Good Morning, friends! I hope you are all doing well and have been enjoying some warm weather wherever you are. Things are starting to warm up here and it won't be long before the garden is exploding with life. Did you plant anything this year? What are you most excited to see growing this time of year? For me it's definitely the asparagus and rhubarb, two of my favourite things!
I had an ips beetle infestation on my pine trees and I sprayed my 4 acres of trees with a Herbicide as recommended in a farm co-op bulletin. It killed ever tree on my damn tree farm. What to hell?
I’m in zone 4 and experiment a lot. I utilize many plants few consider in their food forests, but are valued for centuries, so I include. Pine, juniper, lilac, crabapple, birch, white willow, gooseberry, red lake current, raspberry, rhubarb, Hansen cherry, elderberry, dew berry, roses, dill, horseradish, seaberry, asparagus & hostas. Some are medicinals and others edibles.
Ok! Can I PAAALEASE just come live in a hollowed out tree in your yard???? OH MY WORD, THE VIEWS ARE STUNNING!!!! Holy cow! Just gorgeous. The entire property is so beautiful. I’ll work the gardens, help with kiddos, help with animals, cook, whatever ya need! LOL It seriously is a special place. Such a perfect place for raising your amazing family. I love what you did with the flower beds by the house. The wagon wheels make it look so beautiful! I just love that. You’ll have to post a pic here once the flowers are draped over the wagon too, I bet that’s fabulous!! Fabulous beauty for a fabulously beautiful family! We have to be long lost sisters or something ‘cause I just love you guys too much. Hahahaha Anywho...thanks for sharing sweet friend. Always happy to get an update and find you all well and happy. Until we see you again, God Bless you dear heart and your sweet family. ~Lisa
I am genuinely not kidding when I say you’d be welcome to come here visit anytime, sweet friend. I have a feeling I’d learn a lot from you and we’d have some lovely yaks. It really is lovely this time of year. Minus the mosquitos! Lol
“Ornamental “ crabapples are edible n so too the lilac. Chutney can be made w the crabapple & jelly from the lilac. So don’t separate the concept of a food garden n landscape area. Find “Way of Herbs”. It’s a paperback but one of the most valuable resources to have.
I've never had luck with okra. Your garden beds look gorgeous, and your grass looks so healthy. It makes me want to remove my show and walk through it.
The two of you did a great job in sharing this with a lot of interesting gardening topics and ideas on how to use entire plants as with the rhubarb leaves!
New growth produces apples and all that wood takes energy. After watching a couple of Apple pruning vids you’ll figure it out. Gauchi was mentioned. He is very immobile so wants branches with fruit low so he can reach. Me too! One video I watched suggested three verticals are good (just shor)
Love the sound of thunder. And Strawberry rhubarb pie is the best. Wish I could cook, I would live on it if I could. All I know about trees is you prune them in the fall to winter months. :)
I love that You are growing in that old wagon. I’ve always wanted a wagon for our farm. I’m used to always go to a restaurant and order cobbler thinking, “oh I love cobbler!” Then I would get it and be disappointed, because it turns out, I don’t really like cobbler. What I love is crisp.
Everything looks amazing! You are living the dream I had when I was your age with young children. And your rhubarb! As the song goes "Bee Bop a Rebop Rhubarb pie". Love your videos. Stay safe, hugs.
You have a nice property, beautiful work you’ve done. That’s a great space for your pool. I was looking for gardening in Zone 4, and I’m glad I found your channel.
Lovely video. I have planted tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, sunflowers, cabbage, carrots, beets, spinach, kale, lettuce, peppers and more. I love spring before the bugs get bad. Still lots to do but we'll keep working. I want to try to save the cabbage like you did and see how long it lasts. Already harvesting onions, baby kale, spinach and lettuce.
I saw on Art and Bri home steading video where they pruned their apple trees down where all 3 shoots are coming out on yours. I sugest you go to their channel and send them a message. Their trees got fuller and lot more sprouts coming out! Really enjoyed your video, your garden is beautiful! Love your home place, very nice! Have a blessed day!
Paul Gautschi with Back to Eden Gardening is extremely knowledgeable about apple trees and he has a video on how and when to prune them. He also has his trees grow laterally and not vertically. I will find a link for him and post it if you like.
Great update! Thank you. Your gardens are looking amazing. For the hardy kiwi - I have one and yes, the plant needs maturity for the leaves to show white tips. Hope you have a wonderful gardening season. We were thankful for the rain we received this weekend.
