  • This week on This and That, Sandra Bezic joins us to break down 2019 European Championships, Javier Fernandez's Revolution on Ice, Kim Yuna's return to the ice, Evgenia Medvedeva and the brilliance of Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron and Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres. Figure skaters from Europe battled it out in Minsk for medals and trips to the upcoming 2019 World Figure Skating Championships. Alina Zagitova, Sofia Samodurova and Svetlana Konstantinova skated against each other and the future performances of Elizaveta Tuktamysheva and Evgenia Medvedeva at the upcoming Russian Cup. Minsk was full of high drama and quality skating.

    Also, I love watching a show where one host makes the specific comment "I was in an opera once that had an aria about how grey and ugly Minsk is" and the other host reacts with a look of pure outrage. This is not an exchange that one can find anywhere else in the world and I'm so glad to have our TSL community restored. :-)

    I think Samodurova should be guaranteed a spot for Worlds. She’s earned her keep for the season and won the European title fair and square. It would be sad if that upcoming competition does not go well for her and she misses what would likely be her only chance to go to Worlds. I fear that she has an unfair advantage of being the “no one” of the group and how that would reflect on the judging. I know that this is the way that the system works, but I sure hope she is able to at least compete at Worlds.

    • @vncntd3962
      @vncntd3962 5 років тому +5

      I don't think there is any question that Samodurova is going to keep her spot for Worlds. It's Konstantinova who is in trouble - depending on a number of factors, including the fitness of Medvedeva and Tuktamysheva. It's unlikely that the Russian Federation will decide to send both Medvedeva and Tuktamysheva, but likely that (if they both show willing) one will get the green light. Konstantinova might still get a spot if Zagitova pulls out though (which she probably won't, even though there are good reasons to do so).

    • @olgaavdeeva8216
      @olgaavdeeva8216 5 років тому +9

      She'll go for sure. Russia needs those 3 spots and solid consistent Sofia is a lock for top 5-6. Three Japanese and Russians will be top 6 I guess, if they go more or less clean. If somebody falls apart Americans can get in the mix. Zagitova and Sofia are a lock if no injuries hit them, Medvedeva and Tuktamysheva will fight for the 3d spot. I hope it'll be Liza. She had a brillant GP series, I'd love to see her at Worlds.

      chima chibi my point being that people who are religiously inclined are forgoing traditional religion and declaring themselves atheist very frequently these days. Traditional religion and atheism while seemingly opposite have one major thing in common, they both require faith. One a faith in everything, the other in nothing. Western media has convinced the type of person that needs religion that Christianity is bad. These people with no socially acceptable outlet for faith turn to atheism amongst other idols

    I totally agree with Sandra and co. that Aymoz's FS was far more dynamic and artistically interesting than Rizzo's. Aymoz was really done in though by his failed quad toeloop for which he only earned 4.75 points total compared to Rizzo who earned 12.49 points for the same jump. This 8 point difference alone covers the discrepancy in their final FS scores: Rizzo beat Aymoz in the FD by 7.35 points. Aymoz also received a -1.00 deduction in the FS and this played a decisive role in his 4th place finish since he lost to Rizzo by only .74 points.

    For the first time, I totally agree with most of what you all were saying! (Things I can't even get some of my friends who enjoy figure-skating to understand: high praise for Gabriella and Guillaume, and the need to watch their programs over and over, and how their programs are deeply-layered and not "flashy/made to television", as I feel about both Russian teams, especially Bukin/Stepanova -- which I found boring -- and Katsalapov, who I don't think has excellent skating skills, etc.) I'm so glad you also liked Kevin Aymoz: for me, he was the revelation of the Europeans, and I thought both of his programs were so exciting and different, and he gets "inside" his music in the most beautiful way.....Did Guillaume do choreography for him, also? I also feel that in ice-dance duos, often the women are too tall for the men (I can mention four off the top of my head), which makes the lifts looks labored....and I know they sometimes search for a long time to find the right partner, but if they physically match up, it's not very appealing, in my opinion, to the audience. Where I differ is that I think Kolyada (who has amazing presence and superb skill, when he's "on") needs a different coach, different music, and much better choreography. Look at how much Vanessa and Morgan improved when they went to train with John Zimmerman and his team (and I think Kevin Aymoz is also working with John/Sylvia). Kolyada could be in the very highest echelon, but he needs to have better music picked for him (or he should pick it), and he definitely needs more mature, sophisticated choreography. I still think Nathan Chen needs to improve his posture (he skates with his shoulders hunched over)......But, to my surprise, I agree with much of what you all said. I'm really glad you all appreciate Gabriella and Guillaume (whom I think are so special, and I've watched all their programs since 2014 and marveled at their growth, while all the 'media' kept saying, 'but they're doing exactly the same thing': no, they're not! And they're upping their skill and artistry every year. And thank you for understanding (and praising) the uniqueness and commitment and 'honesty' and increasing artistry of Vanessa and Morgan. I love their style (and I've heard them talk a lot about how they want to stay true to themselves and improve at the same time). And the reason Vanessa and Morgan have improved so much this season in terms of unusual transitions, etc. is that both of their programs were choreographed by some of the best ice-dancers in the world: Guillaume for the SP and Charlie White for the LP -- and Guillaume especially really shook up/changed around the way they usually did transitions, entered into and out of lifts and jumps, etc. Bottom line: I'm a long-time musician and, while I appreciate skilled technique, if music played doesn't have phrasing and soul, it just comes off as boring and cold.

