The track First Dance is one of the best scene setters I have heard for quite some time, there is an almost eerie sense of two ghostly lovers entwined in an ethereal dance of love, through the corridors and dimensions of time itself, this is both beautifully played, with a grace and power that hooks you into the album from the off.
From the mysterious and ethereal opening, the mood is totally transformed with a light, bright and extremely happy composition called Ship to Shore. I defy you not to have a smile on your face whilst listening to this energetic track.
The title track is up next, and it is of course Another Time, Another Place. Once more careful attention is paid to the construction of this piece, this is the signature and main statement of the album, it is so very lovingly constructed and enticing to listen to, the build here is dramatic and one could sense levels of reality colliding within themselves in this very piece. The speed and power here to be honest, is beyond brilliant, then as if by waving a magic wand, the soft passage returns and it is as if we are wondering through a house that is stuck in a vortex of no time, but from each room you enter, you can witness a different age or era unfold, quite amazing and one of my personal favourites off the album.
After that power performance we are now gifted a track called Cherry Blossom. This beautiful and gentle floating piece has a sweet melody that seems to resonate with the subject matter perfectly, one could easily imagine lying on your back, with a loved one and watching the cherry blossoms falling gently upon her face and this would be the perfect soundtrack for that event.
There is a moment of quiet delight within the next composition called, The View from Here. Once more Spielberg has manifested a beautiful melody and a moment to stand in a musical segment of reflection perhaps? The real picturesque feeling portrays a time alone to admire the view of your life’s journey so far, this is done with a simple theme that runs so cleverly through the piece and ends in a way that also introduces us to the second half of the album at the same time.
So we delve into the timeless depth of the second half of the album called Another Time, Another Place, by the gifted Robin Spielberg. In My Dreams is a song of gratitude of surviving the terrible disease Cancer, so yes, we must all celebrate and be positive and live each and every day with gratitude, and Robin had composed something here that deserves an award on its own, this is quite a wonderfully loving piece, that I admire and love deeply, because it truly moved me.
I sense that you’re in awe at the talents of Robin Spielberg and so you should be, she is a master builder of piano based music, so just settle back for a second and let her take you on a smooth trip, with a piece called After All. In a way it could be said it follows nicely on from the last piece, while the music has a relaxed happy feel, there is an underpinned motif of a life purpose perhaps, a reason for it all? One of those moments when you look into the sunset and say, hey! I’m doing here, what I should be.
Well this is the moment has come for to go to a secret location, so that you may see the time machine, and for the next 7 minutes and 49 seconds you can become The Time Traveller. Whether it is H.G Wells or The Time Tunnel or even Doctor Who, people have been fascinated by this eternal subject since, well forever! Here Spielberg creates a fun, but mysterious pathway to the past and the future, we can watch the years drift past in the comfort of our machine and see history as it actually formed and if you have this music on while you journey, you will have the perfect soundtrack to time travel and yes, this is my personal favourite, from the album.
Candlelight Waltz is a light and wonderfully relaxed moment of dance and Robin’s creations is filled with cheer, magical and simply fun.
A Whisper in the Wind is up next, there was once more something haunting about this piece, it appears light like the wind, but one can almost sense a second presence here, as it almost plays along with Spielberg on piano, this is very cleverly played by the artist, who uses the notes and chords so majestically, to manifest a truly captivating composition, I had to keep listening to this track over and again, it is as if a message is blowing on the wind and this whisper at the very end of the piece, just dissipates mysteriously from ear shot and fades, like a small cloud on a warm summers day.
We now find ourselves at the last track called O Mio Babbino Caro (Oh my beloved father), the perfect ending piece, this is true music from the heart and of course a rendition of the soprano aria from the opera Gianni Schicchi, by Giacomo Puccini and as true as the album concept is, it takes us back to 1918.
Spielberg’s confident approach to the piano and her skills as a master musician have brought us, the grateful musical public, an album we can truly enjoy, explore and revel in, through time, many times over, a real album of great talent and quality!
