  • "I wake up at 2:30 PM...I don't believe in running in the morning and then training later on in the day time...I think that's backwards...I should exert myself in the boxing gym, not on the road," stated retired undefeated former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather, who spoke to fans about his training regimen on the Leicester stop during his UK tour. Also, the fact that he exerts himself at night time & his body is used to being up at that time & putting in that work is super smart. They call it "Fight Night" not "Fight Morning". That's when he's most awake when other fighters would probably be asleep at those hours during fight night.

    I never understood boxers getting up so early and going to bed early when fights mostly happen at night between 8 and 11pm it makes more sense to get up later and go to bed later to get your body peaking at the right time.

      Run 3-5 miles mwf or tu,th,sat and end with 5-10 hill sprints. Running everyday was killing me as an amateur- my legs were shit. When I cut back to 3 times a week and added sprints my cardio and recovery (and subsequently my mood and ability in the ring) took a huge lift ! I also addressed some nutrition deficiencies and skewed AWAY from heavy carb meals (I’d still have some pasta dishes AFTER training, never early on) and went more for fats (my joints felt better) fiber (lots of broccoli, brussel sprouts, leafy veggies, etc) and protein (felt stronger and less flat). Cleaning up the diet helped with weight management as well - so I didn’t HAVE to run every day to stay near my weight class.

    If you can't train like this, you ain't in shape. Truth hurts. The reason why floyd can do this is because he is so aerobically fit. He could run 7-8 miles at a decent pace with 10-15 extra pounds of muscle than if he was a runner. The only way you can build up to that level is slowly over years and years, and by gaining muscle slowly. The key is the long runs. He always did easy aerobic runs, maybe a few sprints now and then in the run, but mainly aerobic level. The new trend of all this sprinting, anaerobic, strength and conditioning bullshit, hinders overall fitness development. These trainers wanna get you ripped, quick. They don't give a fuck about the long term. Training hard in the gym first, has two advantages, it allows you to be fresh and ready where you need to concentrate and hone your skills. Second it warms the body up and if you take a little rest, leaves you feeling relaxed for running. Which is exactly what you want to be, so you can run at the correct pace. Doing high intensity first thing running leaves you tired before you need to concentrate, without developing aerobic fitness properly. You get enough high intensity training if you training correctly in the boxing gym. And the fitter you are, the longer and harder you can go in the gym. It's a win win. If you want to get better and fitter long term, listen to Floyd not your out of shape s and c trainer

      you don't know shit about training... floyds greatness came from his skills and hunger honed from elite trainers and team ever since he was 2...jogging is not as good HIIT..and thats why u leave it last..

      TJ Waldron I agree with what you said but I think adding running up and down stairs or hills is really good as well for overall shape

    • @77tjw
      @77tjw 7 років тому +43

      Imran Ali obviously his skills are not down to fitness alone. That's a lifetime of hard work plus incredible talent. Im talking about his conditioning which was also why he was so great. He could afford to feel out opponents and switch it on after round 3 because he never faded in a fight. When you have such great endurance, you can relax and breathe in a fight, like Floyd. Watch mayweather v Hatton, the English commentator says something like he thinks he has some breathing technique like yoga because he looks so calm. Really, he is just rare for a boxer in that he has elite runner level fitness. Hiit, that says it all. I came to boxing from a running background. And I can say that where I trained I was by far the best conditioned, except for those who could keep up with me running over 5 miles. Those were the people who could go longest and hardest in the gym. Sprinting or even intervals can't develop endurance to any appreciable level alone. It's just so basic. Hiit does fuck all for your endurance for a professional level/ length fight. It might get you losing a few pounds quick, but if you get FIT, you can run 8 miles a day easy, and you have no weight problems. Hiit is a shortcut. Everybody wants that nowadays. Have patience do it the old school way.

