I'm in Mississippi and mine was fantastic, but I could've lived 10 minutes away and had terrible schooling. It's definitely hit or miss. I hope Republicans aren't serious about dissolving the department of education, but I'm pretty sure they mean to actually do that. There's actually some interesting statistics on this. On average, homeschooled students score about 15% higher than the public school average on standardized tests, but public schools have a significantly higher high school graduation rate than homeschooling. I think the higher scores on standardized tests disappear when you control for public schools that don't emphasize test prep. One of the biggest impacts on things like SAT score is simply whether or not you've actually taken the practice test before taking the real one. Don't quote me on this, but I think it's more probable that a homeschooling curriculum includes a practice SAT than an average public school one. I don't have a problem with homeschooling if the syllabus is at least competitive with public schools. But it's rare to have a single parent, or even two, who can comprehensively cover the breadth of expertise needed for teaching a solid primary education. That's why most schools have teachers who only teach the subject they specialised in. Ideally, you have someone with a language degree in teaching language, someone with a math degree teaching math, someone with a chemistry degree teaching chemistry, etc. Unless a parent is a genuine polymath, it would seem they would often times need to learn the material along with the student what sounds like a suboptimal way to teach. If there is no good alternative and parents are actually capable of providing a good education, then go for it. It's just that the absolute bottom of the barrel dumbest people I've ever known were homeschooled, and nobody deserves to slip through the cracks. It's a touchy subject because it's not like education has any one-size-fits-all solution, and there are definitely parties in both public education and homeschooling who fail to give students the education they deserve at no fault of the students. I have seen some people slip through the cracks due to poor decisions their custodians made on their behalf when they were kids and how much extra difficulty they had to deal with in life for no good reason. And there's societal impacts. Education is everything, more than ever in the modern global age.
The sad part is they were just under 20% of the vote (was 23%, but a small portion of them do vote the other way), but they are 100% of their party's leadership.
