Congrats on 50k, Mary! Here's to 50k more. Can't wait to see you get that 100k creator award. It was a pleasure getting to work on this with you. From a fan of your content to a friend via Finn. Seriously so much love for you!
Would love to see a video on Indian or Primitive Man. Indian in particular has the most acidic vocals I've ever heard and I have no idea how he does it.
definitely exhales, there is a lot of power behind his vocals live. surprising to hear his lows aren’t as low as they normally are on this new album (this track at least). he also sticks his tongue out when he does highs, i think it helps him to get those higher shrill screams that sound inhuman. didn’t hear any of that on this track though.
Thank you for making this video. Dylan has a voice like no other; it’s very unique to my ears. In an endless sea of death and grind where all vocalists sound the same to me, I can pick his out easily
Not a metal vocalist but still an idea to cover: Jeff Smith from Jeromes Dream? He basically just does punk yelling with megaphone distortion on their later material, but the early stuff (up to their split with Orchid, Seeing Means More Than Safety is the classic) features these really horrific high pitched wails. What the hell is going on there? Sounds like a guy dying, but still oddly melodic, so it's definitely not the same uncontrolled shriek from the lungs that I've managed.
In the same vein (to an astonishing degree actually)-though very much more along the extreme side of things (metal is just the start of the conversation)-The Body would be maybe a slightly more appropriate one to get into, especially if she’s looking to do, like I said and like this video suggests, something more along the lines of metal.
Great stuff! I'd love to hear your thoughts on Dave Hunt from Anaal Nathrakh and how he does some of those incredible piercing shrieks and guttural almost bubbling lows

his voice with distortion sounds a lot like max cavalera when he was younger. which is interesting because max started off with more of a false chord like scream and turned it up a notch with the roots album. also, do you think learning voice with distortion is better done by combining pitch with false chord, or fry screaming?
The cat on your shirt! Mary Z, thanks for being you. I have a classical teacher who is wonderful but I can only sing pretty with her. You’re helping me widen my repertoire.
I was doing this style of vocals in my parents house in 05 and playing guitar together using distortion pedals and delay for vocals the high pitch style is awesome
I found out early on that it is not supposed to hurt, fortunately for me i never damaged my voice but i did get smarter about trying this type of vocal. I have a pretty deep speaking voice so i found out i'm more comfortable on the lower end. highs are not for me and i never want to risk a potential bleed. dylan must have great vocal control with how heavy they tour i know I'd be fried!
You're awesome! I love your videos, they're really informative, you're really knowledgeable about your stuff and your tips are very useful. Love your smile too.
This guy and the vocalist from Knoll blow my mind. I want to learn those super high pitched screams! I can scream but those are on another level I cant figure out. I also want to learn those vocals that Travis from Cattle Decapitation and dude from Knoll does that have multiple tones at once that sound really inhuman and unholy. I can't find anyone talking about it very much.
Oh! Now I get what you mean by voice with distortion haha, I think maybe I skipped those ones coz I thought it was something else. I'll go back and check them out, sounds like a style I just worked out recently but I wasn't sure what to call it. Btw I definitely respect that you give so much information, I used to watch videos by another channel but nowadays they seem MUCH more protective of their methods and have some really ridiculous Ts&Cs for their Skype lessons, such a shame. Glad I saw some of their false chord exercises while I had the chance, helped me improve, buuuuut moving on lol. I always wanna get better, so yeah I'll have to watch more of your stuff ^_^
This was so sick to see! Dylan is at the top of the game in heavy vocals hands down. Been really interested on his techniques in the past (particularly his notorious scream in "Vessel Deserted"). I don't believe his skills are inhaled, there's too much depth and force.
i know this is an older video but i have to ask, do you have any tips for yells? i have a hard time frying and false chords and yells seem to come more natural to me.
HI Mary Z, I learn a lot about screaming from your video but may i ask that Corey Taylor from slipknot is he just singing with grit or is it a false cord scream already in the song like people=shit or socialpsycho and thank you for all of the video it really help a lot!!
It would be interesting to have a similar analysis of some singers from back then with unique voices - what is e.g. guys like Sting (Police) and Jon Andersson (Yes) really doing to sound the way they do?
I've tried fry screaming for months almost a year and I almost had it but I guess I didn't cause like when I do guttural screams I dont have the burning feeling on my soft palate not even when I'm doing highs too, I dont know if I've been doing it correct. If you can please respond.
Please check out Dickie Allen's witchy highs and explain what's going on with those, you're the only person that's good at making these kinds of videos and I'm lost as to how he does them
Maybe it's fry with false chord layered over it. Like, at the beginning where it was lower in pitch. It's too distortion for it to be voice, I think. I mean, I dunno, but I've been learning how to isolate the false chord, and that carries the sound signature of false chord, but still with the fuzz and compressed feel of fry. But I dunno. Either way, that's one heck of a band. How do I know stuff like Burgerkill but not this? Weird.
I really don’t think they’re inhales, but like you said, the production and the mixing of the vocals can sometimes make that unclear. Another great video! 🔥🤘🏼🤘🏼
Good video, I like listening to you talk about music/vocals. No offense to any fans of this band but it’s not my style and I love extreme metal but I’m super picky about it. My point is that even if I don’t care for the song, I’ll still watch the video because your so cooooooool.
I cant maintain a growl. The perfect growl come out when im relaxed or at the toilet lol. Any idea how to fix that and have a consistent growl whenever I want?
Its a shame to not have the isolated vocal tracks... Id like to hear it without distort. We used to frown upon cupping the mic... Now theres keyboarding the mic... lol idk any more... Ima keep my grind primitive but dang this tech is fancy... This vid was very good, the harm reduction comments she makes near the end is important!!!! nobody wants nodes... Brian Adams could have used this advice.
I agree with you on the Inhales going more so against rather than with However when I hear dudes winging it like m.ua-cam.com/video/j6fmIszxE_A/v-deo.html The textures awe me.

