- This video tells you how to install a spindle on your CNC router. In this video, we are installing a spindle on the Longmill MK2 from PwnCNC (link to their website below).
Welcome to our comprehensive step-by-step guide on upgrading your CNC router with a high-performance spindle! If you're considering switching from a trim router to a spindle, in this video, we're walking you through the entire process of installing a spindle on the LongMill MK2 CNC router. In this case, we are installing a water-cooled spindle as opposed to an air-cooled spindle.
Spindle kits from PwnCNC are available for Onefinity, Longmill, Millright, Shapeoko, CNC4Newbies, Xcarve and a few other CNC routers
The only difference between air and water-cooled spindles is the noise they put out.

Perfect timing!!!! I'm waiting on delivery of my PWNCNC Spindle right now!!!! Thanks for this video and guide!!! IDC Rocks!!!!!!
timboone4755, right on brother! I am excited for you to get rocking and rolling.
Great video... as always!!
☆☆ Concerning the PwnCNC Plug and Play VFD-Enclosure/Spindle System for the Longmill ☆☆
One person I'd like to give credit to is Joe Lazzara. He ordered a PwnCNC VFD-Enclosure/Spindle System for his Longmill and once it arrived we realized that the Longboard uses a digital output signal vs analog. Joe worked with the PwnCNC support team as we came up with a solution. Fortunately we finally received a Longboard, worked out a digital to analog converter, designed a neat (JOE LIKES NEAT!!!) little 3d printed case and got everything figured out in the Universal G-Code Sender. This would have been a lot harder without someone with a actual machine setup and being real world tested in real time. Joe was a huge help and has become a great friends to PwnCNC and myself personally!! ~ Clinton ~
Thanks Clinton!! I am so happy that I was able to be a part of this and to have helped you guys.
It was very exciting, and you guys took the time and made the effort to really make the spindle work the way I wanted it to and that it was working properly. I love the fact you, Daniel and I were on the same page!!
We worked pretty extensively together to make this happen with a lot of phone and video calls.
Now, all Longmill owners can add this spindle to their machines and carve with some peace and quiet lol.
I am truly grateful for everything you guys do for the Longmill and CNC Community, and I'm so happy that we've all become friends.
You guys are all fantastic and go above and beyond to make this hobby so much more enjoyable.
Thank you again.
Clinton, glad you liked this one brother! Happy CNCing.
Great video! Your vocabulary choices are helpful and the descriptions so how helpful you to incourage others. The camera individual is doing an excellent job. Thank you!
woodieaz, thank you! I'm glad the video has been helpful and Adam (our camera man) is excellent! I will pass along the compliments to him too! Happy cncing!
Great job, Garrett! IDC Woodcraft makes the best video experience. I especially appreciate showing the mistakes that I need to avoid.
user-ly9mz1jy4r, glad to hear this one helped you brother!
Thanks Garrett for the well explanation video. This came at the right time as i've been wanting to upgrade my cnc. Look forward to all your content.
ronnorris1504, you are so welcome brother! Congrats on wanting to upgrade your CNC and I am so happy to hear this video helped you.
Well explained. I've always enjoyed your videos. I have a spindle on my CNC machine. I sure could have used this when I installed it. See you tomorrow night on the live event. 😂
theyardsalellc6092, glad you liked this one my friend. See you Wednesday!
Nice step by step upgrade video.
richardwilliams5520, Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Happy CNCing.
Very helpful, I don't have a LongMill and didn't choose the liquid cooling model. I already have the PwnCNC spindle. I am waiting for larger 80MM mount for my CNC. But, can use several ideas from the video. I have been successful with tramming my Makita with a framing square, but think I will make the tramming tool you are using.
jimpalmer1944, glad to hear you are already set up with your new Spindle brother! I am excited for you to get your spindle mount.
@IDCWoodcraft your videos are so detailed and well presented. Excellent work!
stevestofiel3521, thanks brother! Glad you liked this one.
I love the organic content it gives one a good idea of what to expect when upgrading. I am wondering about dust collection and how will speeds and feeds vary for tooling if upgrading from Makita. ...will I need to reinstall all my tool data?
Mike, thanks brother I'm glad you enjoyed it! If you end up deciding to upgrade, you won't need to change the database perse, but I recommend downloading the IDC Woodcraft app and then you'll be able to adjust the setting (router/spindle and material) for your projects to be more accurate. This way you'll be able to tweak the numbers as needed!

