OLDEST Piglets I Have Ever Tried to Castrate
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 жов 2024
- In this video, we take on the task of castrating 8 week old piglets we purchased. I usually castrate within the first week of farrowing. My process that I normally use is not going to work on piglets this size. We have to figure out a different way.

Hello neighbors! wasn't aware you lived as close as you do until last week when I was out riding. Glad I found your channel and the ways of homesteading in our area. Its much different than others you find on you tube.
Oh man, poor pigs 🤣
They actually don't look like they are in too much pain, that was pretty cool to watch 👍
Growing up we always cut the boars after they were weened. Was also easy and fast with a sharp knife and hanging the piglets head down over the fence at their hips. Once they were worked we just let go of their legs and they'd drop right down into the pen. Seeing your whole family participating brought back some great memories.
I agree that how I learned it in Ag dept in school many years ago and we done plenty that way.
I saw a couple of videos where they do it after a couple of days, the idea is that the mothers milk helps them heal faster and helps minimize any infection.
I grew up raising feeder pigs. Watched my dad castorate many many pigs. We use to do at 4 weeks. I’d catch and dad would hang them upside down between 2 2x4’s on wall with a little rope noose on each hind leg and a bungee cord across belly to hold them in place. Worked great.
Thanks for bringing back some good memories of dad.
The piglets are so strong, shiny, healthy and promising.
Good job there.
Troy you can make this much easier if you would have gotten in where the pigs are and had help swing them over the top board in the corner and push the hind legs back towards the body which will cause the nuts to protrude out very easy we’ve done some very large pigs that way
Our first pigs were weaners for a wedding present! One boar & one sow. The boar wasn’t cut but I thought since we were butchering him at 6 months the meat would be OK 😖 It was HORRIBLE (actually tasted ok, but the smell while cooking was intolerable). I had my husband cook all of it on the BBQ 👍
Troy I agree with you 100%, used to raise pigs and we used to dress our pigs at a week old even then they are strong little buggers. Stuck the front shoulders between your knees and pulled the back legs down to stretch the skin tight and the other person did the removal.
My bride always did this job as I couldn't wield a scalpel safely while cringing with my legs crossed so tightly 😂 And don't forget the oysters! Breaded and fried! Mmmm
Thank you Ferymach. Teacher. Invormasi yang besmanfaat. Sukses selalu.
Always great information!
This last litter I did it a 7 days old. I'll never go back to waiting longer. It was far more pleasant for all than when older. The only issue is ensuring momma can't interfere (hurt you) rounding up the piglets. But otherwise everything was FAR easier.
I wish I knew the nitty gritty of this greenhouse's construction. The materials, depth of fence and roof. It's all nice.
There is a video detailing it on our channel. Got to go back about 4 years
Nice job and it worked well, and pigs did not suffer , an was fast,
I sure good seeing you guys. Haven't seen your vlogs for long time hope all are well.
We release a video every Sunday. Thanks for watching!
I also live in Southern WV where do you get your pig feed from?
Hi, Troy. I certainly didn't envy you having to castrate pigs that big though everything seemed to go well. At the end of our pig raising days we were able to do them at three days, down from eight weeks when we first started raising pigs!
A cotton glove helps with the squeeze and pull hand.
Good lord! I thought I was ready to go get some piglets to clear brush and help with breakfast. But if I have to squeeze their nads out through a little cut and just yoink them loose like leaves from a gutter.... I dunno. I am sympathizing WAY too much with the pigs. Watching that makes MY oysters hurt.😵💫
Great videos! Keep em coming!
The first time I'm sure I got a little pale. They were screaming loud enough to ring my ears! That's what made that bucket for their heads a great idea. Glad I subscribed.
We always had to use ear plugs ,they squeal so loud when caught up .
Also when cutting out wolf tusk .
Needed to see a close up of the procedure.
You sure made t look easy, Troy. Castrating is a must for feeder pigs. I once bought some chops from a local butcher to grill. Once I started to grill them, I started to smell something funny. Sure enough, it was from the boar taint. Went back to complain, and I was told I had bought the chops elsewhere. Not a funny situation. Guess where I buy my meat now. Yup, ELSEWHERE.
When I saw you getting the red wattle pigs I thought that was a breed you were going to keep. They do look like a nice breed.
Anyway, keep up the excellent work. And thank you for sharing! @Red Tool House - Homestead
I’m gonna have to try that method I usually wait to castrate once I catch them at winning time. Our process usually consist of my eight year old daughter sit ting on their belly holding their back legs tight and me doing the cutting sometimes don’t work as planned As you can imagine.
I was wondering why you don’t band them/ then I read through the comments and saw someone else asked. Thanks for the answer
I've only eaten one boar in my life and it did have a little boar taint. Enough to make me want to eliminate it. Oddly enough, it didn't effect the taste only the smell while cooking.