    • @77tjw
      @77tjw 7 років тому +14

      Imran Ali I know a fair bit about training, more than just reading the latest trend on the internet. I know from personal experience and watching others and wisdom and also common sense. Endurance from long runs is your base. The foundation you build on. Without it you're a poor version of yourself and you will never reach your potential. Obviously to be complete you need to add the other components like skills such as timing coordination and balance, develop muscle memory and muscle endurance, as well as strength power and explosiveness. And this is just from the physical perspective. But physically at least, everything else is building on the foundation you lay with the long runs. It all has to come together obviously but endurance is fundamental. Without it you're building on sand.

    • @js-hk6xs
      @js-hk6xs 7 років тому

      TJ Waldron yes but the thing is aside from boxing if your trying to lose wight hiit like you said is the best way to lose wieght quick because I still do treadmill but building up to 5 miles when you are completely out of shape is hard I started first with only bieng able to do 5 minites and build up about 5 minites running on 6.0 I'm gonna try jogging on 5.0 I could prob do a couple miles like two or three cuz I can run on 6.0 but to lose real wight you need to jog like 8 miles that why hiit is better and it does build stamina like running up and down hills running up and down bleacher will build you stamina and once you start shedding pounds as well you can go longer on treadmill

      He did say in the boxing gym he does 7-10 min rounds of 7-15 rounds with different sparing partners. That’s the bulk of his workout. Heavy bag, speed bag, jump rope, body weight exercises here n there. He usually runs late at night I’m guessing after he wakes up from a 4hr nap after working out in the gym.

    his trick is his body and his discipline he trains like DBZ train hard so you fight easy. example train for 15 round when you only fight for 12 rounds if it even goes that far. there is no way you can run out of steam in a 12 round fight if you used to training for 15.
    he stop the bell and uses the clock. bell rings on 2 min rounds. he increases that to 9 mins 15 set. its plan logic not rocket science the keys is discipline.
    what people need to ask him is how dose he think while fighting how does he train his eyes and reaction speed those are the real questions that need to be asked. although this could be because he dose not warm up. he blows his energy on the ring then goes on road work. this makes sense

    The running after training is a good idea but not warming up is a horrible idea he's a incredibly gifted boxer who could pull that off but the average boxer should not go into sparring cold it's dangerous. As for sparring long rounds with different partners coming in its not realistically possible for most fighters because most people do round Robbins so all the fighters at the gym get an even amount of work. He could get away with that because he was the boss but most boxers can't do that until they are the boss or owner of the gym

    Kinda breaks my heart, Floyd saying his trainer cant just being a guy with pads on.. and that they should teach how to take least punishment as possible
    Obviously, his trainer being Roger, a man whose we lost ultimately to the effects of the sport of boxing RIP
    I just sort of visualise Floyd being told by Roger, that it ain't worth taking punishment. Not worth it at all.

      I don't hate floyd...I think he was a great boxer..great athlete..great skills. smart guy smart team..the best boxer of his (weak) era with pacquiao.. however he carefully selected his opponents to protect his 0. Fought canelo very young draining him..fought oscar mosely too late..hatton and marquez were blown up lightweights..(it takes a year to accustom to a weight class)....cotto was at an all time low..he chose berto and maidana twice instead of khan (and hes all about money) khan with his speed and reach and how boxers stuggle with him wudda been very interesting..this is why he was a cherry picker... he never fought a live top guy at his weight like thurman did with porter and garcia.. the only ones i see were maidana and castillo (prime guys at their weight) and in my opinion he lost both first fights!

