@@samuelcamarillo1349 came after ‘Soul Mining’ with themes later expressed on ‘Infected’ which was a much grittier, and aggressive sounding album - “Heartland” didn’t really fit in but had way more of a statement within its lyrics - this made a great B-side to “Heartland” however as it was a more cheerful sounding tune to offset it despite the theme again being the same. Kind of sounds like a mix between “Giant”, and “Out of the Blue”
@@jaybowden2658 It was released afterwards, but it's actually from the same recording sessions as Soul Mining and that second version of The Nature of Virtue
This was 1st track on an album my chum had. Thanks to Chloe I’m hearing it for 1st time since 1987 or something. Kids- it’s bloody really scary how not unlike Marty Mc Fly , you can be 30 fucking years into the future. Don’t waste your time cos “ time moves fast and moving faster all the time “ ( name that tune ) . This is unfortunately still as relevant if not more. Love to all anorak wearers and cool people whom like this music 🇨🇳😃
It's the first day of Spring, with clean air on the wind ... Taken back to 1986, hearing a cassette recording of this, Heartland and Born in the New S.A. The hypocrites on the television screen are trying to disguise what they really mean. They say things are getting better, when we know they're getting worse ... Prescient as ever Matt.
Matt johnson being a dark bugger, with his observations on the world and turning it into a song which should have had more prominence than a b side. That said, regardless of where he or Epic chose to put it, we found it and added it to our collective music collections/playlists. I like the fact that matt doesnt take the easy route when it comes to music. I like that he is on the fringes and that you have to work harder to find him. I admire unconventional and challenging. Matt takes on the world on his own terms and we as listeners and admirers of his craft gladly follow.
He supposedly had a shelved album called Pornography Of Despair before Soul Mining, including tracks like Dumb As Deaths Head etc. That was my holy grail as an angsty teen.
@modifiedcontent mine too...i knew hed shelved it. Cant understand why artists do that...prefab sprout did that with the album protest songs.....but at least they eventually released it. There was a demo track called 'lip tripping' which matt released in 1992ish on the volume cd series. That doesnt have any singing on it but matt introduces it. That showed promise, but for whatever reason that didnt appear in any form on 'dusk'. You can listen to that track on yt...
@modifiedcontent im suprised to say someone has very graciously uploaded a copy of ' dumb as deaths head' on yt. It was released on a flexidisc (remember them) in record mirror way back when....
I heard an interview today where Matt said he'd always been disappointed this track "slipped through the cracks" and it should have been on the next album after release
Thanks for uploading this. I'm reading Matt's biography just now and this was mentioned in it. I heard this live in Glasgow at the comeback tour but had no idea what it was or where it was from.
I'm such a huge fan of old school The The. I'd love to hear this without all the electronic music, just raw instruments. A fat bass guitar would make this song sing.
Don't take me wrong. I am mad about the the and Matt Johnson but this song sounds very much like other songs from this band. I keep expecting him to burst in with " she was lying on the bed with her lips parted " , its almost the same tune.
I need this in digital format for download. Any ideas or is it only on vinyl? I know he performed it for the comeback special. But I want the original too.
One of the greatest songs never heard. I was lucky to own the compilation in 1986!
the gateway compilation so so many great bands
Jesus. I haven't seen this album cover or heard this song in 35 years.
Thank you VERY MUCH. ^^^
@@tommc4916 Enjoy the rediscovery!
I need to find this compilation on vinyl. I probably had (part of it) on a bad tape copy when I was a kid.
Used to listen to this every morning while getting ready for school. Ah, teenage depression.
Shop class 1986 just called my memory! Great song back then, and a classic today!
I've been a fan of The The since 1986 and I only discovered this thirty seconds ago!
The 1st song of theirs or his I ever heard in about 1982 😃👍
Classic The The - Never understood why this wasn't deemed album-worthy
I'm guessing it didn't really fit in
Yes indeed, lyrically it's like "Infected" material, but musically it's still available somewhat at "Soul Mining" phase

What I meant is just like Nature of Virtue and Perfect, Johnson must've felt it didn't really fit in with the rest of the tracks
This song is amazing
What I love about matt, you dont have to listen to the music, you can shout his lyrics over and over, pure genius
Great that he played this last night at RFH!
RIP Matt's dad :(
Loved this as a kid, still jams ...
one of the 1st The The songs i ever heard thanks to that compilation release .

A great track off a great compilation lp. Which I still own.
Thanks for this! Hadn’t heard this song in years and to finally hear it again almost brought tears.
I have this on vinyl! This is one of my favorite The The songs. The chorus is amazing and haunting.

Shares some lyrics with Heartland. What would he make of the London skyline today.
One of « The The » best songs ! ❤️
I fell in love with this song from this album. It was years and years later that I got so see them play this live in NYC. So happy
What a great surprise to hear this in Chicago!
Started collecting these again!

This is why I love public radio. Cool gems like this.
Absolutely Fabulous
I first heard it in the Bristol concert of the 2018 The the comeback tour. Can't stop listening to it since!
2022. A classic song that’s still not on Spotify
It’s on there now :)

My fave The The song
Thanks alot for uploading - It was hard to find for years.
Thanks WFMU!
Sounds like the transition between ‘Soul Mining’, and ‘Infected’ - as it sounds like it could be from both albums
timeless

Still relevant in 2024 even more so
opening white man rap is dope. Twinkle toes synth solo a bit sickly tho
Also available on a one-sided promo only single and as the 'b' side of certain copies of the 12" version of Heartland.
Great song as B side of 'Heartland' 12" with 'Born in the new S.A.'
I have this Album.
Ooh, this is a new one to me. Very unusual track.
It's a beaut.
Must better than the rubbish i hear on the radio everyday
