  • Thanks to recent news and some great videos leading people into amateur radio by our friends at @fieldcraftsurvival among others. My inbox has been packed with people asking how to get started and what they need to buy to get themselves, friends and families prepared with better radio communication. Tonight we're going to deep-dive one such email and build upon the communications some of you may have starting out with radio.

Best livestream of yours I've watched, very straightforward, practical, realistic knowledge dropped in a non-condescending and informative way. Thanks!

Fantastic video. Will pass it on to some of the people who were in my technician class. For us new hams watching you operating the equipment is nice.

Great video. Excellent topic. First point has always got to be "Does my audience care enough about what I want them to learn, and if not, how can I plus up my own capabilities to rescue them when the time comes". +1 to prior comment that said this was an excellent example of leading a horse to water and trying to make it drink.
Also, how do people not understand the time value of money?

I think this is one of your most useful episodes. Honest opinion, useful informational URLs and the live demo at the end. I had the same idea as Jason but gave up; my family just isn't interested in learning and not knowing makes it all useless.

For one-way communication (which it sounds like is his major concern), don't forget about the radiogram. If the disaster is confined to a specific area, radiograms can get to someone outside the disaster area with phone service who can then deliver it the rest of the way.

FAMILY SKILL PROBLEM: Same for my FAM. They don't see the utility until it's too late. Kept telling FAM they needed emergency food. COVID hit and the grocery stores were a mess... Yeah, I helped them from my supplies... GMRS seems the best, but I doubt they'll learn that; cell phones better [lol.] All of this sucks; a horse can be led to water, but making it drink.... Thanks for the vid. Can't fix stupid.

Great video - a much needed reality check for me. Thanks for covering the topic so well and for the demo at the end. It proved your points perfectly.

Something that I think would have been good to note. He could set up Winlink to send and receive email from his family, even if they don't do radio.

in loss of power situation, some repeaters could lose power, or have limited power backup time.

Jason's question reminds me of questions I get about guns, especially when people ask what gun would be good for a wife or girlfriend (don't arm them both!). It's usually something like "Can you recommend a gun that's the size of a derringer, has the recoil of a .22 LR, the magazine capacity of a Tommy gun, and the stopping power of a GAU-8?" Uh... get 'em a can of pepper spray?

That's tons of info today, Josh. I don't think we have as much available down here, but I'll be looking to see what's available for us downunder.

My wife is a licensed ham, and there is a radio in the car. Even with that, there is a limited likelihood that she would use the radio or know what freq to use.

  • @chublez
    @chublez 5 місяців тому +1

This can't be overstated. If they won't license you'll never make contact. It took almost a year to make JS8 contact with my buddy who was interested enough to license. Getting that 10m vertical up and a radio on the desk and software installed all took him a bit and he WANTED to do it. Not as bad as some of us obviously but still, someone who's blatantly said nope not interested. Buddy save yer $3000 for yourself and get ya some nice toys yer just throwing it away on this.

It may be time to do an honest review of Quansheng UV-K5. Not the best HT, but maybe the best buy for a prepper or non-ham.

Cool vid, Josh. Finally subbed after countless hours watching your content. Just goes to show what I've always said, radio comms preparedness is only going to be effective with other people who are really into radio comms preparedness (and preferably live within a few miles). Our boy Jason is in cloud cuckooland (with all the best intentions that he has). He mentions that no-one is going to get their tech license. Well, if he's thinking HF, they'd need their General (not that the General is particularly tough, I aced tech and General in one sitting but... I do have 40 years in engineering fields including electronics and comms. For others, I'm sure it'd be tougher). But that's 2 tests and some expensive gear. 40:00 doing a video with you monkeys ? RUDE ! hahaha

You would be better off finding a ham in the area of your family and having them copy and relay messages to your family.

I think it’s a lot to assume a ham would do that during a disaster.

Granted I’m 45 mins into this video (I.E. not done) But while I respect some of the questions, and agree there are too many damn acronyms in Ham radio that you may have to stop 6 times in a sentence to go look things up in the beginning, this is an instance of someone not willing to “do” or learn. They want you to take all of YOUR TIME to make detailed instructions, lists of every single required part or piece (with Amazon links!) while they sit on their hands. I’m all for helping people, but this person is looking for something that really doesn’t exist. Everything is a trade off in radio, in one way or another. At least some basic minimal effort and technical skill or knowledge is required. I’d tell this guy to get a group plan on sat phones and send them out, or maybe one person at these far flung locations would put in the effort to learn some things to help themselves. I have zero respect for people who won’t do anything to help themselves. I wish them good luck in the tough times that are almost certainly ahead of us.
