wow i still can’t believe that those arial shots aren’t really arial shots and just small sand dunes. It was very creative and done very well. So convincing that I still can watch it knowing that it’s not arial.. but still looks like a massive canyon, and a massive cliff. Just incredible.
Wow Luke! The fact that you are sharing 60 minutes of excellent tutorial FOR FREE is absolutly incridble! Paying for this would be fine since the amount of information and tips shared can be used forever and can inspire many. This is mindblowingly kind of you and your team, thank you!!
I just wanted to give people a look at what they can expect if we decide to do this again. I love sharing but it has to be worth the effort (this was a lot of effort). This was also a paid thing for a very long time. Making it public was overdue.
thank you for sharing... i have not seen a BTS tutorial like this ... very comprehensive - you have motivated me to go out and create... very inspiring.
Very interesting and useful, far too many tutorials get bogged down in irrelevant detail whereas this really just points the way for people to do their own thing and covers so much ground without getting boring.
Outrageously kind of you to post this extended tutorial. It's pretty cool to see how talented you are on such a wide range of programs. Great ideas for working on a low budget. Thanks for inspiration!
One of the most comprehensive tutorial I've seen in a while. So good! The quality of the content is mind blowing. Really inspired me to stop making excuses and be creative with the least amount of gears and assets. Thank you so much!
"No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thinking." (Voltaire). You guys are talent, intelligence, and initiative rolled into one. No problems, only solutions. Nice work.
INCREDIBLE video! Very informative. Please make more of this kind of videos! I love watching behind the scenes / making of videos and learning new techniques and get inside the creative mind of more filmmakers
What an absolutely beautiful tutorial. This was so in depth it felt as if I was in the room with you as this was all coming together! I cannot tell you how beneficial this was to me not only from a technical (almost hands on experience) kind of way... but also from a motivational (I can do this too) kind of way. This was invaluable. Thanks so much, keep up the good work! I've shared this with all of my filmmaking colleagues and friends.
you are one the great indie filmmakers i ever seen. you made a surprisingly perfect film with low budget. thank you for sharing your insights. its so helpful for we as newbie filmmakers.
Great behind the scenes mate. Really enjoyed how to explained the entire create process and your workflow. Would be awesome to watch a follow up episode where you talk about budget, your crew, a bit more on your equipment, etc.
uffff ! this is what im exactly looking for , after browsing thru tons of youtube videos for months, I landed up here ! I can't thank you enough , I would love to join any of your paid course.
it was so cool to see your workflow. the many positions you undertake in your productions is impressive. I love the fact that you prove it doesn't take a full production team to create inspiring imagery. Thank you for your hard work and sharing.!
What I say - I want this wonderful world to continue to improve throughout the end of time. What my alter ego secretly desires - for reality to suddenly change into some sort of science fiction. What I believe - Something world changing has yet to come. (this damn video has been in my recommendations for too long.)
I am lost for words on this. You have produced a GREAT BTS here. And to top it off, you seem really humble about it. There are not a lot of people who like to let their creative process out of the bag, and I commend you on this. I look forward to actually watching the Beacon now...lol. Thanks again...
Very cool behind-the-scenes. That's some seat of the pants grading, without scopes or anything. I guess no Lumetri tools in AE at the time? Your grade for the scene you featured looks a bit like old Technicolor 3 strip, I dig it. Your work over-all is awesome. That look of the "non cliffs" is epic.
Groovy as hell. I'm way too new to understand many of the tools, but I still learned a lot. I'm sure I'll come back for more once i'm more familiar with After Effects. Thank you for your time, and your art, and I hope we get to see the remaining episodes eventually
Thank you so much for sharing all of this, I know how timeconsuming a project like this is and to also do such a comprehensive BTS along with it.. Kudos man. Thank you. Can't wait to see more episodes!
Lots of great info in this! I loved how you were hesitant about the VFX but took the plunge anyway. That salt flat is amazing! I'd love to check it one day when I ever get down to Oregon.
Thanks for sharing this very good film making tutorial, this is a source of inspiration!! I enjoyed watching it and will be watching it to soak in all the valuable information.
You guys are amazing! But i don't know why when i watched this the colors and the actors, the sounds(kinda) :D etc.. reminds me of a horror movie i don't know why :D Nice video ,nice film everything is just looking stunning.
enjoyed this immensely. When you do the spaceship flyby I was intrigued that you did not use a v large sphere to map the star field and then have the spaceship and camera inside the sphere.
Whoa!!! on that simulation scene. Duplicating yourself like that is mind blowing. I was wondering how much you had to pay for all the other actors. WOW! spectacular work
Thanks for the great BTS of your Sci-Fi film. I love that you filmed at Ft Stevens and Battery Russell (in Hammond Or.). My family and I have visited those areas a few time and I always wanted to film there, maybe some day :D
I really like this tutorial. The end result is amazing and there are lots of nice tricks in there that help you getting along with a limited budget. However, it felt kinda weird to me that you chose to build a real set for the spaceship corridor. Seems to be a huge waste of budget and resources. You could have modelled something like that (with even more interesting details) in Blender in like 2 hours and just composited some greenscreen footage of the guy into the scene. Feels kinda overkill for such a short and dark shot. But other than that incredible work :-)
I mean, yeah for sure! In hindsight absolutely. We kind of just wanted to do it. Didn’t go as planned but that’s what happens on productions sometimes. I also had people do interiors digitally and I just wasn’t happy with the results.
wow i still can’t believe that those arial shots aren’t really arial shots and just small sand dunes. It was very creative and done very well. So convincing that I still can watch it knowing that it’s not arial.. but still looks like a massive canyon, and a massive cliff. Just incredible.
Only few will know this video's worth but who does he/she knows it's a pure gold mine

