I used mine paired with a half wave dipole antenna cut for just above 15000 cps, just to listen to Radio Tahiti! ... Now, Tahiti blasts in over the internet like a local station.
I had one 30 years ago when i was an addicted (ham bands) SWL, wish i'd never sold it but found another one on eBay today. It will NEVER be sold. Nice Video Terry :) Jeff M1BCM
Another DX-302 owner here, bought mine new from a RS store near Marsh Lane in Farmers Branch TX (near Dallas) back in the 80's ... still use it today too! I put in a wider IF filter too, it sounds great in AM Mode now on the AM BCB ... the 455 kHz filter was a 'mechanical' filter I removed from an old Motorola 2-way radio back then, an old Motrac or some such at the time.
Nice radio, I bought one using my discount when I worked at a Radio Shack when this radio was just released. Had it about 8 or 10 years and sold it to upgrade to something newer but kind of wished I would have kept it in the collection now. Worked very well. Was fun to see again here. Nice video. 73 wd0akx
I had that model SW radio, and also the predecessor the DX-160. I still have the DX-160, but sold the DX-302 to a friend a long while back. I liked the DX-160 better back then.
+Pete Ciallella Hello, I agree. I also had many of the DX series receivers. I settled on the DX-150B. It seems to be the most stable of them all. Wish it had a built in speaker
I picked up a DX300 a while back. Does not receive and the display has gone out. Has a bad unobtainable M54826P. One day I may drag it out and see if I can make something to replace it. Thanks for another great video Terry.
Yes, I heard about that IC. I have a DX-300 also that receives, but the variable LEDS are out. The Mhz digit is working. The receiver's cosmetics are not the best, so I will keep it around as a hanger queen.
Thanks for the video. I just bought a used one for my little boy who's showing an interest in radio and looking for something like this to allow him to tune into the world. Uhf and Vhf are dead here so this is the way to go.
It was their top of the line. In addition to the DX300. They had the DX-100 and DX-200. The DX-200 was similar to the 300 except it had an analog dial.
Terry, I had one of those because I love red LEDs, but one thing after another started going bad on the radio. When half of several LEDs went bad, I sold it for parts. I am no longer in love with that model!
My collection consists of a Dx- 100, 150B, 160, 200, 300, 302, and 394...Can ya guess which one sits near my bed...I'm not crazy about the 100 or the 200 simply because of how they were made...But I like both the 300 and 302...Love how they look and how they do work because of the digital readout...My 300 has been modified and can not receive the lower end of the Medium wave band. so it gives way to the 302, but each a good rig...Great video and enjoyed viewing...73's
Yes, I agree. The other issue I find is backlash in the tuning knob. I wish they had put a little more money into that feature with a weighted knob. As a kid, I admired this receiver. They were way to much $$ for me.
My first digital readout receiver was the 302's predecessor, the '300'. Shelled out $300.00 in 1980, very disappointed with the receiver overall, thankfully I kept my "Frog 7". A year later dumped the '300' for a NRD 505 (like going from a Trabant to a BMW), what a difference in both cost and performance. Been out of the hobby since '00' or so, kinda of toying with the idea of returning, though I sold my R5000 and 535 in '02'.
+cameraman655 You are correct, they were not the best. Good looking radio, caught the eye of many. If you decide to get back into the listening hobby, I have many nice receivers here.
HA! An Eton portable will do the same today for $150! All short wave receivers do the same thing. Different models of course, & the tabletop rcvrs of today are far better than that Realistic. But the one thing in common they all have, is that u MUST have the proper antenna to back it up. With an optimum antenna mounted as high as possible comes optimum performance. This is true w/ tabletops or portables.
Haha, I never saw that in the video, good observation. That is a reflection from the Johnson Viking II's function meter. Your right, it really looks like it is installed into the back of the D-104!
Thanks for the video, got my off ebay it look like it was never used as it said on auction. But no room in my apartment to set it up and will need some type of antenna. From my understanding it needs to warmup before working good, is that right?
I have a question, I've been having trouble with my Fender 75 amp it makes this noise like the filter capacitors have gone out or leaky or going out of order you placed them but it still makes the same noise I was poking around with a plastic Chopstick and found out that the wires going to the trouble pot are microphonic and I looked at the solder connections to the eyelet board and is a good connection do you know what this means or any solution or ideas that I could do to fix this problem
D-lab Electronics well I've cleaned the I've clean the tube sockets and check the pins and figure it out it's one of the preamp tube sockets messing up it appears that at least two to three wires from the socket go to the board and make the board microphonic
They had plenty of good products. The sale price when the items were on promotion were always a good value. I have many items that have lasted decades working perfectly and excellently. My DX-392 has been with me since 1992 and plays every day. Was my wake up radio for probably 15 years. It's really a Sangean and is one of my most prized possessions. I always think what very few items would I keep? My two bass guitars and my Peavey T-Max, my DX-392, STA-2380, STA-860 and Mach-III's, my RS FET 22-220A VTVM are on my shortlist.
I used one of these for many years while studying for my amateur radio license. In retrospect, the DX-302 is a poor receiver. It drifts badly; so badly that copying cw is literally a two-hand exercise, one for the pencil, one for the tuning knob. The filter skirts in SSB and cw are wide; too wide by far in cw. You must constantly fiddle the preselector knob to achieve the best sensitivity for a given band. Despite claims to the contrary, it is *not* a PLL receiver. If you are a SWL or potential SWL you deserve better. Try to find a used Icom, Yaesu, Heathkit ... there are a lot of good shortwave receivers out there. Don't bother with the DX-302.
Anyone had problems with the reported problem of frequency drift with this RX'r ? These are said to be drift monsters. I've been looking at them here lately on eBay & at hamfests, but I'm hesitant to buy.
I still have the one I bought circa 1981 and I count it as my best receiver of the ones I have to this day. I am sooo glad i kept it.
I have one I bought new in 1980. I still use it and it works great. Good rig
Had one of these back-in-the-day. Had it for years. Used it a lot. Loved it.
I used mine paired with a half wave dipole antenna cut for just above 15000 cps, just to listen to Radio Tahiti! ... Now, Tahiti blasts in over the internet like a local station.
I bought one in 1982 and still have it. I like it.
Excellent! I have one. I bought it brand new in 1980 and still use it
Interesting that reviews now of this receiver are so positive, a 180 degree turn from
reviews when it was being sold.
I really liked your video. You covered all the bases. I have 3 of these, one from 1981 with about 50000 hours on it. It still works.
I had one 30 years ago when i was an addicted (ham bands) SWL, wish i'd never sold it but found another one on eBay today. It will NEVER be sold. Nice Video Terry :)

