  • A common repair for the Nikon D80 is for the ERR message on the top LCD and usually a whirring noise with a stuck mirror partially up. It's caused by a split gear on the mirror motor and is easily replaced. Part 1 shows the disassembly and replacement of the gear with one purchased at online auction sites. Part 2 shows the reassembly of the camera.

Thank you! Didn't have the split gear, but the problem with the spring loaded encoder wheel. Worked fine. And in comparison to other videos you managed not to remove the sensor, which would ruin the AF setting. This is the much better way (removing the mirror box and leaving the sensor in place). Thank you so much for your effort to record your repair and share it!

Thank you! This is very useful video. Great shooting angles and highlights, especially those parts to open flash and discharge capacity. I managed to tear my D80 apart and put them together with new split gear. Now the mirrow can turn. However get another error. Mirror now flip 3 times quickly when trying taking picture, but I can see shutter curtain remain closed all the time. Any hints? could it be the sequence switch?

Yes, likely the sequence switch, the contacts are easily bent when the gearbox is disassembled. Be sure they are all even and high enough to make contact with the circuit board, since it's hard to check electrically.

I could possibly do this and fix my D80, but im concerned with keeping track of what screw goes where? And tricks to that?

If you've got room put the screws on your workspace in the location and spacing that you removed them from. At 12 o'clock place the two screws removed from either side of the eyepiece on the back. To the right of them place the right side back cover screws. Below these lay out the bottom cover screws, etc. (be sure not to sneeze). I reinsert the tiny screws that hold flex circuits after the circuit has been lifted. I've seen some people draw an outline of the camera back, sides, top and bottom then punch the screws thru the paper at the proper locations but seems time consuming to me. Nikon is notorious for making a huge variety of screw diameters, lengths, and types. Canon not nearly so bad.

Excellent work! I started taking my camera apart. It was going well until I got to the auto focus/manual focus lever. I can't figure out how to get the button off, so the disassembly can't go any further. Any tips on the auto focus/manual focus button lever removal please?

Refer to 2:40 - use a sewing needle held by pliers to wedge behind the cover disk on the AF/Man lever, then unscrew the knob from the body

@@ghccrtube5007 Thank you. I didn't understand what I was trying to remove. Done now! The capacitor is discharged and the camera disassembled up to the desoldering stage.
Could you say what voltage you put into the shutter motor prior to reassembly please?

@@electronaut7429 No more than about 3 volts should activate it without wrecking other circuits.
