moss can be used as an anti-septic if you don't have anything like that in your med kit when in the forest. when i was at a camp with some members of my church last year, i rubbed moss on the blade of my knife and was actually able to eat off it if i chose to do so. also, i've heard of people using moss to clean cuts.
i'v made couple pits simular to that. Couple diferenses are. I lay the stones to the pit, burn an fire there for an hour. take the charks of, put the meat in wrapd in leafs or sprouts. put some sand back on, use the charks to make fire above the covered pit. I usualy cook it aroud 3 hours.
akhennatten. You have completely missed the point of some things shown. First, the bread didn't rise because it wasn't supposed to. It was a damper which is a flat bread, hence no yeast/baking powder! Second. As he used the ashes from the fire (that the rocks were in) the bread had to be cooked just after the hangi was filled, otherwise the ashes would have cooled too much to be of use. If the ashes had been undisturbed they would stay hot longer, but the rocks had to be taken out for the hangi!
I take everything that I can from Bear Grylls, Les Stroud, Cody Lundin, Dave Canterbury, Andrew Price, Mykel Hawke and Ray Mears. I throw out what doesn't work and keep the rest. So far I haven't thrown a single thing that Ray or Andrew says.
The rabbit looked good, but the bread didn't rise due to lack of yeast or baking soda. If you use soda you don't have to wait long to allow it to rise. I agree he should've timed the bread to be ready with the rabbit, making it like an hour in advance then baking after the rabbit was going would work. Other than that I loved it, his techniques are sound.
This filter won't be reliable against crypto or giardia. Its perfect if your caught short but not to be thought of as perfect. Luckily the water coming off our peat hills in Scotland and some areas of the UK is pretty safe, normally dark because of high manganese though. To tackle the bugs though a quick boil would finish off what this filter started. Good ol' Ray though he is a great inspiration
when i did a search for ray mears bushcraft on google i clicked on vioh tv very good link you dont have to download it but you can if you want and its also fats loading
All animals eat their food raw, only humans cook, and we get most of the acute and degenerative disease. Is there a connection? Of course. In an outdoors situation eating food raw makes as much sense as if one eats sushi at a food outlet or has a salad with raw nuts and seeds at home. Fire for heat but not cooking, saves time and energy to eat raw. In snow survival situations a simple snow shelter is proposed without building fire. I did like his birch tea video.
Remember, although Ray is teaching, laws do exist. I'm an American who once lived in both the UK and Ireland and am totally aware of the ratio of people to land and the local laws. Even in the Rocky Mountains of America there are laws concerning fires. But mind you, few men would rather freeze to death than go to jail for starting a fire. And few courts here would prosecute knowing it meant your life to start that fire. Bottom line: fire is necessary for life, but not for recreation!
@DuckBoy266 Why? America's the best really, much more "wild" territory than most other countries, besides Canada obviously. My state is 99% forested, plenty of places to "practice bushcraft". Plus, in America, you can practice bushcraft with a gun on your hip ;)
@vue084783 If everyone who went out to camp chose not to clean after themselves the wilderness would be littered with unused fire rings and shelters(and it is). The Forest Rangers in America actually cruise the backcountry with shovels just to clean up and dismantle old fire rings. These aren't rules and laws. This is simple respect for the wilderness!!! Leave no Trace!!
Oh wait, he said it sterilizes the water... Hhhmm. When he digs into the mud under the moss I was afraid because monsters might be down there and pull him under and eat him. :o(
His peat/charcoal filter really does work. The exact same ingredients are in aquarium filters.
hmm a use for sphagnum moss besides plants. I love these survival shows. Thanks for enlightening me. so cool! :-D
Oh man, I love damper.
I make it ever time I go camping. :)
~Frosty.
The rabbit stuffed with "hedge garlic" aka "garlic mustard" looks awesome. I gotta try this soon

This was just great! Thank you so much!

So nature is someone's land - and public is public land , =)
Concerning the water purifyer, GREAT. But what about potential viruses?
I agree with you. Before I found this guy the only videos I could watch were Survivorman's, but he retired. :(
holy crap that bread looked good
Im surprised Ray mears's show isnt banned in UK like self defence is
the song towards the end is Deep Forest - Hunting
when he says tastes fine, IT TASTES FINE
That purified water looked more like a Tequila Slammer, are you kidding us Ray! : )
certian snails are edible , they eat them in france with lots of garlic , the best way to cook them is to boil them first then oven cook

Birch tea is something to do if bored, not likely one would be bored if in survival situation though. Not for a while anyway.
nice one raymond
can u also use other mosses to purify or does it have to be that stuff that he uses?
and he runs a bushcraft school, woodlore, who do lessons...im very very tempted to sign up :P

i think he lies a bit, at the end he says tastes fine but i bet as soon as the cameras go off he spits it out and says fuck me that is disgusting!
is it me or is ray wearing converse all stars
Anybody know what the proportions are for the water, flour & milk powder to make the damper bread?

i would trust this guy over Bear Grylls any day of the week

the son of god!!!!!!!!!!!
@ 5:11 ... aw YESS ! lol.. :D
Yeah I got hungry just thinking about it.
Remember if your lost in the wilderness freezing to death ! Find someone for permission to light your life saving fire ! Awesome info
what language is the song in?

Hear hear!
bear grylls is awesome but he's just turned it into a extreme sport ... ray for lesuire both equally boss XD
@TyrantsAREhere he means you need permission from the landowner, as many many forest fires have been accidentally lit by inexperienced woodsmen.

Ray's been off TV ever since...
@SubUrbanBushMan 2-1 flour to milk powder.
great video but the background music is prett annoying though
he made a martini
hahaha!
set it and ??????????????? FORGET IT
In England starting fire in public is illegal, and if you're doing it on someone's land, obviously you need permission.
milk powder. milk. powder.
Hate to see people hunt/eat rabbit. Adore Ray tho. I'll let him off this one time.
my mom said to wash your hands before u eat
land owner mate
You will starve eating rabbit how about deer tacos or deer chili?
your cute little filter aint taking out the parasites that are going to make you sick..
