Jackpot was also in 4 during the final boss, but you needed to be in DT and land the final hit using Nero’s buster. This also returned for DMC5, and in both cases it was super satisfying.
Coming back to this video, I noticed something interesting in Vergil's last scene in DMC 3. There's a nuance that's barely noticeable in his last scene. While he sounds confident in himself about to fight 'the prince of darkness', notice he threw away his scabbard. Completely uncharacteristic of Vergil, who's most elegant and always sheaths his Yamato immediately after use. According to old Eastern swordsman code, there is never EVER a reason for one to toss their scabbard . . . unless the wielder feels it will be the last time they can. In other words, if they think this fight will mean their death. Seeing as how DMC 3 was obsessed with subtle body language in all of its cutscenes, this had to have been intentional. It's almost as if, despite his vow of confidence, Vergil knows deep down that this will be his last real fight before his end. For anyone that already played DMC 1 and is aware he becomes Nelo Angelo makes it even sadder. This was such a perfect way to end this concise saga of Dante's brother
I think it shouldn't be understated just how important Vergil is to character action games and other action games too. He's really what solidified the rival character as a staple of the genre. He's also perhaps the best one ever created.
Meh, Pokemon rivals are shallow as a puddle. Garry whole character is being a dick, and while it is a good motivation for the player to face him and emerge victorious, the lack of anything else just makes him look 1 dimensional with a protagonist that is zero dimensional.
"Everyone likes to say that Devil May Cry games are just about crazy nonsense, but this game deserves more credit than that." Glad to hear someone acknowledge that the character building for some of the main cast in DMC3 was portrayed well enough for emotional investment. Sure, the story and a majority of the dialogue is made of ham and cheese (purposely so, I would suspect), but there are a number of sincere moments that help solidify characters such as Vergil.
Fun fact: When you fight Beowulf, none of Dante's weapons do any extra damage to him. But if you're playing as Vergil, Yamato will do extra damage because it's considered a dark weapon.
I think it's fitting that Vergil lost to Dante using Force Edge. If not taking into account Dante winning with it over Mundus in DMC, it says a lot about Vergil trying too hard to be like his farther instead of himself. It may have been a tie or even a win if Vergil would stick to his sword and his own fighting style.
Sephi D yeah that's what I thought as well. if he stuck with the blade he's perfected instead of something he's never wielded even once he would've won by a landslide
@@kelvinwebley6971 it was really just Dante barely winning through perserverance. 1 had a similar 3rd fight with Nero Angelo where they're basically equal and Dante barely wins
@@The-Beyonder See, but what makes the fight so good is that you can speculate about why Dante won. Instead of a clean answer or added power giving Dante the edge, you can contemplate what gave Dante the strength to beat his brother in the end.
That ending always gets to me. When Vergil just cannot let his resentment and stubbornness go and even cuts Dante's hand when he falls. It's so bitter, and really sad. Some powerful themes and real human emotion going on in that scene, and in the whole game. I remember that scene really hitting me when I first played the DMC games. It felt so real. I have experienced situations like that in real life where I felt like either party in that scene.
My interpretation is that he wanted to ensure Dante would leave before the portal closure, that was the reason why he jumped down in the first place. He didn't want any further delay.
Great video, Hero. I always liked Vergil both as a character and a villain, not only that but quick draw is my favorite fighting style of all time. I really hope if DMC5 is going to happen Vergil will get his own missions, but knowing capcom it won't happen.

its crazy how right you are in this last part of the video about how to bring him back and have his son save him or be strongly involved. That is exactly what DMC5 is now.
I've seen people criticize this video saying it feels more like a plot summary of DMC3 rather than an analysis of Vergil as a character, but to me I think that shows how good of an antagonist he is. He's involved in and related to every aspect of the story; him and Dante aren't constantly fighting the entire game but he's doing just as much as Dante is, and understanding what he does during the story and how he effects it and vice versa is integral to understanding his (no joke intended) motivations.
I imagine if there is ever a continuation of Devil May Cry, Vergil is alive but he is lost. He could be in robes and roaming around cities, grizzled and broken. His sword could be a testament to that, it was in the hands of another that could help him find his path. I mean if Nero is able to fix Vergil's sword, its like a gesture that he could also fix Vergil. Just a theory I came up with just now.
A. Long. Time. Coming. It finally arrived and it certainly lived up to my moderate expectations. While some fans love to call him overrated and the gaming media, press, and certain developers seems to outright dislike him and the series itself, I don't think you can deny that they did great with him in the 3rd game. Expanding a pretty cool boss from the first game into the second most memorable character in the entire series after Dante himself? You gotta clap that up. Great video HBH. I just wish people would give this game and the series a chance before completely writing them off. Though as you said, let's just celebrate what we got.
