and Audi over a seat because I think the quality of an Audi is better... .I am also more likely to test drive the Audi A3 40 TFSI than the Seat. especially as I'm no longer keen on the Seat brand.
Prefer this to the Seat. But I’ve never liked Seats.
We never got the 2021 in the USA.
Very nice Audi, but the last jump up in quality costs a lot, so the corresponding SEAT is perhaps a better buy, as Ford says, but he is still not as charming (because you are much prettier than him) ;)
If only she would say what size the engine is from the start in stead of having to listen to all the drivel about squishy detail. What is the actual engine mpg not the stupid claims made by Audi, does the engine have a cam belt how often does it needs to be changed, if only these presenters would tell prospective buyers the important stuff. To many of them think it’s about themselves and not the car.
Has anyone used this car on a motorway? If so how does it perform. I currently have a 30 tfsi and they gets above 60 mpg on most motorways.
Is the engine quite economical? Is it better overall on fuel compared to the 30 tfsi?

As a current A3 owner I really wish Audi offered something fully electric in this size. The lack of physical buttons in the ID.3 and Cupra Born is a bit of a deal-breaker.
Most reviews of the ID3 say the in car tech is woeful. I'd almost wait till an update was released and that looks like a dealer visit as I think over the air update is later ID releases.
Super review N.S. Obviously a quality car with a lot going for it including the 40+ miles on Electric but it strikes me as slightly expensive for its place in the small (ish) saloon car PHEV market

It's range anxiety and charging times that stop people buying EVs, not price
@@nehtals most people take a break every 2-3h of driving. the highway code in most places actually dictates 2h. the middle range model of ID3 can do just that and can recharge to 80% in 35min. which is just enough for a toilet brake, a coffee and a smoke.
@@yvs6663 EVs are mainly good for long distance drivers. Charging points and driving distance of cars needs to improve before we see a big boom

This car can do 182.5mpg according Audi, I presume that's on Hybrid mode up to 37-41 miles (realistically 25-30) of electric? when that dies , it drops back down to a normal petrol driven engine at roughly 40-50 mpg
The Audi A3 and the SEAT Leon both have great exteriors, but inside the Audi trumps the Leon with its much more premium interior, the Leon interior is certainly lacking with much cheaper materials. However I’ve bought the Volkswagen Golf 8 this time around which I’m getting on the 10th February, but I will probably get an Audi A3 next time I buy a car!🤟
The seat dosnt do a plug in hybrid,as I spoke to seat today,and they don't know when they are going to be doing a plug in hybrid.
I prefer the look of the Seat Leon version, more sporty/modern looking.
Been thinking this could be the way forward for next car. Rather the looks of it to the Seat. Currently running a diesel A3 and Golf Gti. Could be tempted to go to one car and run a Phev.

PHEVs are a bad pathway to electric:
1. Still have the same motor, great box etc...in fact more complicated.
2. If you don’t hit the range projections (you wont) this is more serious on economy and you will use the engine a lot more than you thought. Going from 40 miles to 30 might change all commutes into using the ICE.
The best transitional car is a range extender. More range on battery, less complicated than PHEVs, still have a generator to give peace of mind.

The steering wheel is absolutely disgusting and ruins the entire car. Such a nice car ruined by the cheapest 1980s circle steering wheel. Audi couldnt even fit a flat bottom or any sporty wheel. Massive turn off. Will stick to Mercedes and BMW for this exact reason. 40k for a basic a3 with not even a flat bottom is crazy

Ordered one of these cars in January of 2022, and on the 3rd of May 2022 I have been told the delivery date at the earliest will be March of 2023 and subject to being moved even further. So 14 months if it all goes well!! What's happening in the world?

Growing up I always was a fan of Mercedes for quality and comfort and BMW for engines...never cared for Audi that much. Now that I can afford one, I have to say I would have this over an A class or series 1 any time!
I rather enjoy the interior and the exterior... Is nice and not as flashy as the Mercedes. Great balance between being an eye turner and being discrete enough.

Don't get the bigger/smaller wheel thing? I thought the overall size is the same, bigger alloy - lower profile? Otherwise you'd get false speed and mileage (+ illegal?)😕
Bisher Wheels are heavier and harder to start to rotate. This needs more energy.
