“What’s going on growers?” Love it!! Your garden has really produced. It’s just beautiful. Chicken thing is a great idea. They sure are pretty girls. Give Tuck a scratch behind the ears for me. Love your vids. Linda from Texas.
I’m getting chickens for the first time in my life and by watching hundreds of videos learning what they need as babies and when to put them in a coupe and I can’t help but but to think where did the time go and if I was raised like this as a child I would so much better off , just wanted to say thank you again for your teaching videos they mean the world to me and my 4 sons and my granddaughter❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
James I don’t own chickens but my neighbors do and I never chase them out my garden as I know they are helping out with bugs thanks great info as usual. 🇹🇹 love that little tuck
Great episode James. I have bird houses near my garden and the birds take care of hornworms, cabbage worms and other pests. If you do this make sure that you have a bird bath so that the birds get plenty of water and don't attack your plants for water. Especially when it's particularly dry out.
I just love, love, love your videos !!! I learn so much from your ideas. Remember I'm Irene , the lady who tells you that I will give you credit 3 times then I'm stealing your ideas !!!! LOL ! No really, I got hit by the curculio bug too and was going to try those pyramid traps next year, but I think I'll just get me 4 chickens !!! Thanks for sharing James !
A method we employ in our food forest is to place Rocks around the base of various perennials and annuals the chickens gravitate towards. Not only do rocks physically block the chickens from scratching but it also can act as a thermal mass, regulating temperature in the daily cycle and also provide habitat for beneficial critters.
Lovely, James! Your love for all those animals is wonderful to see. Please tell us more about chickens. I want to get a few for scrathing around the stables and in the food forest that is up and coming!
My theory on the homemade compost being better then the bought one could be to the fact that is compost made with the microorganism from the site, giving them an extra boost.
What a great solution! Well done. Maybe you should focus all your annual plants in the new food forest for a year and let the chickens stay in the 7 year for a year. That will ensure you break the curculio cycle real good. Then after that start planting more annuals there again
Yes, your video got me thinking... I started googling about the CURCULIO weevil... Was compelled to help and learn. In an old scientific paper, a gentleman said that when shaking a fruit tree, he caught 5 curculio... Then, when striking a cut branch stub with a Hammer, he collected 200 from the same tree. (make a branch stub at least an inch thick) Chickens and hogs, together appeared to be quite effective for larva removal. -But, you are picking up fruit regularly. Same thing as hogs in a larger orchard. * I wonder if a heavy (chicken scratch-proof) pro weed fabric would help chickens get all larva and pupa... Weed fabric under the top inch or so of chips...? Maybe try One or two trees, next season... mainly closest to the trunk. (I like the sticky tanglefoot trunk idea, too) -Good luck, James! Aloha, -Scotty (on Maui)
Great video James😀...inspiring...I plan on using muskovy ducks in a very similar way in the future...thoughtful observations....are a must....you turned average everyday blank yard into garden of plenty🤙
I would love to see a chicken video. More specifically what plants do you have growing in their run area? I am going to be getting chickens next year and heard they will tear up all plants. What do you have in there that is still growing??
This is so amazing, normally tucky takes half of ur vids lool now it’s taken by chickens LOL cuute !! You always inspire me a lot honestly, always learning new things from u james , i love ur vids and ur way of thinking, plus ur songs , btw what’s the name of it , u play it in ur vids lately and I LOVE IT , i need the name 💕!! Thanks again for always giving us such inspiring words, I’m trying now to build my own small garden , but with no wood chips cuz we don’t hv it in our country so I’m replacing the wood chips with shredded cardboards and papers , i don’t know whether or not it will help keeping the soil moist but I’m definitely not going to give up , I’m going to keep trying, and it’s all thanks to u 😭❤️!! Keep up , we’re always supporting u !!
We lost so much of this common sense knowledge, the last 60 years or so. As a homesteader in the 70's, I let my chickens run loose on the homestead a few hours a day, in the afternoon...when I was outside to keep an eye on them. They did a fantastic job of keeping the fly population down. One time I boobooed......they knew the sweet corn was ripe, before I did, and had to shoo them back to their pen in a hurry. I'm glad to see people like yourself , starting to embrace the whole eco system of a properly managed property, full of abundance.
Hey James, I commented on one of your other videos about using fruit tree Grease. Not sure if you saw that comment but maybe it could be helpful to grease the base of your trees to prevent this Curculio bug.
James, I love your videos! You have inspired me to plant fruit trees next year. I have fig trees in my zone 6 garden and what can I do to keep them alive and fruiting. The fig trees are in the ground. What apple trees do you recommend?
Thanks for telling us about Paul Gautschi, I watched a couple of his videos, he is an inspiration indeed. :) I got to ask "who's playing?" I love the background music but I don't recognize it..??
I used to have chickens but once my new neighbors moved in next door they forced me to get rid of them just because they don't agree with people owning chickens and they made a big deal about it. I miss my chicken's and once I move I hope to own chickens again.
James what is the fellows name that you refer to? Joel? Can you list some references to his writings along with the other gardener you speak of? Thanks candace
I love your content James, but I gotta say, if you leave your chickens in that more than a couple of hours then one is going up those branches and out of your enclosure.
Yo man, great video! I had an idea could it be beneficial to rake the wood chips away from the fruit tree aprior to allowing the chickens to work around it so that you avoid the mixing of chips and topsoil? Let me know if you have tried this and observed any difference. Have a great weekend!
I'd love to get some chickens problem is snakes raccoons feral cats in a few Hawks are constantly patrolling the area I don't think chickens will have a chance
Great observation and idea Patrick! I have thought about ducks, I heard they are very noisy all the time though. So I’m not sure if that would bother the neighbors to much 🤔
Ok so I’m just on the beginning stages of this adventure. I put wood chips down in the spring in part of my backyard. The last two weeks I’ve been putting more chips down in the rest of the yard so hopefully I can plant in the spring. Ok so now the problem.... I have never ever seen so many crickets in my yard in my life 😩. I really don’t like crickets. I don’t want to use chemicals. I mean when I say a lot I can’t even put into words how many😩. Help
You told us once a little about the chickens. You called the black one "Blind Black Chicken". I think you said she was old. You didn't introduce her this time. Maybe next time you could tell us about her. That would be nice.
What is the last name of Bill? I hear you say his name quite often and I'm not familiar with him. I'd like to google him but I'm not sure how to spell his last name.
Ok I also live in NJ and do the BTE garden also I forget the bugs name but the bug looks like a lady bug and are yellow or orange and are related to the stink bug. Well they wipe out my garden or most of it by mid august. Mostly my fault though since my garden runs itself most years I wasnt paying attention and when I finally notice well the battle was over and I lost.
Daniel Fisch- I convinced a friend to challenge his HOA regs against vegetable gardens in the back yard. He spoke to a few neighbors, forced a vote on the issue and won. I'm sure chickens are a harder sell, but your pitch could include a 2 or 4 chicken limit with no roosters, and you might be able to convince enough of your neighbors. I believe there are even pro-backyard chicken groups who have how-to manuals to help people challenge city and HOA regulations. Just like all politics, HOAs are usually run by a vocal minority, but they can be challenged. It doesn't hurt to try.
Allan Turpin I’ll have to try this. I want chickens for many reasons including fertilizing my food forest, scorpion population control and the obvious reasons.
Daniel Fisch- Cool. I don't think HOA procedures are complicated, you just have to look them up ahead of time so you know how to work it. If you get your immediate surrounding neighbors (who would be most likely to be affected by noise, which is minimal, or smell, which isn't a problem for well cared for chickens) to agree ahead of time to a trial run, other people objecting will look like busybodies. If you do get the HOA to agree, be sure to bring your neighbors some eggs and veggies on occasion (but don't promise that ahead of time or it's akin to bribery). Good luck.
I wish he would spend more time with the camera on the chickens instead of on him. I basically watch videos like this for the birds, worms, black soldier fly larvae, or whatever. Things I can’t see here in the city. For instance, that whole cow “mob, mow, move on” section could’ve been filmed with the chickens on screen and him doing the voiceover.
always interesting. who are we and who is us? 3 million chickens we killed during hurricane florence in n. carolina. james your lips are always dry. whooo, fall is coming in quickly at coastal-jersey. show the coop!!!