I mounted my VFD under the table and rerouted the control panel using a flexible CAT5 cable and 3D printed a mount (PwnCNC has a model) for the control board
hamanjam, that sounds like a solid setup brother! Happy CNCing.
Love the in depth detail... Thanks..
rogerbishop3165, you are so welcome brother! Happy CNCing.
Thanks for the video Garrett. When the motor is consuming power holding the spindle in place, will this cause the motor to wear out faster than when using a trim router?
Hey ssdd. No, it will not affect the motor life
Thanks Garrett. Extremely informative as always. Question, do you happen to know what Muscle Chuck will fit the 65 and 80mm spindle?
cablsurfin, you're so welcome! I don't have a Muscle Chuck for this one as of yet brother but I'll keep you in the loop if anything changes!
I didn't like using windshield washer solution so I went back temporarily to distilled water until I found a alternative. Within a month I didn't have freezing problems but I did start to have alge buildup in the lines. I thought I had a sealed bucket system but I did get some sawdust which apparently started to grow and restrict water flow. I did put a flow meter which made it obvious I was losing flow. I prefer my pump to run all the time so I could see right away. I went back to windshield washer solution and I just make sure the dogs cant get to any spills
If you put a piece of copper in the water it will never grow algae. FYI.
hamanjam, good points brother! Glad to hear you found the right fluid that works for you.
Hi Garrett, couldn't you shim the mounting brackets under your siderails to accomplish the same result?
Rick, you're absolutely right you definitely could do this too!
Another great video!! Looking to upgrade to this spindle. Do you have a muscle 💪🏽 chuck for these spindles? I’m assuming the makita collet is different?
Marcus, it's an awesome upgrade! But, unfortunately I don't have a Muscle Chuck for the spindle as of yet! I'll keep you in the loop if anything changes though brother!
Informative video. I do have a question; Will the Pwn spindle (220v) work with Sienci's "new" Super Longboard??
bradkizer9961, not 100% sure on that one brother! That machine is so new I haven't had a chance to get my hands on one and let it rip!
Hi Garrett, I bought the Longmill mk2 on your recommendation and it came with the 65mm Makita router. I want to upgrade to the 1.5kw 65mm spindle. Do you think I can use my existing magnetic dustboot and use my existing mounting bracket for the new spindle. PWN did not have any info on the fit.
ricktanguay, that is a tricky one to answer over comments brother. Depending upon the design of the dust boot you may still be able to use it. Your best bet is to reach out to PWNCNC to determine if it will still work with the new spindle you are considering. Here is a link to reach out: support.pwncnc.com/new/?ref=idcwoodcraft
Quick question if your spindle doesn't have a step how would I judge install heights for my spindle is there a correct way to do this?
barryhenry5928, so glad to hear you liked this one brother!
When upgrading to a spindle router, do you need to upgrade your stepper motors to handle the added weight of the spindle?
roberthunt3106, that depends on your machine brother! Your best bet is to reach out to your machine manufacture on that one!
Thanks for the video.
bkgoddard, you are so welcome my friend.
Does my settings in Vetric regarding spindle speeds now get added to the G Code and my spindle runs at the speed that was set when I picked my bit?
Your tool database is fine. What you will want to do is update your post processor to include a delay. Find the line where your post processor sets the speed. You'll see is as "S" and your RPM along with a "M3" which sets the rotation to clockwise. You'll want to add a "G4P" command and how many seconds you want to delay. I found that 4 seconds is usually enough so I would add "G4P4" to the end of the speed command in thr post processor. If you're using gSender, there is an option to add a delay if it doesn't exist but they add G4P1 which means a 1 second delay which may not be enough
bkgoddard, the response from hamanjam is completely correct brother! You will need to set up your post processor for things to work properly. If you are having troubles, it is best that you reach out to your machine manufacturer regarding the best way to do this.
Great video on adding a spindle.
I would recommend pulling the slack out of the return line that is connected to the brass fitting so that when the lid is replaced, it doesn't have the possibility of kinking the hose. See it a lot on aquarium setups.
When I tram, I use old feeler gauges and leave the correct one in place.
stevekinnaird6835, great call brother. I appreciate all the tips and tricks.
I would not use the Teflon tape on the water pump. It is not needed
prometheus7504, thanks for sharing your insight and experience on this one brother! I think that's a very fair point!