    BELIEVED OPINION : "If we're talking about Zagitova I see a different problem. She doesn't deal with nerves and that is why she is inconsistent. Try to put yourself in her situation: you are an olympic champion so everybody expect from you a lot, you defeated the russian's favourite skater Medvedeva so they expect even more, you know that next year "the quadsquad" is comming so it will be hard to even get a spot for international competiton, your body is grownig so you have to relearn many things. And don't forget your mom and dad are living far away from you.
    I've seen every Alina's training in Minsk and I also felt bad for her when Eteri was screaming at her and I was crying with her. But look at the first training when she was only with Dudakov - focused and no stress - clean skating, program looked so improved I really wanted her to skate in that way at the competition. But after I saw coaches screaming next day I knew it won't give her confidence.
    And you're right - she is hardworking girl, many skaters has said it about her so I wish Eteri would never again "give her a courage" the way she did that day.
    I hope that all those toys she got from the people will make her aware that she has many supportes and they wish her long career and she doesn't need to stressout.
    "

      Inga Bulgar she has lived far from her parents since she was.. 11? Even then she lived with her babushka in Moscow. I don’t think that’s a valid excuse. Everything else sounds fair enough. I wonder if Alina secretly wishes she had Evgenia’s courage to switch coaches; she has to at least have a shred of understanding why Evgenia left.

    Sandra’s interview and commentary was such a joy. So many amazing stories, with wise advice and very understanding of all of the skaters she has worked with. Amazing!
    • Her entire experience with RevOnIce really makes me wish I had been able to go watch or have been able to see it. It sounds like it was truly an amazing show, with an amazing and diverse cast of performers.
    • I really loved to hear about Yuna, and how hopefully she IS learning to love skating again, and is doing better now that there isn’t as much pressure on her, but that she is taking it in her own time.
    • Also loved hearing her experiences with Evgenia, and what she would have loved to see happen, but also how much Sandra respects and cares for Evgenia. Especially since she said something that not many have - What it would have been to have Evgenia take a year off, and if she had been able to come back next season. It would have been very interesting, but I also hope that Russian Nats helped reignite her fire, and that she will use this time off wisely to care for herself and think for how SHE wants to pursue her career.
    • wow, just WOW. Javier really is special. And I almost got tears eyed thinking of Javier becoming a coach and raising the next gen of Spanish skaters. 😭💖
    • Sandra also made a great comparison that I had never really considered before. Everyone always compares Nathan to Yuzu, but honestly in their style and the type of skaters and the type of performers, Javier is a much better comparison. (Even though I absolutely hate direct comparisons, it’s by far the best I’ve heard ever in regards to these top men.)
    But seriously, thank you so much for having Sandra on here, a real great interview, discussion, and welcome back

    Welcome back, and a big yes to Gabby's new tango costume....was Sandra's burgendy turtleneck a nod to Guillame's free costume? Loved Jonathon and Sandra gushing over them (and I'm really here for the pairs).

    I'm so happy you're back! I was so sad this past week watching Europeans, because I really wanted to get your opinion on it. I'm one of those people who really only saw skating during the Olympics, however this past year I've really tried to stay committed to keeping up with the sport. I credit you and your channel for helping me stay interested and up to date with everything, especially considering I don't know a lot of the technical aspects. It helps being able to hear better insight than what I know. I was thrilled when I saw this video pop up and I'm both glad and relieved to know you guys are back!

      Kate Douthat I feel the same. I hadn’t seriously watched skating since the early 2000’s. The Olympics pulled me back in and TSL has helped me learn so much.

    Alina is so great and consistent in practice. They need to do something. I feel like they don't do a lot of run-throughs, I guess its her stamina that lets her down. Why don't they take away some transitions, simplify the program. NOBODY rewards that and it's too risky.

      @yunilius7193 5 років тому

      What do you mean, her PCS saved her when her jumps failed her, though I agree they can simplify the program a bit. We don't need a super rushed program everytime.

    Welcome back, guys! Thank you for another great video on the skating competitions. Watching Javier Fernandez get his seventh medal made me both happy and sad; while I'm glad he got his much deserved 7th gold, I feel sad that he will no longer be competing. Watching this video of yours for the second time, with Sandra Bezic, about Javi and how wonderful he is made my two nights. It really was a surprise that Queen Yuna was on Revolution on Ice, Javi's show. Hopefully, she'll be on more ice shows and even go back to next year's Revolution On Ice. I'm happy for Vanessa and Morgan - they finally got a gold medal at Euros. They deserve it, their programs are excellent.
    Was surprised at the skaters Matteo Rizzo and Kevin Aymoz. It looks like they could be real threats next year at Euros. I hoped that Alexia Paganini would have medalled, but was pleasantly surprised by Viveca Lindfors. The Russian skaters may not be so dominant this next quadrennial. I felt sorry for Mikhail Kolyada - everyone expects him to be able to go up against the likes of Javier Fernandez and Yuzuru Hanyu, but he ends up doing not so well in the free program. I hope he can take care of himself and get better in the upcoming competitions.
    I'm not sure what to make of the John Coughlin issue, but Dave, don't stop what you're doing. Fans like me need you!