My rhubarbe, gifted from my mother's "ancient" plant, is thriving as usual. The veggie starts I bought (couldn't plant from seed this year) are patiently waiting for me to move the chicken coop from its temporary winter home, in the tiny garden bed, so that they can get it the ground. Motivation is lacking and I'm avoiding the coop cause our backyard hens were killed about a month ago. Darn weasel! What I'm most looking forward to is seeing if we can grow brussel sprouts! Love the food forest. It's looking amazing! Can't wait to hear about your trade techniques. A POOL!? Mom of The Year AWARD goes tooooo....CHELSEA!!
My kids are pretty excited! It’s way more of a project to instal it than I thought it was going to be, but we’ll get it done, hopefully before the summer is over! Lol I’m sorry to hear about your chickens! How awful! I wish we lived closer - I’d set you up with some new chicks.❤️
My Mama was an okra guru...I can remember her putting her okra seeds in a container of very warm water to soak overnight...it softens them and gives them a jump start...then she would sow them in her rows..of course we lived in SE Ga...very warm in April...she would have so much okra she would give it away and have to cut it every day or 2...never let it get over 3 inches long she would say...lol..oh and it likes wet ground...
Thank you!I hope someone can tell us. There were lots of flowers at the very tips of all those long branches, but I need to find a way to either get branches to grow out of those main ones, or prune it somehow so it gets bushy.
Your property is so beautiful! The views are amazing. We live on the side of a mountain, so my views are limited, but love the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. So... whenever I leave home it's always a joy to drive with so many beautiful views...
Thanks for the GREAT video!!! I’ve not been feeling well so I haven’t planted my garden yet. You have inspired me to start putting it in this wk. I was so excited that my strawberries I planted last yr came up again this yr & I’ve already eaten a few of them & they’re yummy! From your friend Amy Jones Apex, NC & N Myrtle Beach, SC
Really looking good. Thumbs and big toes up. Like your use of varied mulching materials for weed control and moisture retention. Mother Nature does not like her skin exposed to hot sun and pounding rain. Weeds are her first layer of covering. the old guy Bert
I would prune them NOW, with clean loppers, and make sure you cut each branch rather low, and with an OUTWARD facing bud, so it continues to grow vase shaped.
Apple trees are not "supposed" to have any set look. You need a bushy tree to get a lot of apples (vertical shoots don't produce fruit). If branches cross, that will cause damage on windy days and invite disease. Prune one out. Then there's personal preference.
Your garden looks amazing! I love the rhubarb ❤️ My mum used to cook it in a bit of orange juice and add raisins to it, with a bit of sugar or honey it makes for a great dessert. Especially if you add some custard on the side 😊
For apple tree advice, THE go-to person is youtube channel "skillcult". Don't be put off by the name, the guy is super into apples, best ways to prune, grafting, growing new varieties, and lots of other very exciting homesteading stuff. He should be able to help you out.
YES! Goodbye to okra! I think that is an excellent thought and you could use the space for more enjoyable veggies! I am NOT a fan of okra...did you guess? The flowers and shrubs are looking good and soon will be feeling beautiful for sure. As for the apple trees...no idea whatsoever so I will be curious as to what you end up doing. I am hoping to put my garden in this week. I have only my potatoes in. Chelsea girl, we have had soooooooooo much rain here in the middle of the mitten that I fear this could be a tough garden season. I truly enjoy the garden tours as its such fun to see what's growing in different climates. I wish Kate success with her impending motherhood as Mama duck is busy about her nesting. Can't wait to see the results from all that sitting!:) Looks like life on LMR is marching forward as the spring moves to summer. Soon we will be canning, freezing and storing for another long winter of all things food for the table. I think that canning is my favorite part of growing things. I think of you often as I watch your vlogs knowing that you are truly in your happy place in the garden. Happy Homesteading!!!:):):)
VICKI! Oh, how I have missed you! Did you get my reply e-mail? I realized now I didn't hear back from you and now I'm wondering if it didn't send. How are you and Jack, besides being drenched by spring rains?
