DUCKWORTH Lyrics:
It was always me vs the world
Until I found it's me vs me
Why, why, why, why?
Why, why, why, why?
Just remember, what happens on Earth stays on Earth
We gon' put it in reverse
[Ted Taylor:]
Darling, I told you many times
And I am telling you once again
Just to remind you, sweetheart
That my...
[Kendrick Lamar:]
Oh Lamar, Hail Mary and marijuana, times is hard
Pray with the hooligans, shadows all in the dark
Fellowship with demons and relatives, I'm a star
Life is one funny mothafucka
A true comedian, you gotta love him, you gotta trust him
I might be buggin', infomercials and no sleep
Introverted by my thoughts; children, listen, it gets deep
See, once upon a time inside the Nickerson Garden projects
The object was to process and digest poverty's dialect
Adaptation inevitable: gun violence, crack spot
Federal policies raid buildings and drug professionals
Anthony was the oldest of seven
Well-respected, calm and collected
Laughin' and jokin' made life easier; hard times, Momma on crack
A four-year-old tellin' his nanny he needed her
His family history: pimpin' and bangin'
He was meant to be dangerous
Clocked him a grip and start slangin'
Fifteen, scrapin' up his jeans with quarter pieces
Even got some head from a smoker last weekend
Dodged a policeman, workin' for his big homie
Small-time hustler, graduated to a brick on him
10,000 dollars out of a project housing, that's on the daily
Seen his first mil twenty years old, had a couple of babies
Had a couple of shooters
Caught a murder case, fingerprints on the gun they assumin'
But witnesses couldn't prove it
That was back when he turned his back and they killed his cousin
He beat the case and went back to hustlin'
Bird-shufflin', Anthony rang
The first in the projects with the two-tone Mustang
That 5.0 thing, they say 5-0 came
Circlin' parking lots and parking spots
And hoppin' out while harrassin' the corner blocks
Crooked cops told Anthony he should kick it
He brushed 'em off and walked back to the Kentucky Fried Chicken
See, at this chicken spot
There was a light-skinned nigga that talked a lot
With a curly top and a gap in his teeth
He worked the window, his name was Ducky
He came from the streets, the Robert Taylor Homes
Southside Projects, Chiraq, the Terror Dome
Drove to California with a woman on him and 500 dollars
They had a son, hopin' that he'd see college
Hustlin' on the side with a nine-to-five to freak it
Cadillac Seville, he'd ride his son around on weekends
Three-piece special with his name on the shirt pocket
'Cross the street from the projects, Anthony planned to rob it
Stuck up the place before, back in '84
That's when affiliation was really eight gears of war
So many relatives tellin' us, sellin' us devilish works
Killin' us, crime, intelligent, felonious
Prevalent proposition with 9's
Ducky was well-aware
They robbed the manager and shot a customer last year
He figured he'd get on these niggas' good sides
Free chicken every time Anthony posted in line
Two extra biscuits, Anthony liked him and then let him slide
They didn't kill him; in fact, it look like they're the last to survive
Pay attention, that one decision changed both of they lives
One curse at a time
Reverse the manifest and good karma, and I'll tell you why
You take two strangers and put 'em in random predicaments
Give 'em a soul so they can make their own choices and live with it
Twenty years later, them same strangers, you make 'em meet again
Inside recording studios where they reapin' their benefits
Then you start remindin' them about that chicken incident
Whoever thought the greatest rapper would be from coincidence?
Because if Anthony killed Ducky, Top Dawg could be servin' life
While I grew up without a father and die in a gunfight
[Reversed Audio:]
So, I was takin' a walk the other day…

