Bioactive Harvest mouse enclosure setup

  • Setting up a larger, bioactive setup for my 3 Harvest mice. As mentioned in the video, I didn't end up adding live plants / grasses in the end as when I went to the garden centre they were all dead and crispy, probably not the right time of year for it! I'll be adding more clean up crew to the tank as it progresses.

I have several lizard species, 2 different snake species, guinea pigs, mice, dogs and assorted feeder insects that I love and take care of, but whenever I try to talk about them to share an idea on how to improve something for one of them or something funny they did, I’m lucky to get a grunted response if I get any response at all. 😢

    Thank you for this adorable video Emi, recently had to put my old rat man, Jasper to sleep. Still hard to believe that my 2 first rats are both now gone. Miss them both so much, they were the perfect boys to introduce me to rat keeping and I'll be forever grateful to them for that. ❤

    I would suggest adding some Worms or something Isopod adjacent, to help aerate the soil! The Mice may eat them over time, which you can think of as enrichment. I would also add water that has been squeezed out of fish tank filter media, if you have access to it, when hydrating the soil as this will add beneficial ammonia and nitrite eating bacteria directly to your soil

    • @Emiology
      @Emiology  Рік тому +3

      Not always! I’d say if you’re putting any live plants in they do, as there will be a lot more water involved but for mammals that don’t need it to be wet / humid and could dig up drainage layers (like rats and fancy mice) it would be more hassle than it would be useful 😅

    Emi, how long does it take until the fur goes back to normal? I treated my rats for mites in September and a few of my boys still look patchy, actually just like your mice here 3:15. I didn't know it was because of the mite treatment and was worrying something might be wrong with them (even though other than that everyone seems totally fine). I was relieved to see that it's related to the mite treatment, but still wondering how long it would take to go back to completely normal again.

    • @JaydaAshlyn_

      the springtails eat the mould! This substrate isnt ideal for a full hamster enclosure though because theyre burrowers with sensitive respiratory systems. Keeping the substrate damp enough that their burrows wont collapse but dry enough to prevent RI’s is a near impossible balance 😔 all of my animals are bioactive except my hamsters for this reason but you can totally give them a section of ecoearth or something instead as extra enrichment

  • @cerial0411

    Yes they are very picky eaters and will throw the food to get at what they want. They will drink from a water bottle you just need to prep it a bit first by tapping the bottom so it has a drop of water. Wet the very bottom also. After doing it a few times over a few days they will learn how to drink from it. Mite treatment can be tricky. I spray down bedding and have a ramp with a washcloth which they are forced to go through. The 1 ivermectin to 5 water on the wet washcloth rubs there backs as they pass through and has worked great at almost completely eliminating mites. If you can still hold them without them jumping you won't need to do the tube thing. They love to dig so you may want to get a clear gallon bucket filled with Natural grass. A shovel fills it about half way allowing them to dig without throwing to much out . They will eat the grass and roots making tunnels as they go inside the bucket. It makes cleaning the cage much easier simply replace the grass every 2 weeks.

    Bear in mind the mouse pee can only be broken down my ammonia/urea/nitrogenous bacteria which sometimes can be cyanobacteria which lead to carbon dioxide (and other gases) building up so u do need to aerate the soil frequently. Also springtails will only be in the moist areas of the habitat so to increase the moisture taken in by the soil you could add sphagnum moss maybe? Still spot clean because mould builds up in moist environments and can produce carbon dioxide. Also the springtails will only break down waste into smaller parts, without the bacteria and other microorganisms that break down waste the waste will never fully leave the ecosystem. I hope this is helpful :)

    • @Emiology
      @Emiology  Рік тому +1

      Yep! It’s one of the reasons I’m not interested in doing a bioactive for my rats right now as they produce so much ammonia, luckily harvest mice produce very very little. I’ve put some spagnum moss in the humid hide that’s under the platform, just waiting a few weeks for the bio material to build up before adding in larger CUC 😊

    Not sure if your spingtails will survive long term in such a dry environment. Deffinitely don't get darkling beetles, they are a wasp in the ass to get rid of. Isopods are great because they don't dig so deep (so the mice can easier feed on them) and you can easily exterminate them - together with springtails - by keeping the enclosure dry. The water bottle with a ball might be still too large for them. I had african pygmy mice and they weren't able to use it. I would say you need one with capillary hole...

      Many people have success with keeping springtails as clean up crew for rats and mice in soil that isn’t soaking wet so I have hope! I will add a section that is kept more humid for them if I struggle with keeping up the numbers, something I’ve had to do in my more arid reptile tanks 😊

      @@Emiology Yeah, I was struggling with keeping the humidity just right for both mice and springtails

    I did this but added hay on the top of the soil and it began to smell over time and some parts locked in moisture and looked like it might me moulding. I also didn’t have a “clean up crew” but just spot cleaned where I could. I’m cleaning it out.
    Do you think it would be better without the hay and with a clean up crew? Would you ever need to clean them out after this?

    Hey Comment Section. So I just got a scam reply on my original comment claiming to be Emi. Report these people if you get one and be safe. Really wish UA-cam would do something about these scammers. They’re so obvious!

      I think it’s brave if you to realise that you don’t have the time for them anymore, if you go ahead and find someone willing to take them she may be more willing for them to go to a new home
