Sims 1
With The Sims: Hot Date, restaurants were introduced and the ability for Sims to dine out alone or with someone. In Downtown, there are plenty of cheap & expensive restaurants to choose from. At the restaurant podium you can order one, two or three course meal. If its an expensive restaurant, the maître d' will grab some menus and bring you to your seat. You'll be charged immediately. After a while a waiter will come to take your order and the menus. He will then take your order to the chef. The first course is a salad. The second meal is a typical steak & beans. Ministrel Carlo is an NPC you'll see entertaining the guests in restaurants. You can request a song from him and give him a tip. He'll come to your table and start playing his guitar. The last meal for is a dessert. That is also pre prepared. After they eat the dessert, the dining is over.
Sims 2
In The Sims 2, restaurants were reintroduced with The Sims 2: Nightlife. Every restaurant has a host, that greets the guests. Now Sims can Dine Out again. At first you need to ask to be seated. The host of the restaurant will guide you to your table. After Sims are seated, they will autonomously read the menu and drink water. You can order the same meal for everyone, the chef's choice will order what every Sim has in mind, or you can order individually for every Sim. The waiter will then write your order in a notepad, and go to the kitchen to take the order to the chef. the Chef is always busy cooking meals in the kitchen. After the food is ready the waiter will take the covered platter and bring it to your table, uncovering the meals you ordered. Sims will talk autonomously while eating.
When you're finished, you can pay the bill, or try to skip out on the bill.
Sims 3
In The Sims 3, Sims can dine out at a restaurant. But Sims 3 restaurants are a rabbit hole. The Bistro is a semi rabbit hole that opens up at 11am and closes at 11pm. Your Sim can visit the bistro and have a drink, or eat there alone or with other Sims. §50 - breakfast, brunch, or lunch, and §75 costs a diner per Sim. when Sims eat or drink inside, they'll always change in their formal attire before entering. Sims can also eat outside. They'll enter briefly and take out a plate with food and eat it at an available table outside. Diners are open 24 hours a day. They work similar to Bistros. You can also have drinks or eat alone or with other Sims. The biggest difference is the price. Diner is much cheaper than a Bistro.
With Sims 3: Into The Future, a Food Synthesizer was added to the game. When it's placed in a community lot, it will spawn waiters that will serve food to Sims.
Business as Usual Bistro is a premium Sims 3 Store content. It works like a regular restaurant. There is no host and the menus are already placed on the tables. After you sit, you can click on the menu and choose a meal to order. The chef is the one taking the orders, cooking the meals and serving them to the guests.
Sims 4
In The Sims 4, the dining experience was added with Sims 4 Dine Out. Every restaurant has a host that is a random NPC, that is responsible for managing the tables. When your Sim enters a restaurant, they must go to the host station and request a table. Sims will autonomously read the menu. When you decide to order, the food menu will pop up showing 4 categories: Drinks, Appetizers, Main Course, and Dessert. Sims can order up to one drink and one meal at a time. After you choose a meal, a waiter will come to take your order. The Chef is always busy cooking meals in the kitchen. After the food is ready, the waiter will take the covered platter and bring it to your table.
Who is Your Winner?
You can easily tell that the Sims 2 was made with the most amount of love. The animation and attention to detail they threw in was groundbreaking for its time. We really need a Remaster of The Sims 2.

It's actually also tied to relationship! The lower the relationship with the waiter, the more likely they are to drop food on you. I guess they try harder when they like you 😆

there’s a complete interactive restaurant set from the store but it was such slow & buggy playing on that lot i think they came up with a fix for it i think regardless of that i liked it a lot compared to rabbit hole dining
many things in the sims 3 are not that detailed, the sims 3 improved some things but i did also a step back in many things as well,
I recently tried out the sims 3 for the first time since the sims 4 came out and it’s so boring. I felt like there was nothing to do. I only have the base game at this point though

Credit to the Sims 1 for the little detail of the host actually picking up the menus before he shows sims to their table and then handing them to each sim. I don't think I ever appreciated that detail when I was a kid. It makes it so much more authentic.