Thanks for making this video. I've always thought that DMC3 actually managed to tell a pretty great story while staying true to its craziness and over the top style and that this also applies to Dante and Vergil in DMC3. People like to dismiss them as generic anime stereotypes but I think, in DMC3 at least, they were really much more than this.
I think bringing Vergil back somehow in a post DMC1 game would be a disservice to his character. His stubbornness is his entire persona and what leads to his downfall at the end of 3 and his enslavement to Mundus, so to have Dante or Nero somehow find a way to rescue him and have everything be hunky dory would cheapen his character and story. Death has no weight when every great character is written out of it.
@@ltv8433 I feel the same way I did then. It cheapens his character to try and redeem him at the end of DMC5 after he killed countless people through the events of the game. I loved the boss fight but from a story perspective bringing him back and trying to redeem him is awful.
God Vergil was one of my favorite Rivals/Antagonists out there. I do hope that they use that as a plot line for a potential DMC 5. Damn Vergil, even before your "death" you are an absolute badass.
I'd love to see you flip around your Devious Intent by doing a protagonist instead, specifically Uncle Murder himself: Caim from Drakengard. There's so much to work with in both 1 and 2 that it could provide an interesting twist, and demonstrate the madness that is the series creator
I'm so happy that I got to play this wonder of a game. I was very little when I experienced the story so I didn't think much of it,but after seeing this I now know just how good the story is. Great video man,as always.
Does it freak out anybody else how Vergils and Dante's hair completely changes how they look? Their faces are identical and yet they don't look anything alike
I think the reason behind his pursue of power is because since he was a kid he always chased by demon who want to annihilate Sparda bloodlines and like you said, if he have power, than he can protect the one you love.
It would be nice if Vergil did get his own game, rather than getting the short end of the stick and just being a shoe in for more content on a game we already played. For me, he's just as likable as Dante, because of his totally opposite personality. While Dante is the lighthearted, fun loving badass, Vergil is the calm, cool, collected kind. DMC 3 still has the best story in this series because of this sibling rivalry, and I'd really love to see more of it. At the very least, more development for Vergil. I just hope the next sequel isn't of the one that tries to call itself Devil May Cry...
I think the Blade Wolf scene in MGR's final boss is a reference to Vergil appearing to fight Arkham. Both feature similar looking katanas and a powerful enemy.
My theory is that Vergil is dead in DMC1 and it's just a vessel being controlled. Vergil had too much pride and would rather have died than be left to control, which he obviously viewed as weak. Because the entity's brain still contains Vergil's memories the empty vessel can't process what the previous owners brain remembered. Even though Mundus refers to it as Vergil, we have to bear in mind, it is the body of Vergil. Vergil is not alive anymore, just a shell remains.
You know Vergil was the stronger one. He just did one giant mistake of using a weapon he didn't normally use against someone that used the kind of weapon he was using. Seriously! How can he go against Dante, the guy with the giant longsword with a big heavy sword when his default style is nimble and precise? That was the dumbest move he could have done but still something in character as that sword is the key to Sparda's power, Vergil's sole goal all through the game.
Your commentary details of how Vergil Sparda lived through out the game and left a mark of Legacy to us players made a huge impact not just on DMC1, DMC3SE, DMC4SE but to this upcoming game DMC5.. I like how you deliver about Vergil’s story and it kinda makes sense why I believe Vergil should be one of the main characters on DMC Series which is crowned Ruthless, Slick, & Surprisingly stronger than Dante in terms of Style, Techniques, & Weapon Arms. Long live the Dark Slayer Ruler of DMC Series!!! All hail lord Vergil Sparda! My respect to this character beyond imagination as we speak.
I like to think that Vergil’s character is comparable to Anakin Skywalker’s. While I am a fan of the SW prequels, I can understand why people wish they were much better so I do consider Vergil’s execution was done a lot better than Anakin’s. Both the characters are initially presented as an enemy of the protagonists in their respective franchises and pose a significant threat, only to find out that there’s a much more shocking and deeper connection between them and the protags: Darth Vader being Luke’s father and Nelo Angelo being Dante’s brother. It’s then in the prequel stories where we are given new perspectives and backstory of the characters so that we understand how and why they turned into their darker selves. And the stories did their job to showing their potential as warriors. So by the end of these prequel stories, it gives more weight to the characters as we see their rise and downfall into what we first meet them as. Only Vergil’s seems more impactful because of how well executed it was and how players got connected with him. Even still, I believe that both franchises deserve credit for building on these characters so that when we go with them on their journey, the impact is heavier by its end. And as Bit said in the video, the more we’ll want to the see the former version of what the characters at some point in the future TL;DR version: Vergil concept of falling to darkness reminds me of Anakin Skywalker.