Beware, the VFD should be as far as possible from your CNC control electronics because it produces LOTS of EMIs that will mess with your control board and stepper motors. The spot you've chosen is actually not good at all when you take that into account.
meeloo0, good point brother! EMI is an important consideration on this one. I will look for a better spot on my table.
my tax return....
seannalexander, haha good one brother!
I am about to order from pwncnc. Thinking 1.5 kw 80mm for the er20 collet.
shughes599, right on brother! I am excited for you to pick up your spindle.
Would be useful to add a visual flow indicator just in case the pump stops working. Don't ask me why i know 🙂
I will be adding that very soon. Thank you for suggesting it
Where does the upgraded plate come from?
They will come with your order.
Garrett, When you make the settings needed on the vfd and in gsender, do you have to repeat those entries on every project or is all that stored and project files get added to what you the changes you made to gsender? hope that makes sense?
vb5457, I have a video that should really help you narrow down your CNC choice. It will really help you determine what to look for when buying a CNC. Here is a link: ua-cam.com/video/wLVNF0L-ZdU/v-deo.html
Thank you thank you thank you!!!!
Ryan, you're so welcome brother! Happy cncing!
That's a fun upgrade you did there. Did you get a spindle that is compatible with ATC collars?
mrwonk, not 100% sure on that one brother! Your best bet is to reach out to the Spindle company like PWNCNC on that one. They should be able to suggest a spindle that fits your ATC needs.
@@IDCWoodcraftOh, I was just curious if you got the upgrade on your spindle. That is one of the big advantages in the spindle upgrade is being to have the tool auto-change happen so you can program the entire job with multiple bits upfront and let the machine handle the change-over (or so it appears to someone learning before I buy my CNC) :)
Greate video !
rmp3499, glad you liked this one my friend.
great video
Jim, thanks brother!
I added a simple flow indicator to my tubes where I can see it so I know the fluid is flowing. It is a paddle wheel I got from Amazon and fits into the tubing.
Joe, that sounds like an awesome attachment brother! I'll have to look into!
Very holistic guide. Good job and thanks for your effort.
gibmirschnell, thanks brother! I'm glad it was helpful!
Seems to be a good kit. Some CNC controllers are a bit more complicated. Most spindles you can get the manufacturer to setup the cables to the length you need.
I'm not sure I would use a pond pump and bucket as a way to dissipate heat since the buckets heat dissipation qualities are horrible at best. The laser industry tried this as a cheap alternative and found out it just burned up equipment. The goal of the coolant is to cool the motor and if the heat is contained and just circulated your not cooling but slowly heating depending on workload. The heat in the bucket will continue to rise until its too hot. There is also from what I could see no loss of flow sensor. A simple cheap CW3000 properly cools as its a radiator with a flow sensor, it does of course cost more. You have to wire the flow sensor into a motor stop function so you don't burn up your spindle if the $15 pond pump packs it in.
I cannot find any supporting information on using windshield washer fluid, that has methanol in it typically. All the manufacturers I checked recommend automotive antifreeze and distilled water. I did find a couple of non cnc forums when it was mentioned by 2 or 3 people, not sure that's evidence of a good plan. I also noticed one person stating it had to be replaced every 30-45 days. It does have methanol in it so that will evaporate off in a non closed loop system and then you have blue water.
Personally I go for simple as its got less working parts meaning less things to fail. Water cooled clearly has freezing, pumps, proper cooling like cw3000 etc all to add to the things that can fail. I would recommend anyone installing water cooling to add a $30 flow switch. This way if the pump fails and it will you only need $15 and not $500. Of of course if one forgets to turn on the pump the spindle will not start with no flow.
Personally on a smaller machine water cooling can be a problem as there is many more parts that can fail and cause more expensive repairs. Larger machines are different as they have things like redundant pumps, filtration and full chillers (not a bucket or simple radiator) to maintain motor temps. They do say Air cooled is more powerful but I'm not sure why. Water cooled is quieter.
Shimming I found is easier with aluminum business cards from Amazon or something, they are thin and not as compressible as paper. Paper also further compresses over time with environmental changes. Scissors cut the card easy just try not to deform it to bad.
3dtwerking324, thanks for sharing your insights on this one brother. I know it will certainly help out our cnc brothers and sisters considering a spindle in the future!