this makes me feel like I can actually achieve all of the things I convinced myself I couldn't do. Thank you.
thank you for sharing... i have not seen a BTS tutorial like this ... very comprehensive - you have motivated me to go out and create... very inspiring.
Thank you, this is kind of our blue print going forward.
This channel is so stupidly underrated. Also, why aren't these guys producing high level content for studios?
Thank you, we do produce some stuff for other people quite a bit :)
Wow this was unexpectedly long episode. But so good
those shots of the alien landscape using just sand was genius.
Very interesting and useful, far too many tutorials get bogged down in irrelevant detail whereas this really just points the way for people to do their own thing and covers so much ground without getting boring.
This is absolutely one of my favorite things on UA-cam.
Outrageously kind of you to post this extended tutorial. It's pretty cool to see how talented you are on such a wide range of programs. Great ideas for working on a low budget. Thanks for inspiration!

HEY. Oregonian here, always good to see my homestate represented in art. well done.
wow! that's awesome, clearly a proof of the new era of filmmaking! one person can make it all.
and the music is astonishing!
"No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thinking." (Voltaire). You guys are talent, intelligence, and initiative rolled into one. No problems, only solutions. Nice work.
John Deggendorf Thank you John!
It's the best approach to sci-fi film making.
This is more a sort of "making of" than a turorial. But very interesting, thanks.
WOW. Just WOW! I'm a total beginner at this filmmaking thing. I've created a few shorts, but i've definitely learned a lot here. This was amazing!
you such a all-rounded genius
Those wide aerials were amazing. Well done on the whole production.
Thank you :)
Thanks for sharing! You made amazing looking shots with great taste. There's no plugin for that!
Thanks man.

This is super inspirational! A good reminder that anything can be done with the right mindset
Thank you for this. Really helpful. I’m trying to make something definitely more campy and analogue but this will come in handy thanks a lot

Shane Rushby Thanks for the kind words.
My pleasure
Wow, the aerial desert shot was done like that? Cool.

Chosen Idea Yeah, this was 2014 ish so not a lot of that in Adobe yet.
Thank you for your work and sharing them!!
please make more long videos like this. really enjoyed it.
Groovy as hell. I'm way too new to understand many of the tools, but I still learned a lot. I'm sure I'll come back for more once i'm more familiar with After Effects. Thank you for your time, and your art, and I hope we get to see the remaining episodes eventually
Absolutely amazing! It's really awesome and creative the way you used the sand to create the aerial shots.
Dear god this video is amazing. Such a great view into the entire process.
Dude thanks for this!!!! You're great
Plssssss do more of the "how we to make a sci-fi look " type of vids
There's one coming out this Thursday for a comedy/adventure project
I'm really lucky to have stumbled upon this, truly brilliant insight. Thank you.
I bought this a while ago, it's awesome to watch it again. I will pay for it if you do it again, definitely.
Thank you sir.
Thank you so much for sharing all of this, I know how timeconsuming a project like this is and to also do such a comprehensive BTS along with it.. Kudos man. Thank you. Can't wait to see more episodes!
Thank you, it's awesome to have Marika documenting all of it like this.
Aye, having someone dedicated to it is a blessing. Let her know how appreciated she is! :)
This is just awe inspiring! Thank you for sharing this wealth of knowledge.
This is incredible, this channel is filmmaking gold. Why don't you have at least 1M subs???
great behind the scenes film. Star map at 41:22 could be applied to a cylinder so that there would be no seams
Lots of great info in this! I loved how you were hesitant about the VFX but took the plunge anyway. That salt flat is amazing! I'd love to check it one day when I ever get down to Oregon.
Awesome video! Simple and effective advice for my upcoming sci-fi project!

Thanks for sharing this very good film making tutorial, this is a source of inspiration!! I enjoyed watching it and will be watching it to soak in all the valuable information.
I enjoyed this I have no plans wanting to make a Sci-Fi film (who knows it might change) but seeing some of your techniques inspires me a lot. :)
Amazing video! Thank you!
You guys are amazing! But i don't know why when i watched this the colors and the actors, the sounds(kinda) :D etc.. reminds me of a horror movie i don't know why :D Nice video ,nice film everything is just looking stunning.
This video should have a lot more views! A very interesting video. Great job.
Scott Waldron I don't think narrative stuff like this is super popular in UA-cam right now. Maybe it will make a comeback
Brilliant. Love this. Going to watch this again to absorb some of this awesome tutorials. I hope you don't mind if I add this to my playlist.
This is such a wealth of information. Thanks!

This is awesome! I learned so much. Thank you taking the time to do this
Cool! We should do a film based on my legendary Eve Online character 😊

thanks for sharing it, im suscribing right now! amazing content
Outstanding. Thanks!
Very nice! I watched the entire thing. Thanks.
Amazing work you guys 😁
Really enjoyed it! Thanks for sharing.
giggling at 11 minutes in, when everyone runs up to check out the shot XD "let me seeee!" haha
This is great!
7 minutes in and im talking to myself like, "NICE! WOW THATS A REALLY NICE SHOT RIGHT THERE. WOW, COOL!" lmao
Wow you guys know what you are doing. I love it. We are going to a 48 hour film project. Can you tell me what aspect ratio we should shoot in?