Better to hold the piglet upside down and hold the head and shoulders with your knees. Less squirming than the bucket method
They looked bigger at the beginning. Good work though, we do ours between 1-2 weeks depending when we are both available to do it. We tend to have mostly females born every time, last grouse was 7f, 3m. Less tonsonthst way too!
I have never seen somebody as a professional ball remover
YIKESS they didn't make a big deal about it I was surprised
Makes for a nice appetizer
helped castrate a 400 lb boar once.... we butchered it 2 months later and it was good.
I saw when you bought these Red wattles, I was wondering if you were going to show up dates on your Red waddle pigs? They're not all full blood Red wattles? If I'm not mistaken some are Red wattles and Duroc cross?
Nobody eats mountain oysters anymore. We always had an old man waiting with a pot in hand during castration time.
Brings back memories… when I first saw it done I was surprised that they weren’t cut off. Was told that it was better this way…just like you said it was “less bleeding.” He would take a piglet and throw it between his thighs, spray iodine, cut, pull, and spray again. I also had to hold a bigger one down while he did this and that memory is still pretty vivid… my arms and wrists were sore! I hope that kids back is ok! Take care!
Castrating at 3-10 days makes things easier on you and a lot less painful and stressful for the piglet. I do not know why people wait so long to castrate and notch ears. I try to convert people, but some are just stuck in that, we always did it this way mentality. It doesn't make it right. I don't see why people would want to cause discomfort to an animal because they always have. The big hog farm I worked at growing up we had this thing to hang the piglets in that worked really well. I did about 100 piglets a week or more there, and Tom had me do them at 3 days. I wish I could find that same hanger. I can't, but did find a different one from one of the hog equipment companies. I raise Red Wattles myself.
Did you Listen to what he said about why he did it to older piglets?
We make Barr Hogs out of wild caught boars. Just flip em, cut em, and kick em loose. I always assumed you had to wait for their testicles to drop before barring them.
Actually exactly how we do it at Roamin' Acres!
My uncles and papaw used to tell stories of when they was young and people would castrate pigs and pack salt and lard in the place of the testicles
I could hear them thar pigs all the way in Branchland, 🥸
Just curious… is there not a more humane method? Couldn’t you inject lidocaine?
I guess I need to do this...have 13 rt now born yesterday and 1 male from the 14th...what is the spray you are using? Thanks for sharing
Iodine spray
@@RedToolHouse thank you...is there anything else needed? Really enjoy your vids and your sharing of know how
Out of curiosity, do you need to apply anesthesia to the area and afterwards, do you need to put or inject antibiotics on those castrated pigs?
Remember doing this as a kid. Arms felt like noodles afterwards..
When people hunt wild boars, how do they deal with uncastrated males for meat, especially if they weigh nearly 1,000 pounds?
Oh man your a crack up Troy ahaha but very informative though 👌
I have 5 I have to castrate or should. But 2 are a yr & 3 that feeders, I think. Don't have any help, so they'll probably just be sold as is.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 we just did one to a 250lber…… I got kicked a few times trying to hold the legs out of the way
We do it at 7 weeks every time. Your help should be facing you holding the piglets with a knee in their belly while you cut. Much faster with more control.
some youtube channels are saying that breed or heritage breeds ...especially when pasture raised dont have the meat taint if left intact. Any thoughts on this?
yes, I butchered a 3 year old intact boar and we had no issues. Feed plays a part in that too.
@@RedToolHouse thanks for the reply. Either it will be fine or dog food! Awesome channel
Reminds of the one and only one time my brother in law had me try to place the pigs face into my crotch while he was doing the cutting pig tried to denut me . We laugh about it now😵💫
Band the nuts with a rubber band, they have kits that you buy with a thick rubber band and a special pliers
You can’t band pigs. They don’t have a scrotum that descends
@@RedToolHouse wow didn’t know that
It is hot here in Mississippi it is July someone said you can't castrate a pig in the summer? Is this true? Then what would we do? They are 8 weeks old and we need to do this. Please give us some advice can we castrate our pigs in july? And is there anything different we need to do?
I have never heard that before. I have castrate in the summer with no issues. Maybe the concern is them getting into a wallow shortly after cutting. If that is a concern keep them in a barn for 24 hours or so while they scab over
Gas sensor giveaway winner???
We announced it last week on our community tab
Might want to consider a tetanus shot 3-5 days before cutting them....do it that way for older bull calves
Try take out your eggs how you feel
Well in some European countries it’s outlawed to castrate so everyone just eats the boar meat, really no noticeable difference.
Yes, there is. Testosterone is not friendly to meat flavor.
No gloves! Geez
I don’t think so, you haven’t reached 50 yet have you?
No anesthetic? Bruh
daddy?
You don't have a clue what you are doing what if they wait 100
Not sure I even understand your comment
@@RedToolHouse Me neither!
I like the idea of putting them in the bucket! We’ve castrated that age and just had them on ground and was much more uncomfortable looking than this