Believe it or not, I actually managed to beat Virgil 3rd on my first time. I had to use literally every single health item I'd accumulated throughout the game, AND the devil trigger items in order to exploit the devil trigger health regain system, and even then it came down to the absolute last pixel of health and sheer luck that I managed to finally down him. It was an absolutely incredible experience, quite possibly the most intense and memorable final boss I've ever fought second only to The Boss in MGS 3. It truly cemented in my mind the affinity so many people have for this character, and was the reason I pre ordered DMC 4 SE just for the chance to play as him.
Dante, a real chaotic neutral who often unwittingly or instinctually does some good, opposes our beloved Vergil, who toes the line between lawful neutral and lawful evil. Lawful evils are the best characters imo, period. They have devious plans and intentions, yet follow a strict code and have honor and pride deeply rooted in that code. It's always fun to see a villain strictly following their own guidelines, because they legitimately think that what they're doing is right and just. By their narrative, they *are* the good guy. It's often difficult to argue with their motivations or their perspective of the world.
I doubt Vergil would make a return, but rumors about the fifth entry are that Nils Hognestad is gonna voice the lead role, assuming it's made by Capcom and that they aren't stupid enough to replace Reuben Langdon, Johnny Bosch or Daniel Southworth. I hope he plays Sparda in his own origin story about his rebellion of the demon world and we can finally get to know more about the Man, the Myth, and the Legend that is the Dark Knight Sparda.
If I had to put it in words, Vergil's obsessive relationship with power is like Seto Kaiba's, but - with the addition of DMC5 - he shares so many character traits and flaws with Damian Wayne. It's weird to think about, but I love it all the same because Vergil isn't like any other character I know despite similarities - he's not quite as noble as Damian, he's not quite as megalomaniacal as Seto, etc.
Great vid. Watching in 2017 after the success of RE7 and hoping Capcom realizes how many good franchises they have in their stable that they're not using at all.
The story in DMC3, the hate love relationship between the two brothers, the different intents of how to handle Sparda's and Eva's heritage, these things make DMC3 the best DMC ever in my opinion and the best action game of all time (with gameplay, setting and graphics)! Fuck english, I'm too cool for that!
Ah its that beautiful Blue Moon time..the dawn of a new Hyper Bit Hero video :L Don't worry Hyper, however slow your uploads are, their still not as slow as TheGamingBritShow. And even ENB made a comeback to frequent uploads..I can dream >.
Actually HyperBit, it was confirmed by one of DMC4's localization workers that Nero is Vergil's son, and that it was going to feature prominently in the game's plot, but was left out to be implemented in a potential sequel.... that will probably never happen. Source: www.capcom-unity.com/carbo/blog/2009/04/28/captivate_2009__devil_may_cry_news_no_new_game_unfortunately
Confirmed by who? That's not really a confirmation, until the producer or the director say it then it's not confirmed, it was an early plot for dmc4 but it didn't make it to the cut maybe because they kept it for a sequel or maybe they just didn't like it simply because it doesn't fit Vergil's character. The idea came from dmc4 writer who doesn't even work for capcom anymore but he released his dmc4 story freelance as 2 novels, it showed many differences between his story and the one we saw. All that was in 2009, Now the fans actually came up with way better theories about Vergil's connection to Nero, capcom themselves can write a better story other than Vergil being a dad or having a secret lover, that'd destroy his character. Plus if capcom is trying to make the son/dad idea happen then they shouldn't confirm it's 10 years between dmc3 and 4. They seem like trying to tell a different connection between Vergil and Nero.
+prettynina1000 They also confirmed it in the Devil May Cry 3 1 4 2 Art Book, which lists Nero outright as Vergil's son. Additionally, it's not 10 years between DMC3 and DMC4. It's 10 years between DMC3 and DMC1, with an undefined period of time between 1 and 4. However Dante has been stated to be around his mid thirties, meaning about seven or eight years between the two games. In turn, that would mean almost seventeen or eighteen years between DMC3 and DMC4.