I can imagine some random animator having fun visualizing this song.
I like how the last words of this album make you sit and say DAMN.
Plz explain me? I want to know what's special about this album. I know everybody says listen to this in reverse order. But i dont get why so?
@@marsh.rapgod So basically, DAMN In reverse order kinda changes the album's story (if you call it that). The album goes from Kendrick living his normal life to DUCKWORTH, where it lists how he could've died if not for Ducky with the 2 piece. In reverse order, Kendrick takes the perspective that his dad did die. Now, he's a gangbanger, and the song lists describes that well. At the end, he gets killed, like what Kendrick claimed would happen. This is a terrible explanation, but DAMN backwards is how Kendrick wanted it to be listened, with the collectors edition even coming with backwards songs.
@@marsh.rapgod Humble is a great pop track and there are a few really good tracks after humble , namely Fear, love, lust, xxx and this one. If you don’t want to read the lyrics just listen to the music if you don’t get why they are good pop music maybe you should read a book instead.
@@marsh.rapgod it was designed to be listened from front to back and back to front. Kendrick said it plays as a full story and an even better rhythm
@@terrance7220 don’t know if your trolling but I’m pretty sure humble and Kendrick’s entire discography is rap and hip hop

You gotta be spiritual to be able to listen to Kendricks music and be able to really feel it... So crazy, this man is gifted. Truly different
I disagree entirely. No faith is needed to be able to “really feel it”
Kendrick is a man of the people, I guarantee he doesn’t care about having to be spiritual to understand his music
@@haerfgvbag7050 I would argue that there is a sense of spirituality while "feeling" music because music has the power to strengthen souls and gives others certain feelings which we have no idea why or how this occurs yk

DAMN DAMN DAMN!! I am from India and when the album came in 2017 I listened to the songs DNA. and HUMBLE. Also at that time,I never went for the lyrics. And now when I have started giving attention to lyrics, the meaning of rap music chnanged for me totally! Honestly this is one of the 'BEST' storytelling songs of all time!! Just thinking about the fact that if that incident would have turned in a different way then we could not have ever witnessed Kendrick's great lyricism gives me chills!! Cuz today if you talk about rap you need to talk about Lamar man!! Idk what rap would have been if there was no Lamar!! Hats Off to KDOT!! LOVE FROM INDIA!! And I just wish more and more could know about this incident that took place between Ducky and Anthony!! The respect for Lamar and TDE. will be on more heights in the hearts of people!! Kendrick The Greatest Storyteller 🔥🔥🔥
I’m convinced Kendrick is too 5 greatest oat. His music production, lyricism, delivery and flow is soooooo good. Surely the best rapper from the 2010’s. People say Kanye, Wayne… but I feel Kendrick is more all rounded. TPAB still top 5 greatest album of all time. Imo, it’s the best album I’ve ever listened to. Fun fact… when I first heard it, I didn’t like it. But now, it’s my fav album ever. Just super well produced.
Most masterpieces take multiple listens to understand. It took me 7 listens of madvillany until it finally clicked. It’s strange how that works.

Wow, amazing song. But listen:
Im a 35yrs old white guy from Brazil. Growing up i didnt have the same access to rap artists from US as most of ya. Who introduced me to the rap world? EMINEM. I took interest in Rap because of him. Through him i discovered DRE and then NWA, Tupac, Biggie, Snoop, Jay, Nas, Andre 300, Wayne, LL cool J, 50, many others and now Kendrick. Thats why, for me, he IS and will always be The GOAT. But i can see that Kendrick Lamar is an amazing rapper, lyricist and storyteller, and how he could be in someone's top 5. Maybe in, i dont know, 15 years, if he proofs that he can stay as relevant as Em still is, maybe then i could change my mind. Until then, the highest-selling Rap artist in history and one of the highest in ANY genre, the 15-time Grammy winner, one of the 7 rap artist/group ever inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is the GOAT. Marshall Mathers aka Slim Shady aka EMINEM.

I really don't understand this song not gonna lie but knowing kendrick it's probably got so much meaning. I really wish i did understand😭
The jist of it is that it's a story about Kenny's producer/label Top Dawg ent who used to stick up the local KFC where Kendricks dad used to work at.
