    I'm reassured to see a quality pro using "older" gear and getting pro results. I'm a hobbyist (high school sports for now) and have a lot of what you run, so I know my gear is capable.....the problem lies with the photographer!

      Better gear certainly helps, especially as technology develops, but don't let it stop you

      @@RobSambles Regarding a secondary/backup camera....I'm selling my 6D today. It's a nice full frame Canon, but it's really not suited for sports. This leaves me with just my 1Dx. We have about the same setup (70-200 2.8 mk-I, 24-70 2.8 mk-II, 400mm 2.8 IS mk-I), so your experience is super relevant to me. I'm planning on having a backup/secondary camera at some point. Locally, I can find a 1Dx for under $800, or a 7D mkII for around $650. Would you recommend getting a second 1Dx as a backup, or save a little and get the 7D mkII?

      @@erik5024 It's always best to have two identical bodies if you plan on using both at the same time. Otherwise the difference in button positions be they large or small will catch you out under pressure and you'll miss a shot.

      As a professional you're running a business and there are only two good reasons to replace gear, one is your existing equipment is at the end of its life and the other is when new equipment gives your competitors an advantage in the eyes of your clients. Otherwise you don't have to buy gear just because something new comes along especially as you'll often find new equipment actually is more about reducing manufacturing costs than genuinely useful new features and things you like and use are sometimes removed until the next iteration.

    Great video as always, Rob! Great reminder that I need to take a laptop cable with me. I often stop at a restaurant after a game to eat, edit and submit and I'd feel better about running to the head when I'm alone. I'll grab a bike lock as well. I can use that with my rolling tool box set.
    I also keep a white balance card in my bag (I'm terrible at remembering to use it) for indoor games. I have a small pop-out grey card from Neewer.

    --Canon 420 EZ Speedlite (2)
    --Neewer Flashgun

    Rob--may be worth looking into upgrading to the 70-200 IS II if you ever use it with the R6. I know the documentation says you need the III to get 12fps mechanical shutter but the II gets it also...I upgraded from a used I to a used II when I got my R6 for a reasonable sum, got a significant performance boost but was mostly to get that green H+

    Excellent video Rob. Always enjoy your input on gear and sports photography in general. In this video you explain that the r6 and the 1dx are your main bodies. My question is when you crop images for editing, is the resolution good in the r6 and 1 dx .. I have a r5 but wish to get a second body either the r6 or perhaps the r7. I have no issues with the r5 when it comes to cropping but how do you find the r6 when cropping an image?

    Interesting as always Rob. I use my R6 on the 400 and found I no longer need the converter. I just flip the R6 into 1.6x crop mode to get the extra reach. Added advantage is I don’t lose 2 stops doing it can still shoot at 2.8

    iv just sold my panasonic fz1000 bridge camera - i had previously owned fuji stuff but sold that because the lenses were just far too expensive for me as a hobbyist to justify - iv had a good couple of years with the bridge camera and im at the point were i want a larger sensor and the ability to swap lenses etc for shooting motorsports - i was going to buy a canon m50 but then iv been looking at the 7d mk2, a7ii, d750 and so on that sort of level - the 7d is REALLY cheap i can pick up a mint example from MPB for around £175 and then put the £ towards a USM 100-400 or 75-200 f2.8 - i was looking through flickR and came across some albums of motorbiking at the track shot on the original 7d and my god, the files are SERIOUSLY CLEAN!

    Very entertaining and interesting video Rob. I was having a cup of tea made on my camping stove as the storm down here in W. Wales has brought down the power lines, when your notification pinged up. Good timing.
    I,ve been thinking of getting a roller case myself as the old body is getting a bit tired of carrying heavy bags. Also, as I seem to be shooting quite a bit more sport these days I am considering getting a 300 f2. 8 to go with the 70-200. I cannot afford to get a 400 so figured the 300 to be a reasonable compromise.
    Best wishes.

      @@garymann499 No problem Gary. A 4x4 camera roller bag would be handy 😄😄. What are you shooting with the 300? I am currently shooting a lot of school rugby and although I have the 100-400 mkii I prefer to use the fast 70-200 as light down here is often crap. I think the 300 on a second body would be very useful and if absolutely necessary I could always pop the 1.4x extender on it to give me a 420 f4.

    Hi Rob! I am new to sports photography and looking at purchasing my first 1DX! Very very small budget but there are a couple I can get within that, the only issue I have is that they have around 1,000,000 (yep 6 0’s) shutter count. Do you think that’s maybe too much?

Is it worth the extra money for more space or 64gbs is enough?

    Make sure you rent the RF 70-200 before you commit to it (or take a loaner from CPS). I found it unusable for sports. The zoom ring is too difficult to use in action. I barely made it through half a basketball game before it went back in the bag. The external zoom requires too much travel and effort to use compared to the EF.

    I wanted to warn you about your bike-lock setup that a pair of scissors could make the lock irrelevant. A quick snip through the handle and the bag and everything in it would be gone, leaving you with the lock still in one piece.

    • @RobSambles
      @RobSambles 2 роки тому +2

      Yep you're right. Its more of a deterant though, its never left alone generally.

    • @markkempton4579
      @markkempton4579 2 роки тому +1

      It's more about deterring a crime of convenience. If a kid wanders by and sees something unattended, they might be tempted, but even the presence of a lock is going to make them think twice. If someone is targeting the theft, they're just as likely to have wire cutters than scissors and just cut the cable. But it prevents the most preventable thefts. Anything else would require effort and will draw attention on the sidelines.