+RevanX77 The dmc4 artbook is as non-canonical as the novels are, has many mistakes with the Rockman lore, with inconsistencies that got infos and details didn't make it to the final product like Nero would have a full DT, we would get some stages on a mountain area with snow, etc. As i said, it's very possible they planned for Nero to be Vergil's son at the beginning but they changed their mind during development that's why dmc4 story got alot of plot holes in it. And look at how many years after dmc4 without official confirmation about it, it's because capcom trying to ignore it since they're probably trying to tell a different story See all evidence that lead to Nero is related to Vergil: -A guy from localization -An non-canon artbook -A non-canon book written by the author who left capcom. All evidence that Nero COULDN'T be Vergil's son -Producer saying it happens 10-11 years after dmc3 -Producer saying Nero is the same age as DMC3 Dante (18-19) -Vergil's established hatred of humans, so what about sleeping with one?
Despite the fact that Vergil's form in DMC1 is always referred to as "Nelo Angelo", it's a misnomer. It's supposed to be "Nero Angelo", which is Italian for "Black Angel". It's Japanese translated to lallated English...or Engrish. "Deck the harrs with boughs of horry, fa ra ra ra raaa, ra raaa raaa raaa"
yeah I really don;t get why so many people say that DMC has a shitty story. DMC2 was...all over the place admittedly, but DMC1 while the voice acting could be silly and stilted did have good atmosphere, a well done mystery that builds up to an ultimate confrontation and really showed Dante as a kindhearted badass, while DMC3 expanded on dante's past and expanded on his history with his at the time mysterious brother (though at the time I didn't know vergil was in DMC1 havign never finsihed it at the time and still ahven't) not to mention everything involving arkham and his plans.
+Sir Gus the Mighty when i picture aomeone with power i cant help but hear Vergil's voice by Dan Southworth. sorru but i really love his voice in every line in DMC3
Watching the scenes in this video made me cringe. I remember playing Arkham boss fight when Vergil appeared and thinking "holy shit this is too much awesome to handle right now".

DMC 3 still has the best story in this series because of this sibling rivalry, and I'd really love to see more of it. At the very least, more development for Vergil.
I just hope the next sequel isn't of the one that tries to call itself Devil May Cry...
+Josh Davis you mean the one that calls itself Devil may Cry: Devil may Cry
seriously what were they thinking with that name
I wish I knew Bison. However, the SE of DMC4 gives me hope. :) We may see a Devil May Cry 5 yet
I think the Blade Wolf scene in MGR's final boss is a reference to Vergil appearing to fight Arkham.
Both feature similar looking katanas and a powerful enemy.
Oh and similar music
It's always a real treat whenever you post a video. The Yakuza video you made is my favourite.
Jester D. Growlithe he really wanted to be just like his father Sparda
This guys gonna love dmc 5
And as Bit said in the video, the more we’ll want to the see the former version of what the characters at some point in the future
TL;DR version: Vergil concept of falling to darkness reminds me of Anakin Skywalker.
Don't worry. Virgil is back in Devil May Cry 5.
Little did he know.
It truly cemented in my mind the affinity so many people have for this character, and was the reason I pre ordered DMC 4 SE just for the chance to play as him.
dmc5 is vergil hiring vergils brother and son to kill vergil so vergil can be vergil
Vergil was so successful, every video game rival from then on was compared to him. And the best of the best were referred to as their "Vergil".
God I would love for them to bring back vergil in a 5th installment of actual dmc.
A fitting tribute to one of gaming's finest.
Vergil was infused with his son Nero's arm in the 4th
I'm here from the future to tell you that the brothers are back.
Dante, I reject my humanity!
Little did he know Vergil wasn’t dead and would return in dmc5
Devious Intent for Dr. Cid from Final Fantasy XII Please. You would love that guy so much.
Vergil isn't necessarily a bad guy but the consequences of his actions could've been catastrophic to the human world if Dante didn't step in.
capcom, make a game based on vergil
Jesus, this Video was so, nicely done up. I watched it all Good job
Dmc3 Vergil: *beats the crap outta you
Dmc5 Vergil, Dante: Royal guard
I doubt Vergil would make a return, but rumors about the fifth entry are that Nils Hognestad is gonna voice the lead role, assuming it's made by Capcom and that they aren't stupid enough to replace Reuben Langdon, Johnny Bosch or Daniel Southworth.
I hope he plays Sparda in his own origin story about his rebellion of the demon world and we can finally get to know more about the Man, the Myth, and the Legend that is the Dark Knight Sparda.
Well, DMC 5 is out. And it's got Vergil.
