M. R. James was a master storyteller, and your reading of this story is excellent! Once again, I have to comment on how happy it makes me when I hear you say, "You fool! Warren is dead!" I always know a really good story is coming
The announcement you fool Warren is dead is borrowed from something or another from the darkest of the hillside thickets. A little Canadian band his music may find entertaining
@SpookyGroovyPolitoCatMum The quote is from "The Statement of Randolph Carter " by H. P. Lovecraft, an excellent story as all his stories are! I looked up the song, Warren Is Dead!" by the Dukes of Al-Hazred. I think it's the one you were referring to. Pretty darned good!
Oh wonderful...a favourite M R James! And the superb black & white Jacques Tourneur reimagining - Night of the Demon - is my absolute favourite horror film .
I remember reading this tale shortly after watching the film, "Night of the Demon." Both gave me a feeling of "unease." To me, this story is a cautionary tale which renders the message, "Do not dabble in alchemy."
The british version of night of the demon was a little more extensive and informative than the american version. I highly recommend the british version.
M.R. James is a cut above nearly all other authors you have narrated, and one of my all time favorites. His horror tales can still paint pictures in your mind that resonate perfectly with our contemporary conditioning. Absolutely terrifying content! Thank you for this.
I love this M.R James story! Thank you Ian and crew for what I know will be an excellent rendition of this amazing classic tale. I will be saving this for my pre-bedtime relaxation period. I've been on an E.F. Benson and M.R. James binge for a few days now, so this is great timing! Thank you! I hope that you and your family are well! ❤
@@bonelessbeserkerbergthora1493 The film is called "Night of the Demon" , as mentioned . In the credits it says the film is based on "Casting the Runes" by M. R . James .
Ten: For while Carter had slumbered under the baleful influence of that dreadful book and in some strange manner which he would never entirely fathom, all the items which he had purchased from Horror Babble Enterprises in dream; so recklessly and with such abandon, so careless too of their cost; somnambulant and involuntary though those purchases had been; they had all in some way incomprehensible to him also been transactions in the real and tangible world. His cheque book was empty and spent, his bank account was exhausted and all the things which he had bought during his night’s delirium had been mysteriously delivered into his solitary abode by an unknown agency, cold, silent and implacable.
A great reading. I've always been partial to the Michael Hordern reading, whom I generally think of with James, it being my introduction to him in narration.
I wanted to listen to some of HorrorBabble’s M.R. James readings yesterday, An Evening’s Entertainment and The Rats in particular. And I saw this released the same day. A happy synchronicity 😊
“Over the valley’s rim a wan, waning crescent moon peered through the noisome vapours that seemed to emanate from unheard-of catacombs…..” Keep up the good work and, as always, stay safe!
Absolutely fantastic 😎I never get remotely tired of MR James.I am reading yet again the collected ghost stories.A wonderful collection of his short stories ❤
For sheer creepy perfection, this and The Mezzotint are a tie. A couple of his other stories are a little more ambiguous like Martin’s Close or a little more grotesque like The Ash-tree. Depends on your personal fancy.
I thought "Greg Wagland" sounded familiar. Of course, I follow his channel. And I realize when listening that I have heard his version. Greg's Sherlock Stories and Horrorbabble's Cuthulu Mythos are my comfort listening.
The CBS Radio Mystery Theater did an episode entitled The Sending that borrowed a lot from this story. I believe they did another that I think also borrowed from it, but the name of that one escapes me.
I just adore ur channel and u pick the best stories and most of all ur voice. This might sound a little odd but I listen to ur stories as I fall asleep. Have u ever considered a side channel doing non horror sleep stories or guided meditations for insomniacs such as myself? 😊Nevertheless I love and appreciate ur fantastic channel!
I realized partway through that this was actually made into a movie, called Curse of the Demon. But the story was changed enough to probably not give the author any credit.
Hi Ian' my story teller my friend my mutual fan of the macabre and most most of all the person who gave me van h..with my opinion is better than any lv craft or m r James story and even may I say James Herbert!!
