    How many movie quotes did you catch?
    Also, one Correction: The regular small seconds' quartz Boulton comes in a couple different sizes, one of which is closer to this one. Yet it still shares the same specs, which are different than this Indiana version.

    I actually like the crocodile style strap, and I think it's more period correct for an art deco style dress watch. I just got mine, and yes, the stap is stiff. However, it will break in after some use. My biggest negative is the crystal not being sapphire. I also wish the case was slightly larger for modernization. You are absolutely right about the case back.

  • @AndreasDingstad
    @AndreasDingstad Рік тому +6

    Thanks for showing us this. I think it's a gorgeous watch. For 800$ though we should be getting a sapphire crystal. I quite like a quartz small seconds hand, however I wish the hand was a little longer. Would be interested if priced in the 3-400$ range.

    My wife gave me this as a fathers day gift. I was happy to go see the movie wearing this beauty. Yes, for a quartz, it seems a bit expensive, but the fun wearing it, out weighs any negatives for me. You are right, it is one of the most comfortable watches that I own, and surprisingly looks really good on my 7 inch wrist. I prefer the croc strap that it comes on, versus the strap you put on it. In the movie, Indy says that his father gave him the watch and I feel the croc strap is something that indys father would have worn. To me, I didnt read to much into the piece, it is just a fun, retro, different looking, conversation piece, that I think any indy fan (like myself), would find it a joy to wear. If someone is on the fence, or an indy fan, as long as you know what you are purchasing...I would say buy it. Have fun with it, enjoy it for what it is. To me, it is watches like this that make watch collecting fun.

    Shane, I have an explanation for this release. The fact is this same watch was available 15 or 20 years ago. Im guessing it wasn't popular and they had all these cases and dials stowed away somewhere and the marketing decision to make it the INDY solves the issue of "How do I get rid of this old inventory?"
    The only thing different on my INDY from way back then is the crown and a different way of presenting the info on the caseback.

    All right. I admit it. I bought it.
    I bought it because the dealer was having a New Year’s sale, and I did pay the equivalent of $600US. Still overpriced? I won’t argue that. However:
    - I find this a lot more comfortable than the Seiko SUP880, which has better specs as a Cartier homage and costs what most people think this should be selling for.
    - Yes, you’re right in saying the strap isn’t “Indy.” but it *is* Henry Jones Sr., the plot says it originally belonged to him. Me, I don’t mind the crocodile look. it works well with a grey suit jacket and the gold color of the watch.
    - Yes, I prefer that a watch have lume for low-light conditions, which is why I think Seiko’s DressKX would make better sense for the money. But I also think this watch works better for business casual dress due to its size and retro dial.
    In short, while it’s overpriced, it’s not a complete waste of money. Not in the way that, say, a Swatch Sistem51 would be.

    I was eyeing this watch long before the movie but held back for exactly the reasons you raised.

    Shane, big Indiana fan here. I thought the Dial of Destiny was so bad a Moonswatch, never mind this Hamilton would be better. I laughed when you said the strap isn't Indiana Jones. The Dial of Destiny isn't Indiana Jones either! The first 20 minutes were good with the fake young Indiana, but once that insufferable woman appeared it was hard to stay through 2 hours of her. There's a reason that movie flopped! Crystal Skull at least didn't end the franchise as the worst I J movie. Why am I doing a movie review? Lol. As for the watch, I like the look but $800 for a tick per second quartz? No. Very entertaining as always Shane. I enjoyed this video an awful lot more than The Dial of Disaster! 😂

      I was just happy they didn't give it the full star wars treatment. I thought for sure it was going to end with him sacraficing himself for whatever her name was. Then she would of been so moved that she would of become a professor and started calling herself Indy... only to be continued as a streaming show on Disney +. That and there was no Shia LaBeouf swinging through the trees like Tarzan with CGI Monkeys.
      Like I said I had some low expectations. I actually walked out of the theater thinking it reminded me more of the old "Young Indiana Jones" Tv show then one of the movies.

    My father had a gold Hamilton tank Style watch back in the early 50s. I don't think it had a second hand. They came on an expandable metal bracelet. I remember the bracelet because he went to throw something and it flew off his hand. When he died he left it to me. It was for many years my prized possession. Sadly a kid broke into my apartment and stole it. And now I cannot afford to replace it. They caught the kid but he never admitted what they did with it. And so I never got it back. It was pretty much the only thing he ever left me.

