Kinda tragic.
@@bennelson8633 Yeah. I can actually see a subtle empathy in the best friend that's not done to an act. I think he's actually is friends with Truman, but having grown up like that feels helpless to do anything about his situation. Like, he cares somewhere deep down but has no energy left for compassion. Everyone else is straight up evil.
I love how she immediately grabs the knives as soon as something happened between them, just shows how there is no emotional connection between them whatsoever so she doesn't trust Truman at all. I know he seems like an uncontrollable psycho in this scene but normal couples don't immediately grab a weapon the moment the other one has a breakdown.
It's also worth noting that, for the first half of this, he still seems to have some small level of trust toward her. That even if their marriage is hollow and there's not much love between them, she's still his wife. Notice how he reacts with absolute shock to her grabbing the Chef's Pal and brandishing it at him. And watch carefully when he grabs her; he's only doing it to disarm her, look at how far he holds it away before he registers what she just said. It's only when she tips her hand and calls for help that he starts to actually lash out, because any lingering trust is completely broken.
@@mirandahenning6192 This is done to people, whether through the lens of reality television, fame, or even darker government funded projects like MKULTRA, this is a well documented phenomenon. Laura Linney is so underrated at this scene. She managed to show every emotion she felt inside behind a perfectly set professional smile. I feel so bad for Truman when his best friend walks in and you see his reactions at 1:30 and 1:36. Either seeing his friend's shock makes him feel regret and shame for losing it, or worse, he realised the last person he could trust is in on it too.
@@TheMasterUnity At that point I feel he doesn't know, or is in denial still, because it seems like the actor that plays his best friend has some genuine feelings for him. I feel the moment he accepts his best friend is also lying to him, it's when he makes this big speech (that's said by the director to the actor), that if everyone is on it, then he is in it too, to try to convince him that it isn't true...
What a brilliant scene of this film (especially acting and writing wise). The way comedy and thrilling drama collide here is outstanding and scarily good.
That few seconds after 'do something' is a masterclass of tragedy to horror, in such subtle way. It's spooky and the way she immediately smile, almost dancing as a cover, act-run. Genius work from the script, camera work, set lighting and everything. It's a perfect shot. I love it.
What’s weird about this movie is that Truman’s realisation over his faux-reality parallels how a show in the real world would end. Think about it, an over abundance of advertisement, a forced relationship, horrendously contrived situations (I.e. the father), advanced technology breaking the realism due to their obvious glitches, and a director unwilling to take the character in new directions (him never leaving the island). I’m not sure if this was intended but it’s pretty brilliant satire if it be the case.
She was so perfect in this role, she acted it wonderfully and she made it so easy to hate her. In roles like that, I wonder how it affects you in real life.
After the director shouted 'cut!' he offered her a wonderful cup of the new cocoa drink 'Mococoa'. It uses all natural cocoa beans from the upper slopes of Mount Nicaragua, no artificial sweeteners..!
I feel like this is arguably the scene where she damaged the illusion for Truman beyond repair. Particularly the part where she says she cannot work under these conditions and it’s so “unprofessional”. In addition to the “do something” part. If I was in Truman’s position that would be the point of no return for me.
David Moreno Right. Before all that it could be explained away and he may have to accept it. But this scene was the last straw. Everything is confirmed for him.
This may have been a turning point, but this wouldn't have mattered much if other events didn't take place. What really mattered the most in making him realize his world was fake, was because that girl he fell in love with, told him all those years ago. Ever since then, that has planted a seed in his mind. He may have even gotten out sooner because of that, but they have been psychologically manipulating him his whole life, so they were masters at diverting his attention and making him feel silly for thinking things. We already saw how they tried to run cover, how they made his father die at sea so he would always be afraid of the water, etc. Imagine all the stuff they did over his life that we didn't see in the movie. Day in, day out, they were mentally manipulating him by carefully crafting his path through life, who he meets, what they say, etc.
the anger, confusion, exhaustion, and desperation conveyed by Carrey in this scene is remarkable. This is such a dark film, I prefer to read it as such even in the lighter kind of odd moments, they're creepy and unsettling when you know what these actors are doing to this poor man
Get the full effect watching it once as a kid, then later as an adult and realizing just how messed up it actually is underneath the comedy. Brilliantly subversive.
Man, Laura Linney's a good actress. She's an actress, playing an actress who's trying to pretend like she's _not_ an actress and yet torn between revealing that she's an actress and compromising her own safety. What a fantastic scene!