7:07 love how Vergil holds the gun sideways lol
If I had to put it in words, Vergil's obsessive relationship with power is like Seto Kaiba's, but - with the addition of DMC5 - he shares so many character traits and flaws with Damian Wayne. It's weird to think about, but I love it all the same because Vergil isn't like any other character I know despite similarities - he's not quite as noble as Damian, he's not quite as megalomaniacal as Seto, etc.
Now that DMC 5 is out, would you consider making a video on his character growth? That would be fun.
DMC3:
Dante: Remember what we use to say?
Dante and Vergil: Jackpot!
DMC5:
Vergil: don't you dare say it!
Dante: Jackpot!
... He's back.
plus Dante can't get Nero's help, since he himself is stuck in hell. The end of DmC 2
Ah its that beautiful Blue Moon time..the dawn of a new Hyper Bit Hero video :L
Don't worry Hyper, however slow your uploads are, their still not as slow as TheGamingBritShow.

ModelOmega Well if the sales for DMC4SE are anything to go by there's a better shot for DMC5 now than there ever was.
*****
I'm still skeptical because Capcom.
And look at how many years after dmc4 without official confirmation about it, it's because capcom trying to ignore it since they're probably trying to tell a different story
See all evidence that lead to Nero is related to Vergil:
-A guy from localization
-An non-canon artbook
-A non-canon book written by the author who left capcom.
All evidence that Nero COULDN'T be Vergil's son
-Producer saying it happens 10-11 years after dmc3
-Producer saying Nero is the same age as DMC3 Dante (18-19)
-Vergil's established hatred of humans, so what about sleeping with one?
So now the real question is, has the Real Vergil returned? Guess we will find out sometime next spring!
He has, but he is still corrupted
Despite the fact that Vergil's form in DMC1 is always referred to as "Nelo Angelo", it's a misnomer. It's supposed to be "Nero Angelo", which is Italian for "Black Angel". It's Japanese translated to lallated English...or Engrish.
"Deck the harrs with boughs of horry, fa ra ra ra raaa, ra raaa raaa raaa"
man i really want a new devil may cry game
I love you. Vergil rocks
One of my favorite bosses right up there to Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts and the werewolf archdemon in Ninja Gaiden 2.
I want to play as vergil. Dont care what game kr genre just put him in trust me on this capcom.
Laughs in devil may cry 5
yeah I really don;t get why so many people say that DMC has a shitty story.
Vergil isn't exactly a villain he's actually an anti hero if you look more into Dante and Vergils back story.
My second favorite DMC character right behind Nero
I hope they make a game about how Dante & Nero (maybe lady and trish can come along?) Go to the demon world to rescue Vergil.
Great video!
Dat MGR reference *_*
I want DMC 5 soooo bad
virgil need his own videogame!
The song that plays at 05:59 is "Spirit of the wolf" from MGR
Good news - we're getting DMC5 after all. If Vergil will be in it.... we'll just have to see.
"Why DmC's Vergil is a bad character"? :3 or that DmC review? exciting!
Glad that vergil is back for 5
Vergil just sounds like the biggest nerd ever trying to be cool but fails miserably.
i find his voice rather enticing
Vin Sama surely you can't be serious?
+Sir Gus the Mighty when i picture aomeone with power i cant help but hear Vergil's voice by Dan Southworth. sorru but i really love his voice in every line in DMC3
Or... how about a new story about the return of the imprisoned Sparda, once thought to be slayed by Mundus?
That was the reboot , real Sparda cant be imprisoned . but he could come back
Sparda's not enslaved he's dead
The father of my favorite dmc character
>Nero another character heavily implied to be his son
Wait what?
DMC 5 has been confirmed
The music t the last battle with Vergil reminds me of titanic for some reason
8:01 that's such a sibling thing to say
Next Devious Intent should be either Albert Weaker or Skull Face
Watching the scenes in this video made me cringe. Holy shit is this a good game, with a really good story and some of the best characters in action gaming (Arkham and his clown form is actually pretty interesting, too, of course not as much as Vergil). I remember playing Arkham boss fight when Vergil appeared and thinking "holy shit this is too much awesome to handle right now".
Yeah the should have made devil may cry 5. It would have been cool to play as Vergil as well as Dante and Nero. I love the Idea of a game having multiple protagonists and switching prospective between them.
8:25 my favorite dmc quote
I hope you come back to virgil's story now that dmc 5 has bern out
we shall never surrender
I would like Nero showing up on the motorcycle and then him and Lucia have to save Dante from the demon world.