    • @brmillgr
      @brmillgr 7 років тому +1

      Imran - You have to look at the Ws that his opponents were coming off of. I'll give you Berto, that one I wasn't happy with but Floyd explained it as if it didn't matter who he fought at that point because regardless of who he chose, if he hadn''t proven himself to the doubters at the point it wouldn't have mattered who he fought and beat they still would have had excuses.
      Please, Floyd would still beat Thurman and DSG by UD, they are B level fighters, neither have a good jab, feints, they don't cut-off the ring and aren't nearly aggressive enough to bring the fight to Floyd like Maidana or Castillo did, they would get outboxed easily. Hell Thurman had trouble with Guerrero, a guy Floyd outclassed by a mile almost 4 years ago. Porter is more aggressive but he would still get outboxed easily as well. Khan might have given him trouble early but Floyd would have figured him out just like Canelo did, he probably wouldn't have KO'd him but he would have out boxed him like he did everyone else. Maidana and Castillos style is the only kind that gives Floyd trouble, aggressive, relentless, barrage of punches.
      Now on to the "cherry picking" rebuttal:
      Cotto had just TKO'd Margarito.
      Maidana had just beaten Broner, Josesito Lopez, Martinez and Karass, before those fights he put up a great performance against Khan.
      Alvarez was young but he was an undefeated champion who had previously beaten Trout, Lopez and Mosely, granted an out of prime Mosely.
      Guerrero was on a 17 fight unbeaten run when Mayweather embarrassed him.
      Ortiz had just beaten Berto, who at that time was the WBC welterweight champ.
      Mosely had just TKO'd Margarito and KO'd Ricardo Mayorga (not saying a whole lot but whatever) plus Floyd called out Mosely years before they fought.
      Juan Manuel Marquez was number 3 p4p when they fought and Floyd had just come off an 16 or 18 month lay off when he shut him out, yes he was the bigger man and took a fine for coming in overweight by 2 lbs but it wouldn't have mattered, that was one of Floyds best performances.
      Then we have Hatton who had just KO'd Jose Castillo and was an undefeated champion, (another great fight in my book, he brought the fight to floyd but was just too predictable and loaded up to throw the left hence the check left by Floyd and Hatton face planting into the turnbuckle).
      Before all these was Oscar, who Floyd had been calling out for years as well but for one reason or another ODL waited to make the fight, yes he was out of his prime but Floyd went to 154 for the first time in his career, was outweighed by 10 coming in at only 150lbs on fight night and still clearly outboxed him in the last 5-6 rounds of that fight and Floyd landed 207 to ODLs 122.
      So the "cherry picking" argument holds absolutely no weight with anyone who has paid attention to Floyds career since he was in the Olympics and even the Golden Gloves. The argument just doesn't add up once you look at the facts.
      I've watched the 1st Castillo fight a number of times, with the sound muted so no commentating, it was close but Floyd won the fight, with a torn left rotator cuff. Granted that was the only fight where Floyd looked nervous during the decision and when I watched it live I thought it was a draw or SD in Floyds favor.
      Maidana didn't win either fight. The first one he gave Floyd a brawl for sure but it wasn't as close as it looked, the 1st Castillo fight was much closer.

      I don't hate floyd...I think he was a great boxer..great athlete..great skills. smart guy smart team..the best boxer of his (weak) era with pacquiao.. however he carefully selected his opponents to protect his 0. Fought fresh canelo very young draining him (canelo never faced a A class fighter before that point)..fought oscar mosely too late (mosely was 38, oscar was semi retired)..hatton and marquez were blown up lightweights..(it takes a year to accustom to a weight class)....cotto was at an all time low (got kod by trout soon after but cotto has many fans but always came up short vs the top guys great skills, but low reach, kinda slow)..he chose berto and maidana twice instead of khan (and hes all about money khan was winning the polls) khan with his speed and reach and how boxers stuggle with him wudda been very interesting..this is why he was a cherry picker... he never fought a live top guy at his weight like thurman did with porter and garcia.. he didnt fight who the fans wanted him to fight..the only ones i see were maidana and castillo, maybe coralles too (prime, top fighters like him at their weight) and in my opinion he lost both first fights castillo maidana..answer 1 question when oscar exercised his rematch clause why did he run into retirement then come back when oscar retired?
