But what is mastering is it like calibrating a robot?

No calibration and mastering are two different things. Mastering is like telling the robot where is his reference point (so you align robot's axes to the whitness marks on the robot and then master the robot). Each axis has a pulse encoder which generates different outputs (integer numbers) based on that axis position. With mastering you are saying to the robot - hey if the encoder gives me, for example, the value 20300 it means I'm at reference position with that axis. So with this the robot can know if it is moving in the plus or minus direction.
Robot calibration is a method of increasing the robot accuracy and it is usually done after the mastering process.
