      How old are you ? I’m still really young but I always think abt what will my career path be and my future, I’ve been trying out knew things to see what I am passionate about but nothing seems to keep me interested but dermatology and skin care is something I’ve been interested in for a while and atm I’m watching a lot of videos on skin care and I happen to come across this video and The comments are giving a lot of advice on what to look into so I’m thinking about doing more research to be more educated but also seeing that it take plenty of years is kinda making me doubt that I will have what it takes to get through all those years and If I will be able to have the dedication you need so do you any advice on how to stay passionate or what to look into while your still in high school?

    Just to reiterate what Dr. Lee said--becoming a dermatologist is extremely difficult. You have to get into medical school--a huge hurdle in itself--and excel there (ideally top 4%; def top 16%). Research publications are also a must. You don't have to be a genius per se, though. Medical school isn't necessarily rigorous because you have to master obscure and abstract material; it's challenging because you have to assimilate a seemingly inconceivable amount of information. Those that are brilliant don't necessarily excel in medical school--those with a great work ethic and stamina definitely do. It's all in the discipline.

    You can always do an 18 month program and become an aesthetician. It will cost 20-30k to go to a good school though. Depending on what state u live in you can do a certain amount of pimple and blackhead popping. I’ve noticed on Dr Lee’s videos they have one in her office who does facial and there are only certain tools they can use but each state has it own rules. I have a friend who got hers after 30. She already had a degree and career but wanted to try something new. She does it PT at a salon and works on sets for photo shoots in NYC and makes good money as a side hustle. She was lucky and only paid 18k for school as they were just opening that year and were waiting for a accreditation so gave a deal for tuition.

    Worth Mentioning (Canadian Version)
    1. Undergrad GPA 3.8-4.0 (my class average was 3.93) (3-4 yrs)
    2. Med School (3-4 yrs)
    3. Residency (5 years)
    4. Fellowship (1-2 years each)
    At all stages volunteering, research (derm specific), exceptional clinical skills, etc are usually required.

      loveleii10 She was 46 in 2016 she finished her schooling at the age of 33 and now has two young boys. I think one is a baby under 1 year old and the eldest is 9 So maybe she had her first at 37 after she was completely done with her schooling and already working. She took over her fathers dermatology practice in CA. When he retired, she started her first day on the job. She didn't have kids until after she started working at the family's practice. It's safe to conclude she didn't have to balance family,work and education,because she didn't form a family until she completed her specialized degree. Hope this helps.

      Well.. I am an Engineer and my wife is a doctor.. She was just starting her CRRI (compulsory rotary residency internship) after 4 yrs of medical school, when we got engaged and got her medical degree a year later. Total 5 yrs. and at the end we got married. She is preparing for her exams to get into a medical school for her specialization. She is gonna be 26 now and me 30. We are planning to start trying to have a child by this year end. And she is planning to take her specialization (which is 3 yrs) along with it. So since you are 22 only now, I think you have plenty of time. We are Indians btw

    Awesome video....you are a great ambassador for medicine and dermatology in particular.i hope some watching this will make it through what I reckon are at least 12 years of phenomenally hard work at a level of academic attainment that is beyond many peoples imagining! I have a degree from Cambridge in England and post graduate qualifications, so quite good but nowhere near what medics have to do.Sadly I think many of the people who comment " I want to be a dermatologist" have no idea what your training has been and actually think as a dermatologist they will get to spend their days popping blackheads if only they have your job. In reality all they want to be an aesthetician ...and they have a really distorted view of what dermatologists do.

    Wow, 13 years of medical school! That's a whole lot of dedication. My question is, with all those years in school,how much is the tuition of all those years in school estimate to? (not calculating financial aids, grants,etc.)? I know there's financial aid, grants, and scholarships, and top on of that, I believe in one of your videos you said both parents were in the medical field which basically helps pay for one's tuition. But coming from a first generation family majoring in the medical field like yours. On top of that, I know you have two boys. Did you marry and have kids before finishing school or during? How did you manage all of that, if you did?

      But what do u study when u go for your undergraduate? Pre med?