'Who you talking to?' Brilliant. Poor Truman. A life of lies. And I love the 'unprofessional' line from Laura as well. It's like it's own gut punch. As she starts with 'How can anyone expect me to carry on under these conditions?', it makes you wonder for a second if she actually does care about Truman and living some kind of a life with him despite the fact she's clearly in on it. But the reveal of 'It's unprofessional!' really sets in how really is just an entirely uncaring an actor doing a job, clocking in and clocking out with no regard for Truman's privacy, sanity, freedom or life. What I like is that it's still his comedic role, just deconstructed. He still acts quirky, but there's a dark representation about it and how it's humanised.
He was in a fox TV movie where he actually played a very dramatic role way before this movie. It does seem most comedians can act in drama better than dramatic actors can do comedy

I know!! Everyone here is hating on the character, and I know she's incredibly selfish and is helping maintain a damaging lie - but she also lends so much to the movie, and is so perfectly and amusingly acted!
For the record, to anyone who thinks this movie is scary, the original screenplay for this movie was actually intended to be a horror film. Edit: Id like to point out, that a screenplay and a script are not the same thing. The screenplay is basically just a detailed summary of what could POTENTIALLY be a movie. A writer has to pitch their idea for their screenplay to a producer. When a producer thinks it’s a story worth being a film, they will fund a studio to revise the screenplay and make a movie SCRIPT. The script can and usually is different from the original screenplay that it’s based off of. Because of this, the writer is usually never allowed to be in the studio when filming takes place, strictly because they don’t get a say in how the movie is portrayed if they aren’t already the director of it as well. Producers aren’t paying the writer to direct the movie, they’re paying them for their idea. Once they basically buy the rights to it, they will do whatever they want with it.
I don’t think it’s scary, it’s sad. But atleast he gets to leave in the end, but knowing that he probably won’t fit in with the rest of society, just being gawked at by others, makes me even more sad. It is a little freaky that everyone knows everything about someone, even to the littlest thing, that’s the only maybe scary part of it.
@@shaunsteele8244 maybe if the spectators didn't know from the beginning that it was all staged. Something that would just play, like the Shinning, on the POSSIBILITY that something is really going on, but as long as you don't have evidence, you can find other reasons

Or perhaps she wanted the people in charge to value her life and well-being over the continuation of the show.

She's a damn psychopath, gaslighting him like this. She's like the secondary antagonist after Ed Wood. Everyone but the girl who tries to help him is incredibly terrible. His best friend is a special kind of monster
It’s all an act anyways
I kinda wanted certain people to die in this movie --- like the wife and best friend --- they were truly evil to participate in this show
There’s actually a really cool deleted scene that explores his best friend. Remember, they are childhood friends, so he’s know Truman his whole life. He struggles with guilt and depression, and becomes an alcoholic, but when he tries to go to rehab, he can’t get over his addiction because the writers of the show force his to drink all the time. Kinda tragic.
@@bennelson8633 Yeah. I can actually see a subtle empathy in the best friend that's not done to an act. I think he's actually is friends with Truman, but having grown up like that feels helpless to do anything about his situation.
She is afraid he will react appropriately to her deciet. The guilt and severity of what she is doing, she can't trust him because he can't trust her.

I wish I could say that it's just a movie, but frankly this movie is the least terrifying depiction of it and I would waste energy emphasizing how distressing it is on this example alone.
Laura Linney is so underrated at this scene. She managed to show every emotion she felt inside behind a perfectly set professional smile. He knew he was in on it too at that point no doubt.

This movie should be #1 all time
What’s weird about this movie is that Truman’s realisation over his faux-reality parallels how a show in the real world would end.

I feel like this is arguably the scene where she damaged the illusion for Truman beyond repair. Particularly the part where she says she cannot work under these conditions and it’s so “unprofessional”. In addition to the “do something” part. If I was in Truman’s position that would be the point of no return for me.

Right. Before all that it could be explained away and he may have to accept it. But this scene was the last straw. Everything is confirmed for him.
DmanDice and reinforced by what happens later with Marlon and the return of Truman’s father.
David Moreno
Yeah he was just playing along for his chance to escape by that point.
I think the point of no return for me would be the fake forest fire.

So there would have been a chance this masterpiece of a film would have become an even bigger masterpiece.

Laura Linney's performance in this scene is amazes me to this day! Her reaction when Truman stands up and begins yelling. Also, when she realizes she said "Do Something!".

As my mom always told me: everybody has a breaking point ... At the start of this scene, I always wondered what would have happened if Meryl did the right thing and told Truman the truth.
The show probably had a contingency in place in case Meryl ever told him the truth. Men in white coats would show and drag her off, and tell Truman she was losing her mind. Or something along those lines.
