Bronisław Kaper (often mistakenly called Bronislau) was a polish born composer who made a successful career as Hollywood composer and is best remembered for his bombastic Mutiny On The Bounty score. Beside his talents as composer for film and concert music he was known as songwriter of popular songs for such as "Invitation", as well.
Lord Jim is a fine example for his skills as a film composer.
More of this rarely talked about person to come, for sure!
    Until then... Enjoy!

    "He made many voyages.
He knew the magic monotony of existence between sky and water: he had to bear the criticism of men, the exactions of the sea, and the prosaic severity of the daily task that gives bread - but whose only reward is in the perfect love of the work.
    This reward eluded him.
Yet he could not go back because there is nothing more enticing, disenchanting and enslaving then life at sea."
    From LORD JIM
    by Joseph Conrad.

I absolutely loved Peter O'Toole, and not just because of me Irish ancestral line. Fred, I just wanted to thank you for posting all these magnificent soundtracks from the best time of what Hollywood had to offer, the 1930s to the middle of the 1970s. Yes. I was too young to go see this -- lol, although my mom took me when I was 6 and my older siblings to the L.A. Fox to see the opening of Lawrence of Arabia (scary but fascinating), I just do not care for movies past that time period. Also have read Peter's books - fascinating life. They just don't make anything worth watching anymore, Fred, but what huge diamonds THESE films are. Thank you and God bless you.

I saw Lawrence in the theatre in 1962, I was 10, and Jim in 1965 age 13, both indelibly impressed on my memory.

Kaper was underrated in Hollywood. His themes for the 60s tv show "The FBI" were brilliant.

Try "Tintagel" by Arnold Bax. If you liked this you just might like Bax too.

One of my favorite films! Didn’t do well, I never knew why. Another knockout performance by O’Toole, excellent supporting cast including James Mason, Paul Lukas, Curt Jürgens, Eli Wallach, and Jack Hawkins.

Actually O'Toole was too old for that part. Jim is supposed to be a very young man, probably early 20s, hence all that fantasizing about being a hero etc.

Beautiful score for a shallow potboiler of a melodrama, not to be confused with the novel.

A composer from the Golden Era in filmmusic aka classic music written for the film

  • @roward48
    @roward48 9 місяців тому

You mentioned concert music. I have never heard that Kaper wrote for the concert hall. Do you have any info on any of those works?
He is a generally underrated film composer, but he was quite skilled, if not quite up to the level of brilliance of Miklos Rozsa. They both worked at MGM during the 50's. In fact, Rozsa conducted one of Kaper's scores for the soundtrack. I forget which one, but FSM released it on cd.

Looks as though that here's another somewhat "classic of the 1960's" that I have not seen in its entirety, yet.
Peter O'Toole, along with James Mason & James Hawkins makes a good combination of talented, well speaking English actors. O'Toole is one of my "top ten all-time favorite" Brits that really knew how to speak "the King's language" well. (Richard Burton is another)
I seemed to have forget that this was one of those, more or less, "required books" in high school English courses to read. Why...I don't know. At least in my school, I don't remember the teachers saying: "Read Lord Jim. Book reports in three weeks."
This music score is somewhat reminiscent of other 1950's & '60's "stirring music scores"...a few that O'Toole was in.
    Fred...you did well, again.
Oh...have you done (if it's available) the one from "Captains of the Clouds" (1942) that starred: James Cagney, Dennis Morgan, Alan Hale, Sr., George Tobias, and Brenda Marshall? I've seen the movie years ago on T.C.M. and saw it again yesterday (11-4-17) I like the score. Max Steiner was the composer.

Hllo Tom, Captains of the Clouds was unfortunately never ever released on any format.

Spannende Interpretation dieses fein komponierten Meisterwerks mit gut phrasierten Töne aller Instrumente im inspirierenden Tempo. Dieses lyrische Werk soll viel häufiger angehört und viel höher geschätzt werden!

Hi, Fred. I don't know if you're aware of it, but The Girl from Patusan and The Color of Love are missing the first few bars. I absolutely love those two tracks. I have an old LP of the soundtrack, but even after trying to clean up the sound quality, there are still snaps, crackles, and pops. Your recording is AMAZING! It sounds as if Mr. Kaper scored it yesterday! I was wondering if you could somehow upload those two songs separately. I have been looking for this soundtrack for YEARS. I would soooo appreciate it! Regardless, thanks for uploading this OST recording!

I remember when I saw this film that the opening tune after Hawkins's "never was so damned as" reminded me of Mahler, of the first 'night music' of his seventh symphony. The makers of the Castrol GTX adverts were more literal, and it IS in the original TV Star Trek theme. However, James Horner seemed to have taken the theme from this film for "Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan" then adorned it with superfluous flatulent horn calls, and no thematic development. Listening to this, you can hear how much more film composers could give, did give, to the understanding and 'life' of the film's story and characters. Does any one have the ability to do this anymore ?

both scores are very welcome! I was afraid to dont have the David Buttolph score (Horse Soldier) but it is featured on a compilation disc.
I think next week we will see one of the two scores here at the site, so stay tuned.