I know we're always saying this but Sims 2 was truly amazing. The attention of details was impressive and the game didn't feel empty. The Dine Out in Sims 4 is so messy, I think my sims never ate a whole meal normally, they would always get up from the table and do all kind of weird shit.

I just realized Sims 3 did not have a proper dine-out related expansion like the Sims 1, 2 and 4. They just expected the rabbit holes will fill that void and got done with it. 😂

Considering that Sims 3 was an open world. I always used the restaurant as a way to keep a sim or two busy while I focused on something else, especially if it was a date.

I dont need sims 5. I need sims 2 remastered. With more functions, open world, sims 4 stuff like the events, etc. I loved the cutscenes the most.
1- Sims 2: The most detailed of all games. Love all the interactions and having the ability to propose.
2- Sims 1: Nice little details, but you can't choose what they eat, just the number of courses.
3- Sims 3: Basic and boring, but at least it works. It's just like eating at home.
4- Sims 4: More detailed than 3, but it doesn't work at all. It's buggy as hell.

Not mentioned in the video but in the sims 2, if you correctly order the food your group or date wants, you get a bonus to the outing/date meter. But not if you do the chef’s choice.
I love sims 2 dine out. It’s so cute when they could make surprise proposals over the table or when they throw food at each other.
No wonder i feel so empty while playing ts4, i used to play ts2 so much when i was young. That game surely made with love 😢 i missed it so much
in Sims 2 if you are friends with a host then you hug when greeting and often you get a discount on a bill (smth around 10-15%)

Keep in mind Sims 2 would not be possible with Sims 1. I think a lot of people are just shrugging it off but that game is what helped the improve and create ts2

Tbh Sims 3 not focusing a lot in dine out is pretty understandable since is Open world and it would be pretty hard to make it run as well as...well...the entire world. So it was probably the Best idea to focus on other things

one time in ts4 my pregnant sim was out eating with her husband, she got up from the table, peed on herself and passed out from exhaustion (right in the piss puddle) in front of everyone in the restaurant. what a romantic night out.
A great series. - I forgot how many details TS1 had; graphics are the worst but gameplay is the best. Now I know why my TS1 Sims were dining out out a lot, unlike my TS2 Sims who dine out only rarely. In this aspect, TS3 is just a poor relative, and I never bought the TS4 DLC (or whatever); it doesn't seem like I missed much.

Sims 4 gets very glitchy in restaurants. Eventually, the restaurant does a hard reset, popping everyone up from their tables and stopping everything.
I have to again give it to Sims 2, for the overall experience. However, there are aspects of The Sims (i.e. 3 course meals, footsies under the table, the busboy, and the guitar/violinist and pianist), that I wish followed throughout tge mainline series. Sims 2, you can place a piano, guitar, violin, or any/all intstruments, but you likely will get a bunch of unskilled sims playing. But on the other hand, any Sims 2 community lot can have a restaurant (bowling alleys, poker/pool halls, gaming, nightclubs, shops, campus lots with University, Apartments with Apartment Life, etc.). With Sims 2, an entire group will sit together, unlike other games. There is also a chance that the waiter/waitress can also spill your meal on top of you, which will normally result in a free meal, as well as free meal coupons delivered to your mailbox (that can be redeemed anywhere).
Also, in both Sims 2 and Sims 3, you can get food poisoning whilst dining out. However, Sims 2 is the only mainline game whereby a sim could ultimately die from it (yay, for realism ☠.)❣Interesting side tangent, in The Sims: Vacation, if your sim eats from a buffet table with low hygiene, Montezuma's Revenge (Poopy Pants) will likely follow (not deadly, but embarrassing and comical).
I do love The Business as Usual Bistro (from the Sims 3 Store), however, without mods it is truly broken. Groups are likely not to sit together, children cannot order from menus, nor eat there, and due to the chef doing everything, the place often just becomes more of a hangout, whereby, you are lucky if your sims get served, let alone any other visiting sims. Guess, The Bistro was a precursor for the dining experience of the Sims 4.
In theory, Sims 4 should outshine the rest, given that sims are unlimited to how much they order, as long as they remain seated. Whelp, you are lucky if they remain seated during their first choice (or even prior to its arrival). The dining out experience is more akin to a cafeteria experience (only fancy clothes might be worn), with sims talking to others across the room, getting up to dance, do push ups, etc. Sims 4 is just one hot mess.
I didn’t know sims 1 was so detailed. I played it on a windows 98 computer and with how long the loading times were I just never left home lol. Love the outside restaurant with pianist and the them autonomously cleaning the tables