You make me laugh dear Chelsea...you don't have time to think about Jack and I with so many irons in the fire. I did get your email but I have been busy about the business of healing after a bit of an incident at a Menards store in December. I have had 3 back surgeries over the past 13 years and being hit by a lumber cart set me back considerably but that is how life goes sometimes. Other than that AND wondering if God might just shut off the faucet soon we are doing ok. I have been keeping up with all things Little Mountain Ranch just not posting as much trying to give you a break from long winded comments from the mitten!:) Jack is still making all kinds of wood projects just finishing window boxes for a neighbor. I enjoy seeing your flower gardens and glad you don't give up on them. I wonder if we might see a revisiting of your wagon later in the season when all that draping over the sides happens...you know, the "spiller" part of your creativity in the wagon planting. You may not follow me but when you pot container gardens the rule of thumb is to have filler, thriller and spillers. The Master Gardener coming out again...oops! Waiting for an update on the livestock again as you post vlogs and also watching for a new bake with Kate too. So don't miss us, just keep entertaining and enlightening us!!!:):):)
Everything is looking wonderful! Your hard work is going to bring you such great blessings. (P.S. we learned, the hard way, that if the manure was too "fresh" that it would burn the roots! Never did that again. Lol) God bless you, your family & your homestead
Several of my apple trees have the bare branches and leaves at the end and I’ve been wondering the same. I’ll need to do some research, it looks like. We did a version of rhubarb crisp that has an almost sugar cookie like crust - it was DELICIOUS. Also, love the hanging flower boxes!
Awesome job videoing, Kate! So much great info, Chels! I learned a lot ...especially with rhubarb. Mine is a bit skinny this year, so I’ll research when to split my plants. I have a recipe I found online for Sour Cream Rhubarb cookies. They are very tender cookies...not crisp. They are perfect with s cup of tea. 😊. I’ll see if I can get the recipe to you, or wait until we see you IN A MONTH! (Just a teensy bit excited!).
Love your massive garden skills dear. Beautiful where you’re at!! We hope to get blueberries and raspberries along with what we’ve already planted. Oh! I had a snaffoo & deleted your last comment on our garden video on accident 😬😫.
Little Mountain Ranch it’s small apples to what you’re up to!! We have really enjoyed establishing it though, yes. It fuels us to be even more ambitious!! 🤗👩🏻🌾
Okra needs lots of heat and you will be surprised once the conditions are right now fast they grow and produce . A few years ago mine stood taller than me and I'm almost 6 feet . It was like a jungle lol . My sister and neice are looking for me to make some pickled okra and Dill pickles this year . I'll be happy to oblige once the weather straightens out and is more consistent
I've missed your videos, albeit I have lots to get caught up on. I love your property so so beaUtiful! I wish we were zone 6 tho, but who knows with this climate change we might get there. Calgary went from a zone 3 to a zone 4, so there's that. Maybe Mr. Google Pants might know about your apple trees and how and when to prune them.
The deer “pruned” my Apple trees, they then went mad and sent out dozens of shoots! In theory you prune in late summer for fruit production and winter for tree shaping, never taking off more than one third of the canopy at once. In my experience they are quite forgiving so don’t panic too much.
I ordered them from Incredible Seeds in Canada, but they are super hardy and I don't think it matters much where you order them from. Thank you so much!
That thunder made its own closing statement. Interestingly as I watch this, it’s raining and thundering here as well. Do you have a link to the university research and or where those trees are available? Love strawberry rhubarb or mixed berry pie, warm, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, yum.
It’s the University of Saskatchewan Fruit Program and their trees are sold through many nurseries in Canada including Saskatoon Farm in Alberta - you may be able to order through them.
Almost forgot - I love love love your gardens however I can’t help but wonder how on Earth you manage weeding all of that? You mentioned mulch a few times, do you mulch the entire thing each year?
I try to mulch it all and with all of us pitching in it really doesn’t take that long. I hoe a lot and let the weeds I can’t manage stay put. I’d love to have a weed free garden. It that just ain’t gonna happen around here. Lol
I always have been told that one had to cut the asparagus down at the ground level or it would not come back. But it appears as though you just snapped it off? Is there a difference between wild grown and tame varieties? Thank you.
I haven’t heard that before. Generally I do snap them off close to the ground unless I missed a day and they’re extra long. Then I sometimes snap them off higher, but I’ve never had an issue with them now coming back.
nLoved your video, (thanks Kate for helping and congrats on finishing 11th grade.) your views are gorgeous, you are blessed. Their is a you tube channel called: The Gardening Channel with James Prigioni he is a very educated gardener and has a orchard. Look for his video on pruning fruit trees or reach out to him. I'm sure he would be very helpful on pruning your fruit trees. Have a wonderful day and enjoy your crisp.....