In my opinion, Dylan Walker is the best in the game right now and Full of Hell's new album is absolutely incredible. Great video.
What he does in silmaril is unbelievable
Congrats on 50k, Mary! Here's to 50k more. Can't wait to see you get that 100k creator award.

Yo, did not expect to see some Full of Hell here. Sweet!
Would love to see a video on Indian or Primitive Man. Indian in particular has the most acidic vocals I've ever heard and I have no idea how he does it.
i love primtive man

Tongue placement helps a lot
Brad sent me! Would love to know your thoughts on Deafheaven vocalist, George Clarke
Hey friend! Thanks for coming and checking our Mary's video.
That One Guy I second this
Weak
Great informative video, would love to hear your thoughts on Travis Ryan of Cattle Decapitation.
Travis is one of my fave vocalists as well
I was just about to post a very similar comment! His vocals are nuts
Nice profile pic, Ad Nauseam is badass.
One of the best in extreme metal. His " operatic " shrieks are absolutely phenomenal.
Brilliant band Jaxon. Hope they give us the new album sometime soon already.
Thank you for making this video. Dylan has a voice like no other; it’s very unique to my ears. In an endless sea of death and grind where all vocalists sound the same to me, I can pick his out easily

Love your smile; great in-depth analysis as well!
Great stuff! I'd love to hear your thoughts on Dave Hunt from Anaal Nathrakh and how he does some of those incredible piercing shrieks and guttural almost bubbling lows
Dave is MENTAL! And then that operatic singing. I also reviewed Anaal Nathrakh's newest album and was quite fond of it!
I agree that your channel has been the best that I have seen on youtube. Thanks.
He says he mostly uses more of a head voice for his vocals besides those types of vocals in the beginning of the song.
I would love to hear your thoughts on Travis Ryan of Cattle Decapitation
I was looking for this comment. He is a different beast.

I've seen them live and I gotta say. Thats all exhale. You can really tell live
I discovered his technique trying to combine black metal highs with singing long before I ever heard his voice
his voice with distortion sounds a lot like max cavalera when he was younger. which is interesting because max started off with more of a false chord like scream and turned it up a notch with the roots album. also, do you think learning voice with distortion is better done by combining pitch with false chord, or fry screaming?
Awesome video. Hope you do more extreme metal artists! Would love to hear what you think
I saw full of hell with primitive man a few years ago. Such a good show. Dylan is insane live.
I miss shows 😭😭
The cat on your shirt!

