I began watching this vlog during the pandemic, and its calmness and interesting topic meant a lot to me at that time. Thanks for being there during that time and providing a well-needed diversion. It now brings back good memories during a somewhat uncertain time.
Gosh David, I can now put a face to the name at Rugby Boats, we were just missing The Commodore on your vlog!! A very interesting vlog, as always, thank you so much.
Do and would love this life style. Watching "you tubers" on the cut, show such pretty scenery, slower lifestyle looks enchanting, but I enjoy to watch from my trusty sofa. Very interesting informative vlog. ❤
Thank you so much for balanced interview and questions regarding the state of the market for boats. I was shocked to hear of the insurance difficulties for my friends in the USA, should they decide to invest. I loved the last boat's interior - from Buckingham Palace, no less. By the way, with regard to the outrow - that is THE most energetic dog I have ever seen! Oh, and may you and the many CTC viewers have a splendid Christmas/Holiday Season!🛥🎄
Thanks for this. I’m ever curious about the economics and practicalities of boat ownership in other parts of the world. Looks like middle price is the planning factor. By the time one fixed up the low price point one, you’d be in striking distance of the middle range. The insights about foreign ownership were most useful.
Fascinating. Esp how the market has changed over time. And how folks are still looking for a ‘cheap’ house alternative. Mooring availability and cost has to also be factored in. Thanks. C&Lx
Brilliant. Love Rugby Boats. Best walk round videos you can get. If I do end up buying then they’re the first port of call. Brilliant. Interesting vlog David. Best wishes
Boats are overpriced with depreciation inevitable. People started thinking of these as houses instead of like a car. They rust like a car, much quickers if you don't look after them a lot of people are going to be disapointed when they go to sell. The bubble has burst especially with the CRT rises in Licence fees which are going to double in the next few years. It no longer is a cheap option for housing if that's why you are looking for one. You spend now 150k on a boat and then come to sell ten years later do you think your boat will rise in price like housing? PS; Forgot to say David fascniating and well made vlog lol :)
It’s really fascinating to think about homes appreciating and depreciating in value. I sometimes think it’s the location that appreciates or depreciates in value and not the actual home itself. When the neighborhood goes down in value so does the house. When you buy a car, house boat or RV you’re just buying the thing.
I’m likely never going to buy a narrowboat, but I would absolutely want the living space at the back and the bed in the bow. I would want the galley and the living at the rear so the person at the tiller could still interact with those inside and I don’t want to have to crawl through the bedroom to get a cup of coffee.
Great video as always. I’d love for you to do a deeper dive on the lower end of the market. Plenty of people looking for a boat with a budget under 25k for reasons mentioned in this video. Not as much quality info about showing what you really get (or don’t!) for that money in 2024/5 as there is for the mid-high end of the market on UA-cam
Excellent. Rugby and James seem tops. Pynots(magpies) & Sixpense: 35K£, 48', 10yr old engine!!!, 2 side hatches, big windows, clean layout - if I had been in the market I would have bought it in a heartbeat from James. Perfect for 2-3yrs year round living, marina and cruising. Gawd I would have been happy!!!!! No interest in the other 2 but they have their place in the market. Interesting about US and insurance. I'll have to move to UK. No problem! Very nicely done! 🤩
@@CruisingTheCut Darn it David , you do a really good interview, and you pick your targets super well. Now I know Rugby and James! 90% of the battle!!!

Hi David! Great video. You are a good interviewer. One day I would like to have a Narrowboat holiday on a hire boat but that looks increasingly less feasible as time goes on.
Thank you for another great video. Guess your vids are the only ones where you can watch the thumb-counter rollin every 2 to 5 seconds. No wonder. You give us alltimes a good time. Especially with this "how much is a boat these days?" It´s a very good idea to produce every for or five years a new vid about this, cause things do change quick. Thank you an have a good time.
I thoroughly enjoyed this very informative video David, and thanks to James for being so forthright with his answers. It is somewhat comforting to know I still can't afford one.
They should hire you to make sales videos! I live in the middle of America, and I was ready to get out my checkbook. Joking aside, I found this very interesting.
It's all about what one likes. I've seen narrow boats for sale that I liked much better than the $108k boat, for less money. I'm glad the interest is still high. Cheers.

