✏️ The Sons of Horus, Amset, Hapi, Duamutef and Kebehsenuf according to ancient Egyptian religion, are the four sons of the god Horus. They protected the internal organs removed from the body during mummification and placed in canopic jars in the tomb, and they themselves were protected by four goddesses. They are first mentioned in the Pyramid Texts, where they assist the spirit of the deceased ruler in ascending to the sky. The four gods were known as "Spirits of Horus," "Sons of Osiris," and "Friends of the King."
The lids of the four canopic jars, which were under the protection of the four gods, were initially carved in the shape of human heads. From the time of the 18th dynasty, however, they depicted the heads of these four gods (Amset - or Imshty - human, Hapi monkey, Duamutef jackal, Kebehsenuf falcon-headed deity). They were often depicted on the sides of the chest holding the canopic jars, where they were also associated with the four cardinal directions. They could also appear on the sides of the sarcophagus or coffin, with Amset and Duamutef on the east side, and Hapi and Kebehsenuf on the western side. During the Third Intermediate Period, when instead of placing organs in canopic jars, the embalmed body parts were placed back into the body, amulets representing the four deities were placed alongside them. Later, similar amulets were sewn onto the wrapped mummy's side. Towards the end of the New Kingdom, they were also depicted as star deities.