    • @rileykraus5625
      @rileykraus5625 7 років тому

      Some schools don't have "pre-med" as something specific to study. If you are interested in medicine/medical school, usually the big go-to majors would be biology, chemistry, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, etc. It's a really tough road and you have to be really committed throughout. No matter what your major (some people are even math or music majors that go to medical school), you have to take certain courses that medical schools will look for. They are also necessary to do well on the MCAT.

      I'm in the same boat, doing IB at the moment, but I'll be doing pre-med with a biology major at University, then apply to med school and etc..

    People forgot it costs a lot to became a Dr besides paying for school. I had a roommate who lived with a friend and I in NYC when she was doing her internship for over 2 years. This is after doing her bachelor & medical school. She moved to NJ to finish he residency. You cannot work when you are doing your internship so she was lucky her parents could afford to pay her rent & other bills on top of college. Her dad was a Dr too so he was able to afford to help her.

    Dr Lee, I have another burning question that continues to baffle me....I know you've explained how a blackhead formed several times. I can't wrap my brain around skin cells filling a tiny pore, however. Not unless the skin is created from inside. Kinda like a scab heals. Do I have it wrong? Is the skin NEW getting clogged when there's too much sebum, therefore not surfacing, but causing the "bump" whether it be a blackhead, cyst etc? That makes more sense to me, especially since it is not caused by poor hygiene.....does my question make sense? and is the surface black due to the first skin cells hitting oxygen, while the newer cells on bottom(often whiter) have not reached air?...they grow larger as our body MAKES skin cells, as opposed to skin cells filling a pore from the outside in????

    • @vlrissolo
      @vlrissolo 8 років тому

      +Vlrissolo I JUST FOUND THE ANSWER!!! LOL! I see on Mayo's site, the skin, which continually sloughs off, is "moving deeper into the skin and multiply rather than sloughing off " ...at least that is with a cyst. it all makes sense. It was hard to imagine some of these things getting so huge simply by topical sloughing....guess I'm a bit slow!

    I want to become a dermatologist, entering college this fall, any recommendations for school, specialties?

  • @shenkeey
    @shenkeey 6 років тому

    Can someone explain to me why dermatology is attractive? I hear a lot of people talking about it as one of the best medical specialties, but I truly can't figure out why. I don't mean it in a negative way. I'm truly looking at all the specialties, and this one scores very high on job satisfaction. To me it seems like it's kind of routine-labour, with the (close to) the same treatments and diagnoses for the majority of patients you see. The surgery you do is also mostly excisions and other relatively routine surgeries. Can someone explain the beauty of dermatology to me?

    • @Varekai0723
      @Varekai0723 6 років тому

      Maran Nebbeling It pays very well, the workload is relatively low, procedure times are very short and the vast majority of your patients do not have life-threatening conditions. As a result, workload stress is significantly less. True, it's not as groundbreaking as something like neurosurgery, but you'll rarely have to deal with the stress of your patients dying on you on a semi-regular basis and you'll still be able to help people and have time to have a life of your own.
      Some dermatologists eschew stuff like treating warts and acne altogether and only practice cosmetic dermatology and really rake in the big bucks.

    • @shenkeey
      @shenkeey 6 років тому

      I see! So it's basically in the same ball-park as plastic surgery? I mean, people consider it more for the life it can provide next to medicine, instead of the actual subject itself (of course, I'm oversimplifying it, there obviously are plenty of dermatologists that are in love with the organ called ''the skin''). This is a good thing by the way! Right now, I'm leaning towards plastic surgery for the same reasons.

    • @Varekai0723
      @Varekai0723 6 років тому

      Maran Nebbeling Plastics usually has more invasive procedures that are much longer, but yeah, I guess it could be considered a cousin to derm.

    I have a question. you're probably not gonna see since this was like a year ago.
    but when you go to regular college before getting into med school, is there a specific thing you have to major in? like nursing or something? or can you major in anything like journalism or English and still transfer to medical school? Does it matter what master you have? or can you just do anything? then transfer to med school and then so on and so forth.