There’s no excuse for not knowing how to make a crisp! In between building a house and a homestead you should totally learn how this summer!😉

Your property is amazing! I'm also in Zone 4... really trying to find the right place to grow a food forest.
Your Okra look like mine, and I live in California. I've heard they grow slowly at first, and then take off later. Hopefully we'll both get some!

Great work ❤️
Looks amazing! Thanks so much for sharing you progress. I will have to look closer at one of my spindly rhubarbs to see if it needs dividing now.
It made such a difference.😊
Thanks for the GREAT video!!! I’ve not been feeling well so I haven’t planted my garden yet. You have inspired me to start putting it in this wk. I was so excited that my strawberries I planted last yr came up again this yr & I’ve already eaten a few of them & they’re yummy!

Ugh, I was afraid someone would say that! I’d hate to cut off all the flowers, but it’s been my gut instinct to do just that.
I love it! It Is looking fantastic! Can't wait to see how it, and the pool, change over the season.
You've been very busy! Well done!
Thank you! I put my UA-cam money right back into the farm and I’m so grateful for it. Now to watch it all grow.😊🌱
Enjoyed the tour! Exciting to see all your plants growing! ( congrats Kate! One year left)
Thank you so much - and Kate says thank you, too. :)
Awesome garden! It's coming along very nicely. Kate rocked the photography! Glad you were getting some rain :)
She did, didn’t she! It sure made making a video so much easier!
Everything looks just beautiful!!
Thanks for the tour! Everything looks so good--still a bit chilly here in Montana but I'm ready to plant! Happy Spring!

In theory you prune in late summer for fruit production and winter for tree shaping, never taking off more than one third of the canopy at once. In my experience they are quite forgiving so don’t panic too much.
Thanks for that! They just look so gangly to me. I’m going to see if a neighbour friend who knows trees can come over and check them out.
Wow, your area is just looking so GREEN and Pretty
It’s so lovely this time of year.😊
I love all your video, and with all the information you inspire me to do more. Where did you order your strawberries? Love your food forest!!!
I ordered them from Incredible Seeds in Canada, but they are super hardy and I don't think it matters much where you order them from.
Thank you so much!
You can use rhubarb as a spray for pests.
Little Mountain Ranch I’ll have to look into it. I’ll be 15 minutes from the New Brunswick border on the US side
What a nice video again, really love that channel!

Love your poncho! What is the pattern name? Beautiful garden!
I'm sorry, but it's store-bought. I with I could knit/crochet like that!
Would love to know what pattern you used to make/ knit your poncho?
I wish I made it, but sadly my knitting skills are pretty basic. My sister gave it to me and I’m not sure where she got it from.
I think you’ll get some okra!! You should see mine! It grows grows too fast!
Lol
Hello from Montana, Your rhubarb looks so red. Is the flesh inside red or green? (I've been trying to find a red-fleshed rhubard). Thanks Diane
No, it's green, although the darkest ones have a redder flesh. If you find a red fleshed variety, let me know,
I always have been told that one had to cut the asparagus down at the ground level or it would not come back.
@@LittleMountainRanch , is yours a tame variety or wild grown? I'm asking because now I want to put this to a test on my property.
nLoved your video, (thanks Kate for helping and congrats on finishing 11th grade.) your views are gorgeous, you are blessed.
Thank you! ❤️
Try growing okra in the greenhouse.
I did last year but didn’t have any luck. Someone else did that with the heat that’s coming the might take off. Here’s hoping!
Would this be zone 4a or 4b in Canada? I’m in Saskatchewan 4a
Actually 3b Canada - for a long time I thought we were 4, but turns out I was wrong.
Love the greenhouse! Was it a kit?
No, we designed and built it. I have a series of videos on the build from a few years ago you can check out if you like.
How can I get some of those cherry trees
You can order them online from a place called the Saskatoon Farm.
Pigs!!! Raspberries are off limits.
Patreaon link please
I’m not doing patroon right now - but thank you so much for asking.❤️
How long is your growing season?
Around the end of May-September. We get frost by the end of August usually, but the cold crops still grow.
Little Mountain Ranch that sounds very much like my growing season. We are lucky if we get 100 days.
Found one of them.

Excellent videos! Thanks so much!
Try growing okra in the green house.
I’ve tried twice in my little greenhouse, but I’ll give it a go in the high tunnel this year. Fingers crossed it works this time.