love the nabe net and the arrl cw bulletin nice sound and good filtering
I remember hooking mine to a telex decoder and CRT ... fun times :D
I got one off of eBay and it's a great radio!I spent most of this evening listening to the hams on 40 meters.
I got one of these second hand in 87. Also had the valve Trio JR 300s
I picked up a DX300 a while back. Does not receive and the display has gone out. Has a bad unobtainable M54826P. One day I may drag it out and see if I can make something to replace it. Thanks for another great video Terry.

The Radio Shop I have one that does not change freq when the center dial is turned. any ideas?
Thanks for the video. I just bought a used one for my little boy who's showing an interest in radio and looking for something like this to allow him to tune into the world. Uhf and Vhf are dead here so this is the way to go.
I never remembered this radio being available at Radio Shack in the 1980's, at least not in Canada
It was their top of the line. In addition to the DX300. They had the DX-100 and DX-200. The DX-200 was similar to the 300 except it had an analog dial.
I'm sorry I meant DX-302.
Just bought one sealed in box for 120 bucks........Estate sale...works excellent
Thats a great price for NOS.
Yes, I admired them as a kid. No money back then.
Now I have too many radios!
I have a DX-300 and a DX-302 but they both have issues. I'd like to find someplace where I could get them restored and working again.
hi,Realistic dx 302 receiver just great i have one myself.73s from n.ireland.
Terry, I had one of those because I love red LEDs, but one thing after another started going bad on the radio. When half of several LEDs went bad, I sold it for parts. I am no longer in love with that model!
Weird ?