Can easily imagine the awkward moments, knock knock - "Ahem, I just need to slip through, hope you don't mind". But, I DO mind, I am currently busy in here!" No...Thank... You... And, it seems the main reason Baleine is two to three times the price of comps stems from the provenance of all that (sorry) dark and dingy looking lumber. Agree with David, the somber effect can easily be remedied with a "tin of paint".
Baleine was a fascinating study from a design/decoration point of view and very quirky.I have noticed especially from Waterways World reviews that the higher the price the more likely it has a walkthrough bathroom/loo.There doesn't seem to be any privacy with them and I personally hate them .There also seem to be a large number of brand new boats with walkthroughs.Well done David for a really good review of the current boat market.
I would have loved to ask James if there was a noticeable uptick in Narrowboat sales as David's channel took off and became popular. The canals certainly seem busier now than before he started CruisingTheCut, there definitely have been a proliferation of UA-cam channels hopping on board, following his example.
I am surprised by the narrow 3% asking pricing/selling price margin quoted in the video, it would be interesting to see how much that margin has increased post the boom-plateau era - say in the last year. I also suspect the 3% margin is relative to the asking price at the time of offer and not the orginal asking price when a vessel is first placed on the market prior to subsequent downward asking price revisions. Nice to see Mr Rugby Sales in the flesh so to speak, rather than The Voice of walk throughts.
I thought of you when I started watching that Travelling Man series from 1984. I was so eager to see the next episode, I bought the DVD set. It's on Talking Pictures TV, tonight at 8pm.
Like cars and boats and even homes. You do not need a broker. You need a survey or mechanical inspection and negotiate the broker commission out of the deal. I have bought and sold 3 homes in America without an agent with no troubles. If you see a house or a boat you want advise them to fire the agent and negotiate the deal privately. The Xmas card and fruit basket at Xmas isn’t worth the cost.
I think he got it wrong he said £30.000 to move straight on live aboard no money to spend that first boat if I got that I'd have to spend a load money to make comfortable enough to live on
Planning a trip right now for 2026 from the U.S. to come over and rent a narrowboat for a few weeks. Your questions at the end about the state of the canal because the CRT(I'm guessing that's an acronym for Canal (?) Trust and their lack of upkeep piqued my interest because I haven't seen a lot of discussion about that on the youtube channels I follow about narrowboating. I'd be supremely interested if that's a valid deterrent to me coming, or if it's more a complaint for people that live on their boats and have to deal with it year round. Great video as always.
😂😂😂😂😂 Problem might be that a lot of boats claim to have timber ex Buckingham Palace so much so that the Palace would have to have been ten times the size, if you follow ... Bit like having a piece of the original Cross ...

Thanks David for another interesting vlog of the cut. I have subscribed to Slim Potatohead 5 years ago, I understand you met for a pint recently, will we see a video of your meeting soon?
Here the USA. A cabin cruiser goes for a million five and up. And where I live at an average house $300,000 but towards the Boston metro area. Houses and boats can go for 10 million and up. And you get what you paid for. I would look at it as an investment. If I had the extra money. And do all the canals of England. France and Germany. And if it's seaworthy travel from England to the Saint Lawrence River in to Montreal then in Toronto. Then on to Chicago travel to mighty Mississippi. All the way to New Orleans depending on the season though too. Because you can't travel down in Mississippi when it's flooding and because of the snags. But it will be one heck of a trip.
How do you see the canal network holding up over the next few decades? Watching your videos from "the far side" of the ocean it almost seems like a lot of the restoration and repair is taken care of more by local volunteer groups (labor and financing) than by the CRT.
I had one and I would leave it either at a relative's house or at a marina (with permission!) when I went off cruising for any length of time. I didn't try to bring the car along though some people do by cycling back to it.
so are you suggesting the guys that own Rugby boats, who specialise in selling boats don’t know how to look behind some panelling to see what insulation was used 🤔 sounds more like they know its not very good and hope the boat sells to someone not so clued up and doesn’t get a mention
You know you’re getting old when you look at the top priced boat and think. Where’s the comfort in that lounge? I wouldn’t sit on that chair in the middle of a walkway and think gosh I’m really set up here. I want a comfy couch, good sized armchairs and not sit a few feet from a tv in a sorry rather ghastly wooden cabinet, in direct draught from the door which has no double glazing I suspect. Oh dear where are those days of thinking of nothing but the adventure on offer?
Yes, well, suggest you visit a brokerage to see many more boats before taking a view. Be aware too that some brokerages specialise in lower end boats and might be a lot more flexible in price. Higher end brokerages tend to be more conservative in whom they entertain ... it's not unknown for people to spend an afternoon simply looking at boats they have no intention of buying, ever. It's like a free day out so to speak.
The state of the canals have deteriorated and to say they are moaning isn't a welcome comment but that's your view this country is on its knees controversial mmm no vandalism and lack of maintenance all real thanks
I ask myself the question, all we have seen is rather traditional wood work, but are there also narrow boats with a super modern interieur 21 century design look?
@@CruisingTheCut thanks for the link, and indeed these come a whit the most modern necessities, but perhaps you find my way thinking rather od, I still find those to classic, in the sense that there is always wood grains and classical trimmed lines in the doors. Although there were some plane grey colored door, but stil there are these traditional trim lines instead of just plane doors with hidden hitches and handels and again always fished with a visible wood grains.
Loved the vlog and we need these every three months. I have watched the market closely for 8 years and I disagree. It’s the boats in the 50 to 80 k bracket that Are causing the block as they are over priced. Most of the boats I see need to come down 20 k. Wide beam is a whole world of pain. Keep the vlogs coming David.

Good to see that evil depreciation affects narrow boats. In the US depreciation is devastating, especially for new RVs. RV=caravan.

I'm interested in how available are permanent moorings? With parking?
Depends if you mean leisure moorings or (official) residential ones. See cruisingthecut.co.uk/2024/01/23/canal-boat-mooring-costs/
Im on their mailing list and my plan is to sell my house in the next 2 years, retire and move onto a boat.
Does the insurance need to be from a UK based company?
The state of the canals have deteriorated and to say they are moaning isn't a welcome comment but that's your view this country is on its knees controversial mmm no vandalism and lack of maintenance all real thanks
I ask myself the question, all we have seen is rather traditional wood work, but are there also narrow boats with a super modern interieur 21 century design look?
Have a look at this video

More to come
Cool….depreciation must be a killer out there David. I am inundated with boats for sale
Really ? Well that's good news
