    Patrick, there you go again...making me want (yet another) worm bin. It hasn't been a year yet since I began worm farming. Valentine's Day will be a year. I have 2 towers, and a bus bin, and also a baby bin! Every time you show something new, I want one! I have thought for quite a while now that you needed another bin. I am beginning to think that it's time to count all my worms! I will be thinking of you at the time! Thank you for another wonderful video. I count on you to keep them coming. You're very good at it. Say hello to your wonderful wife!! God-bless you.

    This is the first time I've seen somebody set up a UWB using all cardboard/paper bedding instead of bags of compost, etc. With your micro shredder, I bet your first harvest will be fully processed. Never underestimate worms!

    I have two of those. They are my outdoor bins. They tend to have enough mass to keep from freezing through the winter. (but I till pack leaves around them in late fall just in case) It keeps the pests out of my outdoor bins. I will say that I made wood frames for both of them. The frame it comes with will work. . . Indoors. . . If you set it up and never ever move it again. . . But beyond that it doesn't hold up even with the straps.
    I run a bunch of plastic tubs inside for winter and then move all the leftovers to the outdoor bins for spring and summer. Two bins eats up the waste from a family of 5, though sometimes I think I should get a third.

    I've been vermicomposting for 30 years.
    I've never bought worms.(they just show up. They come for the food and stay for the warmth in February in MD.
    My bins are, on average, 135 degrees.
    I always use leaves.
    It's always outside.
    My worms consume tons'o'leaves, and when hot (and only when hot), the bins will consume an average amount of food waste, and the heat keeps the vermin out of the wormin.~
    I use 5 wooden pallets.
    1 on the bottom.
    4 to make a box.
    I fill it to overflowing
    I use a digging bar to Fluff (no heavy lifting, use the pallets as a fulcrum and "fluff" ) , especially when it's cold and rainy or snowy.
    The cold blasts of air make them breed more and eat more.
    I have finished compost from fall leaves ready for spring use.

      30 years!!! That's a ton of experience right there!! Sounds like your vermicompost is a "well oiled machine." I have a compost pile where I put my grass, garden scrpas and excess food scraps my worms can't eat, but I would love to set up a pallet system like yours. I've thought about starting a worm bin from all the compost worms I find in the bottom of my pile!! Nicely done. I put mine up on cement blocks. Makes it easier to put something under to collect castings. I quit using the bottom bag. I keep a plastic bin on the floor under the UWB. That way if I get the bin too moist it will drain out in to the plastic bin. I can see that and adjust accordingly. FWIW

      I love my VermiHut and I really love my Urban Worm Bag too!! But since you already have the VermiHut and don’t have to make a choice between the two, I say have both!! You’ll find that the UWB is huge compared to the VermiHut. It takes a long time to fill the UWB when you first start out and I don’t think I harvested my first harvest until 5 months later. But now I can harvest about 15 pounds every 30 days. I think the UWB is a natural progression upgrade after getting used to running a worm bin like the VermiHut. You will love how easy it is to run and the over all production…and you’ll be able to sift the castings with one of your VermiHut trays!! I hope this helps! I’m excited for you to get one!! I tried a couple of ways to bait out some worms of my other bins in order to wrangle up some for this Urban Worm Bag. Here is the video: ua-cam.com/video/ow2AM6-vmQs/v-deo.html basically put some juicy food and a little bit of bedding in a small container like the bottom of a Pringles can or breakfast oat cylindrical box and trim it down to a couple of inches. Sink it below the surface and check on it in 3-4 days. Not earlier or they won't be there and not too much later or they will have eaten the food and moved on. I hope this helps! I've actually been thinking about that, but I don't think I can resist aerating and taking a look at how they did with their last meals 😂 I won't be digging down real deep each feeding, just kind of the first 3-4 inches. I'll also probably just dig a small area in the center and drop the food in and bury it slightly with whats left in the bin along with some dry bedding on top...So far it seems to keep the moisture in pretty well. I should be doing videos with it every 7-10 days so more to come as I learn how it works over time!! Thanks so much for watching!! I'm interested to hear how your tray system is doing!!🪱🪱🪱

      Yes, that is the idea. It is a continuous flow bin. The first couple of harvests may contain some of that bedding material that I put down first, but after that it should be pretty good worm castings that I should be able to harvest every 3-4 weeks depending on how much the compost worm population grows!! I don’t think so. The design provides good air exchange and where I have it gets good airflow. I think the material it is made out of allows air through so I’ll have to watch the moisture level. The top surface area is pretty big relative to my other bins so there should be a lot of opportunity for air exchange there as well. Great question!! I'm surprised that the assembly instructions do not point out the slots, and the orientation that they need to be in, so that later the gusset straps can be installed. Luckily it was an easy thing to correct later. I'm kinda surprised that those straps are an optional accessory... considering the significant amount of extra rigidity they give a frame structure such as this. Since the frame for the VermiBag Mini that I have was a DIY creation, it does not have anything like that - but I can see the value in adding something similar some day (that is... if I ever get that thing up n' running again) :)