I really wish they revisited the fancy dining experience in TS3 (I'm aware of the store set). I'm fine with the rabbit hole at this point (not desirable but it's a losing battle), but could they at least have a waiter bring out the food?? It looks so silly when your sims are in gowns/tux taking out a cheap looking plate to sit down on patio chairs and scarf down their food. They can do away with the host and the chef, just keep the waiter who can go between the rabbit hole and your sims' table.

it's so buggy going to a restaurant in Sims 4, my Sims never have the full meal they ordered and they never stay at the table the whole length of dinner.

Although The Sims 2 has the best dining experience, let's give credit to The Sims 3 for being the only game to have dining in the Base Game, as well as every world that came in its expansions.
Sims 4 dine out you go on a breakfast date and finish with a late night breakfast
I love how you would randomly see other sims dining together in Sims 1. The other games they always seemed to be solo.

TS4: Dine Out also has various new interactions when eating. There's food related conversation topics at all times. There's also "Feed a bite" and "Steal a bite" when sims are seated side-by-side in a booth or on a picnic bench (as long as they are eating and still have food to feed/steal from) - They don't need to be at a restaurant for this, but the seating type and timing is a must.
Photos can only be taken of the Experimental food and it's an official collection of photos.
Children/Childish/Erratic sims will draw on placemats autonomously, but everyone can do it manually - You can also take home unfinished placemats (or find the placemats in debug) and place them on dining tables at home as a fun kid activity.
Restaurants with bars also spawn bartenders and sims will autonomously buy drinks while waiting for a table.
Date goals are different, with interactions around the food, if a date is at a restaurant.
"Bring out cake" buys a whole cake from the restaurant that sims serve themselves from, it's not from their inventory - They can add birthday candles or a wedding cake topper to it to celebrate before calling sims to grab a slice.

Sims 2 is my favorite. I couldn't believe the leap from the Sims 1 graphics and game play to the Sims 2. Then I was super excited for SIms 3 only feel somewhat let down, but still played it. Then there was Sims 4..... I think I played for a total of 4 hours and just couldn't make myself play anymore. Everything was so boring, the world felt stifling after the open world of Sims 3, and the interesting world and random interactions with other Sims in the Sims 2.....
Back in the day we owned the original CD"s for Sims 2. After we lost the ability to play that, my son was lucky enough to get it again from EA (A long, long time ago. They sadly don't offer it anymore) because he had the original codes that came in the boxes. Every now and then I still to play it. I would gladly pay hundreds for Sims 2 and all its expansions and stuff packs, if it was made available again.

And in TS2 Open for Business EP, your sim can own and operate their own restaurant, or any other business for that matter. The sky is the limit with creativity in the TS2.
If the Sims 4 Dine Out system would be working , it can be the winner, but the biggest problem with S4 it’s that is soooo broken!! If do you want to go to dinner, you will need to prepare for pass all day at the restaurant because the bugs. 🤢

I've been playing sims 2 forever and never realized there was a thought bubble above their head which indicated what they wanted, and that's what chef choice was. I also never realized their eyes get big when drinking water.

This minor problem i have with the dining scenes (ts3) is that i wish the sound engineers actually cut into something for the cutlery sound effects. It's just so grating to hear knife and fork squeaking on a plate 😩