THIS is the one I wanted but they were out of production. Ended up getting a DX-360. Never was really happy with it.
Not a bad RX. Used them for a while and for the money a good value. Get the 302 and not the 300, the 300 had a "Birdy" problem.
Yes, I agree. The other issue I find is backlash in the tuning knob. I wish they had put a little more money into that feature with a weighted knob. As a kid, I admired this receiver. They were way to much $$ for me.
I keep my gain on max like the owner's manual recommends. Seems to receive better that way.
Question: Does the S-meter function in SSB reception mode ? Didn't seem to be moving at all on what appeared to be SSB reception.
The RF gain was turned down.
If you had to choose between the Grundig 750 / Realistic DX 302 or 300, which one is the better radio
My first digital readout receiver was the 302's predecessor, the '300'. Shelled out $300.00 in 1980, very disappointed with the receiver overall, thankfully I kept my "Frog 7". I had the 302 and my neighbor had the Yaesu and the DX-302 was a much better receiver. The 302 last a long time.
i remember mine with the larger than average, great sounding speaker
Would this receive signals without an external Antenna hook up?
Nice video. I have one of these but not near as clean as your.
Thanks for sharing,
Tom
Looks kind of like the yasue. Can't remember the model number though.

nice radio!
Does this receiver cover the 2 meter band or air band?
what antenna can i use with the receiver
Looking at this old video I saw a d104 with a meter installed on the back of the head assy Can you tell me a little more about itThanks Keith N9QDS
Haha, I never saw that in the video, good observation. That is a reflection from the Johnson Viking II's function meter. Your right, it really looks like it is installed into the back of the D-104!
Would you suggest any Double-Radio
Thanks for the video, got my off ebay it look like it was never used as it said on auction. But no room in my apartment to set it up and will need some type of antenna. From my understanding it needs to warmup before working good, is that right?
It tends to drift slightly until warmed up.
Impressive receiver. What kind of antenna(s) are you using with this? Height of antenna? Photos? 73s to you!
Will the tuning still work without the digital display working ?
I found one, still worth having?
Your receive is very quiet. Very low noise. What type of antenna are you running?
What are u using for a antenna thanks
What Antenna did you use for that receiver in this video
80 meter inverted V up 45 feet

Have you inspected the preamp tube sockets. Many times I find corrosion or deformed pins causing these symptoms.
D-lab Electronics well I've cleaned the I've clean the tube sockets and check the pins and figure it out it's one of the preamp tube sockets messing up it appears that at least two to three wires from the socket go to the board and make the board microphonic
Cool deal, make sure to install good quality replacements like Belton 9 pinners. I have great luck with them
In my experience most Radio Shack items were aptly named- "Realistic" since they behaved more like toys.
They had plenty of good products. The sale price when the items were on promotion were always a good value. I have many items that have lasted decades working perfectly and excellently. Que antena puedo usar con el receptor?
Hes I just bought one it’s like new , butwhzt to do for a antenna is the problem I have the proper wire and insulators but that’s it .
I want one!
Do I need an antenna to use this? Also, if someone could tell me why my unit is only showing MHz settings and not any kHz, that'd be great
Did u ever get an answer 2 ur question ? ...i want 2 know also
Would you expect to pick up radio signals off the air without an antenna? Of course you'd need an antenna.
Seems one of the best receivers at that time, but is no longer working now.
will this radio work for 2 meter and 70cm radio communications. Thanks
No it wont, its from 10 Khz up to 30 Mhz only.
considering an icom desk top receiver saw a dx 302 on ebay. already have a reaistic hand held 2 meter walkie talkie
Anyone had problems with the reported problem of frequency drift with this RX'r ? These are said to be drift monsters. I've been looking at them here lately on eBay & at hamfests, but I'm hesitant to buy.
I'm saving up my money to buy the DX302 so I can listen to morse code and japanese broadcasts.
Did you like my joke?
Nice video. 73. M6WBW
I'd like to buy one! anybody got one for sale?
Try E-Bay. That's where I got mine.
One of these would be great if I could understand 15 languages :)
WANT TO SELL IT
Ohhhhh WoW! A Very Nice Radio! FROM WA1LYT Meriden, Connecticut 06450 USA
+Tom Coss Thanks Tom, I used to drool over them back when Radio Shack carried the model. They were 399.00 back in the early 80's! Lots of $$ back then
Tom's not far away.
