    Thank you! This is very helpful! I use Apple photos for my current photos since I got an iPhone, but I also have a pretty large photo library of photos arranged in a similarly organized folder hierarchy that was created in Mac Finder from before I had an iPhone. Should I export the photos in Apple to folders or import the photos in folders into Apple Photos?

      Hi there! I prefer to keep my photos in folders so I export the photos to folders on my computer by month. Then I delete all the stuff I don’t consider worthy of saving for the family. Lastly, I upload to albums in forever.com. I keep my photos on my phone just for the added backup. Hope this makes sense!!
      Cheers!

    Hello from California. I am quite pleased to have discovered your photo management UA-cam videos. I am looking for some guidance. My situation is --- I have an iMac and have never really used Apple Photos before. Right now it shows photos from my iPhone that are in iCloud. But, all of my thousands of photos over the past 50 years are stored on an external hard drive in file folders. I am also in the HUGE process of scanning and digitizing old 35mm slides and negatives from the days before digital cameras. What puzzles me is how to have Apple Photos work with all of the photos on the external hard drive. I don't understand what Apple Photos does with the images --- I am assuming I import the images to Apple Photos and then Apple Photos becomes the new repository of original photos and then I delete all of the originals on the external hard drive? I don't want to be creating duplicate photos. I also want to be able to edit my photos in other editing apps, like Pixelmator Pro and Luminar Neo. So, I am wrestling with how to proceed. Do you offer one-on-one training on this subject? Thank you.

      Hi Walter - Thank you so much for watching! You are correct that you would be importing the photos into Apple Photos and would manage them from there. Backing up the library to an external hard drive and iCloud. But, you would not be able to edit them outside of Apple Photos.
      I have a Mac and I keep my photos in Folders on my computer, backed up to an EHD and with iDrive. The photos in my Apple Photos are my current pictures on my iPhone including tons of photos for information, etc. that I don't need in my family collection.
      Here's the video to watch for our system on teaching how to manage photos if you haven't seen it already: ua-cam.com/users/livee58WlgnAFTM?si=9oopymvX61Ve2qvZ
      Unfortunately, I don't offer one-on-one training as time is limited. I do have a community with monthly virtual workshops where people can work on their photos for a period of time and I'm there to answer questions throughout. Here's a link to learn more: www.thepixplan.com
      Thank you so much for watching!

      Thank you so much for your welcome reply. I have found the Extensions feature in the Edit mode for a picture in Apple Photos that allows you to use external photo editors that you have installed on your computer. I am thinking of having my archive of "Original" images on my external drive and create a new (additional) Photos library that loads with all of the original files. And I will have the additional Photos Library located on the external drive as well, to keep from overloading my iMac. Then have a standalone backup routine for that external drive. So, hopefully I can view and edit all of my images in the new Library. The original Photos Library that exists will remain as is, being the repository of all images on my iPhone. I will periodically download all iPhone images for storing in the external "Originals" drive (and Photos Library). I think this will work. Thanks again for your input. Learning as I go. 😃

      Hi Walter - totally missed this reply. I am sorry! Hoping you've made some progress. How is this system working for you? Or did you modify your workflow yet?

    I have both an Apple Computer and APC. I have scanned all of my photos in through the PC with the Epson 680 and also with the Doxie hand scan. I actually started scanning all of my pictures and papers over 10 years ago and so many of them are all on my external hard drive.

    • @Pixologie

      Marva, do you then import your scanned photos into Apple Photos? Just curious! I use both a Mac and a PC also… I also have to check out the Doxie hand scan… hadn’t heard of that before! Way to go on continuing to save your photos! Cheers again!

      @@Pixologie I have not made it that far yet. So far I have just loaded the software for Epson on my PC and I also have downloaded the Doxie scans to the PC. I do like the Doxie. I originally scanned everything I had well over 10 years ago with a hand scanner which is very similar to the Doxie. I kept them all in folders on my external hard drive and computer. But I decided to start over again. Not only did I scan them into the Epson but also with the Doxie. Overkill. But I was also very guilty of always having at least three or four extra external hard drives that all had the same data on it. I was determined I’m not gonna lose everything in one fell swoop. Pictures of the most important thing to me.
      So, I have not imported this into my Apple photos yet. The Doxy has software but then you’re able to save everything into a file folder on your PC/Apple. I just finished today scanning everything I had in preservative boxes. I did file a fair amount of pictures into various folders so as not to lose track of them. I am still in process trying to figure out my next step.

    Have you done a review comparing Mylio & Apple Photos? If all my grandkids are Apple users and my main goal is sharing with them, would you just stick to Apple Photos?

      Hi Westie Mom! Yes, I did do a video on this: ua-cam.com/video/7_mLb8nicU4/v-deo.html
      And, I am so sorry for the delay in reply. . . There are several reasons why I like Mylio better than Apple. However, I do use Apple Photos and Mylio - with the bulk of my work in Mylio.
      Would you be interested in joining me on a Zoom Call? I continue to do research into the challenges consumers face with their photo collections and would love to talk with you.

    How do I avoid importing duplicates from my iPhone? I don’t sync my phone to my Mac because
    I only want certain pics stored on my Mac. I can’t seem to find a feature that tells me an album already has certain photos in it.

      Hi Christine, when you connect you phone, I think you can have Photos review what you are importing. . . but I need to check on this. . . stay tuned and I'll test it tomorrow and get back to you.

    Do you delete photos in Apple photos or just keep all and use memories and favorites?

    • @Pixologie
      @Pixologie 2 роки тому

      Hi there - I actually store photos in Apple. . . the memories are prompts by Apple to view pictures in your collections. . . Favorites are photos you have added a heart to - helps you see all of your favorites at once in the album view.
      Again, happy to talk with you if you like!

      Do you keep all of the photos you are not using. I delete duplicates, but how many photos do you keep that you will never use. I was told why bother to go through and delete unused photos since I have iCloud.

    • @Pixologie
      @Pixologie 2 роки тому

      Patricia, are you talking about family photos or work photos? I do keep many family photos that I won’t use in a photo book or slideshow… but I might someday change my mind. Work photos I don’t know if I’ll use or not so I keep them. You don’t have to delete pictures at all… If you have all the space you want an iCloud. And the iCloud storage is cheap to purchase more. I hope this helps!
      Cheers!