    Great review! But there is actually a regular roman numeral Boulton that is larger than the one you mentioned, the H13421611. So it's closer to the Indy size with sapphire crystal, 50m water resistance, and screw down caseback, for less than the Indy model. I picked up that version last year and it's an amazing tank alternative. I was excited about the Indy release until i saw those specs. What a disappointment.

    Thanks Shane for this review as I used to be over the fence for buying it. This watch has been on my radar long before it was featured in Idiana Jones latest film. As I am not an Indiana Jones fan, I wont care about it but after this happened, the price went up even in Jomashop (went from $400 to $600) and it is even out of stock. This is a watch that is hardly worth the price even before it spikes up and now it is insane to purchase a quartz, mineral crystal, snaped case back with only 3 atm water resistance, which is a nicer way of saying it is not water resistant, for $600 from Jomashop and yet it is out of stock which means Hamilton similar to the other watch brands we loved such as Seiko decide to live on the hype they make instead of making good watches these days.

    In my humble opinion, your choice of strap is too casual for the design of the watch. I'd keep it on the original, or upgrade to real croc or cayman. I love the art deco, curved case design.

    I've had my eye on this one for a while (it's been around for several years, long before the film) as I love the '40s style, and don't mind a quartz reproduction for daily wear - but concluded that it was simply too expensive. For that kind of money you might as well bite the bullet and seek out a real vintage watch instead.

    Screws have problem of their own, sometimes they get stucked and without proper gear or expertise, they could get loose thread and impossible to remove without boring through the screws.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  Рік тому

      This is true. Some of the best advice I've heard when dealing with tiny screws is to rotate it backwards first, until you feel it pop in place. At that point the threads are lined up, and you can screw it in.

    It seems like they cheaped out at every turn. If you're releasing a watch tied to vintage movie/character, drop a hand-wound mechanical in there, especially at that price.. The numerals are great (I have my grandfather's 1938 Hamilton and they're similar to the arabica on that one) but raised instead of applied also feels too cheap for a watch that costs this much. The snap-on caseback I'm ok with because it's more vintage, just as I'd like it to have an acrylic crystal for that same reason. If this were $100, it'd be fine. But it ain't, and nothing about it, aside from the royalty they have to pay for the Indy branding, makes it look like it should cost more than that.

    • @RelativeTime

    What would your choice for Indy be (modern or vintage)?

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  Рік тому +1

      Well for vintage, I'd think he would have a classic Hamilton field watch. Something simple and not flashy. A modern Indy would probably have something like a G-shock. Sqare or maybe CasiOak. Possibly one of the simpler Garmins. Nothing too expensive, but simple, durable, and reliable.
      I don't know if you have heard of Josh Gates. He's got a few Tv shows on Discovery, some of them are silly at times, but he is an archeologist and runs around the world for the show. He's also a big indy fan and I've noticed that he frequently wears a Breitling Emergency. So that might be another more expensive modern option.

    I used to like vintage Hamilton designs, even owned a solid gold square for a number of years. But it was too small, and it was a money pit as I had it repaired 3 times over the years, which taught me a lesson. Don't plan on actually wearing any watch from the 20s. Like any machine from that era, the parts are just too delicate to actually wear more then every now and again, and even there, no guarantees.
    So that said, the Boulton is one of those great hamilton designs from the vintage era when Hamilton still made its own movements in Lancaster, rather than just a brand that imported generic Swiss movements and recased them, or was just another Swatch group brand..
    So if the Boulton weren't the size of a women's watch, and it was reliable, I might be a customer. With these specs, I might be a customer at $150, $200 at most. No way am I paying $700 for a basic quarrtz watch.

    • @RelativeTime

      I wonder if this release will cause people to buy the older mechanical vintage Boultons? Once they realize it's less than half the price of the new quartz version.

    • @martintanz9098
      @martintanz9098 Рік тому

      @@RelativeTime the original Boulton was released in the 40s, so at this juncture, is 80 years old, or more.. Even a pristine one might need at minimum a service, more likely a repair, and those watches were likely not even splash proof. This is what I went through with my square over 20 years. I just couldn't stay on top of things. After I had the watch serviced, I wound it every couple of months just to make sure it was still running. Only wore it 3 or 4 times. And then for some reason, it just stopped running, again.

    Talk about a missed opporftunity: Give it a sapphire crystal. screwed caseback, decent water resistance, and a mechanical movement, and it's a high-quality dress watch that they could easily sell for $1200-$1400. I think the marketing department was in charge of this thing, which is why we get this lame "Indiana Jones tie-in" for the "Murph market segment".