You will have a blast with them, they are a lot of fun and once you get in the rhythm of taking care of them it’s easy and super rewarding! ❤️
You’re welcome, thanks for your kind words!
I named my new chickens ❤ jersey and Carmelita 🌝⭐️
James I don’t own chickens but my neighbors do and I never chase them out my garden as I know they are helping out with bugs thanks great info as usual. 🇹🇹 love that little tuck
That’s nice you still get some chickens working for ya though 😁
Thanks Ellen, we appreciate the kind words ❤️🐕
Love that jungle you've got going there. It's looking like a forest. Cool!
Definitely more chicken videos. I use them to build my compost and work my garden in the fall.

James, I would really like to see how you take care of your chickens and the process you use for fostering the soil factory.
Great job now that's how you follow nature's benefits with the chickens. Better eggs and better fruits to come.
Thanks for the great videos.
PS: Rebelution was the best concert I’ve ever been to.
Yes please show us how you did ur coop setup, nice video.......magistral, God is so good ❤️🙏🏻
Your videos are always improving and inspiring. Great job, James. Thanks.

I have 5x hens in a small city garden. Fences allow them to be around the plants.
What a great solution! Well done. Maybe you should focus all your annual plants in the new food forest for a year and let the chickens stay in the 7 year for a year. That will ensure you break the curculio cycle real good. Then after that start planting more annuals there again

Great video James😀...inspiring...I plan on using muskovy ducks in a very similar way in the future...thoughtful observations....are a must....you turned average everyday blank yard into garden of plenty🤙
Thanks for the continuously excellent content. Maybe put up some bird boxes to add a predator for the insects?
Love the new crazy graphics! LOL

Beautiful chickens James. What breed are they? The town doesn't give you a hard time about them?
I read about deep litter system and wonder what would happen if I put a really thic leaf mulch in the food forest and let the hens roaming free.
Like always, very instructive , I love your videos . Thanks 😊
Thanks!
Thanks for your generosity and kindness, it means a lot to me and the little boss!

My neighborhoods have chickens??? And im from jersey great video! #shalom
That! Another informative video.

hey James luv your videos. do you ever use plastic grow tunnels to extend growing season?

The Gardening Channel With James Prigioni
James who's your camera person that helps you?
I wish I could borrow some chickens for a few weekends. I am not able to keep them every day.
James, I wish I could have chickens!
What are your laws for chickens in the city?
I'd love to get some chickens problem is snakes raccoons feral cats in a few Hawks are constantly patrolling the area I don't think chickens will have a chance
Have you considered ducks, less destructive in an established food forest than chickens?
Great observation and idea Patrick! I have thought about ducks, I heard they are very noisy all the time though. So I’m not sure if that would bother the neighbors to much 🤔

Crickets wont hurt your garden dont use chemicals. There is nothing scary about them they wont hurt you.
You need some chickens too.
Do chickens eat earthworms too, if so, wouldn't that be a loss?

What was that bug that you mentioned
Plum Curculio 😁

Actually looks more like a cotton boll weevil. I looked it up. The boll weevil does the same thing in it's reproductive cycle.
The bug that got was the Harlequin Bug
