  • “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters-yes, even their own life-such a person cannot be my disciple. And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple." Luke 14:26-27

    Gary Wilkerson and Joshua West discuss the parables of the hidden treasure and the pearl of great price. These parables emphasize the surpassing value of Jesus Christ and the necessity of prioritizing him above all else in life. Gary and Joshua draw parallels with biblical figures like the rich young ruler, Zacchaeus, and the Apostle Paul, highlighting the transformative power of encountering Christ and the importance of surrendering everything to follow Him. The discussion also touches on the urgency of the gospel message, the balance between God's kindness and severity, and the call to be salt and light in the world, sharing the treasure of Christ with others.

    Amen. And that is so true. If we only give up on the small things and not on the bigger things that we think really matter to us on this Earth, like you just said, our children our wives our houses ECT... anything that we consider our top priorities to maintain, then we're not giving up anything. If Christ died for us and shed his blood that we might be saved and born again promise nothing can compare to what he gave up, his life. And like you just said we don't have to think these things aren't important because they are and their gifts from God but we have to love God more than what he gave us because he gave us so much more. Eternal life. John 3:16 a perfect example.

    I was saved, a Bible scholar, totally sold out for Jesus. And my trauma of family brokenness caused me to miscalibrate my affection for my children who I definitely put before God- always with the best intentions. God will recalibrate you if you go off course. And it can be very painful. Course correct now Family! ❤

    Hate was the equivalent for “not selected”. How they used the word hate in biblical times is not the same way we use the word today. Joseph I loved (selected) and Esau I hated (did not select) for example

      Thank you for sharing, I didn’t know that. So I’ll have to check that out. Keep in mind the word hate in Hebrew is different than the word hate in the Greek. The word “hate” used in Luke 14:26 is miseó, which means to “love less”. So to your point the word hate can definitely be used differently in modern times.

    • @ShepherdMinistry
      @ShepherdMinistry День тому

      If it were simply only a selection, then that means you would have to change the word love as well. “Jacob I loved” is due to God’s choice and special love He had for Jacob.

      @@West336 my man, did you just say the word ‘hate’ is different in Hebrew and Greek? Well, yeah. They are two different languages. Now if you were trying to make some larger point about how the Septuagint renders the word or something…go ahead.
      And the whole, hate simply means ‘love less’ than - man you’d make a mess of the word of God if you read that into other passages using the word hate.
      Hebrews 1:9
      [9] You have loved righteousness and (hated) ‘loved’ wickedness ‘less’;
      therefore God, your God, has anointed you
      with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.”
      I think OP is closer to the issue. We definitely get in to problems with modern western ways of views love/hate, especially when we view them as opposite sides of the same coin. We are commanded to love. Modern westerns think - ok that means no hate. Wrong. We are also commanded to hate. We are to love and hate. Stupid unbiblical platitudes only compound the issue. ‘God hates the sin but loves the sinner.’

      @@Postmillhighlights idk if you read the initial comment. He’s using the Hebrew word for hate to explain the meaning for hate in Luke 14:26.
      Also I don’t know why you’d assume I would use the same meaning for hate throughout scripture. The word hate has different meanings in scripture just like the word love does. You should prob look it up because the word hate in Hebrew 1:9 has a different meaning than in Luke 14:26.

    I am currently going through a very serious matter involving one of my children and I have had to take a stand against them because of the wickedness of what they have done. It breaks my heart because I love them, but at the same time I cannot, nor will I show them honor. Yet, there is a family member who likes to come along side of them and say another words "I'll show you honor! I love you!" because they have wicked motives in doing so. Because of that my adult child could be encouraged in the horrible sin they have committed. I pray God will stop the way against this from happening. Please help me pray. I want my adult child to know the exceeding wickedness of what they have done, and turn from it..... However, in prayer I received a Word from the Lord. Psalm 15:4 "In whose eyes a vile person is contemned, but he honors those who fear the Lord." Although I faced persecution from the wicked, I have obeyed the Lord and He has blessed me sooo much with His presence! There's nothing like His presence. I praise Him!

      Yes, we definitely understand how it can sound confusing! Though, Luke 14:26 is where Jesus specifically speaks about this topic. In the podcast, Pastor Joshua is explaining what he believes the meaning of this call truly is. In his view, our love for Jesus should be so strong that our love for other things would seem like hate. Would love to hear your thoughts too!

    Hate? Absolutely did not say that. He said love your neighbor as yourself and love your enemies. He did also say that he came not to bring peace but a sword which divides households. But definitely did NOT say hate anyone. He defined hate as murder in the sermon on the mount.