Brad sent us here, enjoyed the stay Mary!
Thanks for heading to check out Mary's video! :)
Great content Mary. You really need to do Travis Ryan from Cattle Decap he does things that no one else does.
Just saw him play in Vegas! Unreal!
Thank you sm you're a real one for this
Explain mike pattons vocalsss plissss
That's obvious: he sold his soul to santa. Gifts of vocally goodness. He traded macaroni.
I want you to explain Chuck Schuldiner's screams, on live in L.A his screams're awesome
The Sound Of Perseverence and Symbolic era \m/

been waiting from this for a while
Mary Z...I loooove how you break the mechanics of vocals down for us! You’re my favorite voice teacher on the UA-cams 🖤✨🤘🏻✨🖤
Sue Sin Thank you! 🤘🤘
Love this band. Great job!!!
Oh! Now I get what you mean by voice with distortion haha, I think maybe I skipped those ones coz I thought it was something else. I'll go back and check them out, sounds like a style I just worked out recently but I wasn't sure what to call it.

Great video, Full of Hell is amazing. :)
I just wanna know wth he’s doing to make that inhuman noise in Vessel Deserted
you mean the "hawk cry" before the breakdown? i guess it is some inhale technique, something chino from the deftones does a lot!
@@FIN_Der-Otter definitely just a super high shriek.
what I came here for hahaha
Dude, its gonna sound funny, but its literally just a high ass murder type exhale scream. I know cause ive been able to do similar shit 😂
I think it's the whistle tone technique
the high pitch scream in vessle deserted would be interesting
This was so sick to see! Dylan is at the top of the game in heavy vocals hands down. Been really interested on his techniques in the past (particularly his notorious scream in "Vessel Deserted"). I don't believe his skills are inhaled, there's too much depth and force.
I was hoping someone was going to bring up Vessel Deserted
What do you think of the vocals on Converge - Jane Doe?
Please do a video on Brian from Knocked Loose!
I would love to see you make a video about Chino of Deftones vocal style.
i know this is an older video but i have to ask, do you have any tips for yells? i have a hard time frying and false chords and yells seem to come more natural to me.
I think you need to explain what Keisuke is doing in "Deviloof". That dude is a BEAST.
The agonist released a new single today. Is vicky using fry screaming towards the end?
HI Mary Z, I learn a lot about screaming from your video but may i ask that Corey Taylor from slipknot is he just singing with grit or is it a false cord scream already in the song like people=shit or socialpsycho and thank you for all of the video it really help a lot!!
Is Todd Jones on this track?

Could you do one on Devin Townsend?
Please check out Dickie Allen's witchy highs and explain what's going on with those, you're the only person that's good at making these kinds of videos and I'm lost as to how he does them
how about Ryan McKenney from Trap Them?
Please do an Oathbreaker video!
Maybe it's fry with false chord layered over it. Like, at the beginning where it was lower in pitch. It's too distortion for it to be voice, I think. What about Dickie Allen scream techniques from infant annihilator OR Cj mcCreery from lorna shore
That shirt is everything! Cats are the best lol
Love your vids you should react to Maynard from tool he's got a unique voice curious to see what you think about it
Dylan is amazing. he is monster voice box
Do Mike Patton!!
A tip from me is to check out Disentombs new single. Jordan has the best gutturals in all of death metal IMO.
Disentomb rocks!
I cant maintain a growl. The perfect growl come out when im relaxed or at the toilet lol. Any idea how to fix that and have a consistent growl whenever I want?

Got a Dani filth video?

Should totally do Dan Watson from Enterprise earth. Has an ungodly range of vocals.
Do Dave mustaine's double voice.
Is it weird that I can do Black Metal/Death Metal style vocals easily but I can’t do Clean Vocals at all?
I’m the exact opposite lol. I wish I could do those Extreme Metal vocals though, I just don’t have anywhere to practice lol
Frankie Bloodshed We should make a band, I can play guitar and do extreme vocals and you can do the clean vocals lol.
Not at all
I agree with you on the Inhales going more so against rather than with However when I hear dudes winging it like m.ua-cam.com/video/j6fmIszxE_A/v-deo.html

That's heavy af
Just to point this out, there's also a lot of distortion effect in the vocal track, that's added in the mix.
Hey!! Will you do a reaction to the old beartooth or the devil wears Prada!!
watch it live, its exhale.
Reminds me of Steve Austin from today is the day
the answer is simple: he has a demon
Inhale screams are bullshit anyway, of course Dylan is frying more than KFC
Maynard from TOOL
Yeah specially live u can tell it's fry
BangerTV...you know them? Darn it my secret is out.
Snap cat; cute.