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Рік тому +1

      I opened the box for the first time when I started filming so I had that half a brain thing working for me 😂🤣😂 I actually caught that there was a little symbol showing which way the joints should be oriented when I put the top together, but didn't go back to check the bottom before I started with the straps. Had I taken an extra second to look at the joints it would have been obvious and the slots for the straps would have been aligned!! I guess I'm the dummy when they call something dummy proof!! From what I have heard in comments and forums is after a few years, the weight of the bag, or not being on a flat surface, caused some stress on the joints which broke, leading to them creating a solution for the issue. I believe I have version 2.0 and the users guide does a good job of addressing weight and non level surfaces but it is good to have the option for straps! Perhaps they'll be included in the future??!?? I would love, LoVe, LOVE to see the Vermibag Mini up and running again!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    • @A-V
      @A-V Рік тому +1

      A square is a fairly weak physical structure - so the addition of diagonal gusset straps is smart - preventing deformation of the sides from squares into equally weak (if not weaker) parallelograms. The hazards of such deformation is strain on the corner connectors, on the pipes, or on both... leading to bent pipes, busted corner connectors, or both. I'm kinda surprised they don't include the straps with the bags...
      I hear ya on the VermiBag Mini. It's been sitting idle for far longer than I ever thought it would :)

      I have the UWB 1.0. The corner pieces never cracked. I was able to unzip the zipper at harvest time by squirting water onto it, and using a gripping tool to pull that zipper open.
      With all the improvements that have been made (redesigned bottom section, taller frame), I suspect that the unit will be much easier to manage at harvest time.

    How did you collect all those worms you put in your UWB?

    • @Vermicompost

      Great question! I have three other worm bins: My VermiHut Worm Tower has about 5,000 worms ua-cam.com/play/PLimznaPXKV0_jVcRI9rI5xnbAFqNP3WZ_.html my Outdoor Worm Bin made of two 20 gallon fabric pots has about 4,000 worms ua-cam.com/play/PLimznaPXKV08Y-7OifhRa_JBH0b5-nR-O.html and my Tiny Worm Bin has somewhere around 800-1000 worms ua-cam.com/play/PLimznaPXKV09y9X94Q4aNpNzwUoLoVXug.html so I took some out of each of them to add to this Urban Worm Bag. Some I baited out with cups, the VermiHut I just put a tray on top and agitated until the worms wiggled down through the holes and the Outdoor Worm Bin, I just used a sifter to get a bunch of worms and castings. I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching and asking a great question!!🪱🪱🪱

    0atrick, have you had any particular problems with your 2- grow bag system? I've been thinking of setting one up, like yours, in my backyard. I d like to have some worms outside, without breaking the bank to do it.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Рік тому +1

      I absolutely love my Outdoor Worm Bin made of two 20 gallon fabric pots!! I've been doing temperature test with it recently and the temps swings are far less than the outside temperature so it keeps warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer and it drains so rains are no issue for me (here in Florida) The edges do dry out quicker in the dry season (winter for me) so it is my only worm bin where I occasionally add water after I add a lot of dry bedding. In 2 1/2 years of running it I have only had one critter make a little hole in it, and I just turned the outside one 90 degrees so the holes are covered. The critter never came back!! Occasionally I'll get a baby frog or lizard in the top folded down part of bin, I think to hide from predators and keep warm. And occasionally I'll get black sugar ants trying to hide their eggs/larvae in the top flaps as well. I fix that by opening the flaps up every 3-4 days and eventually they realize it is not a good place to store their eggs/larvae. We have lots of different kinds of ants and no types that would eat worms have ever shown up. Soooo...for me I've had nothing I would call a big problem/issue. It is my most productive and easiest bin...and the cheapest!!! So I say go for it!! If you are in Texas, just monitor the moisture and temps a little more and you should be good to go!! I also suggest red wigglers since they can tolerate pretty big temperature swings! Hope this helps!! Thanks so much for the question & for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

      @@Vermicompost Thanks, that really helps! In Texas, yes, that's what I'll need to do for climate control. I think the bags being right on the ground could help with that.
      Sorry to misspell your name, Patrick. And a mighty fine name it is.

    I am wanting to get a cardboard shredder for bedding. How long have you been using the 12 sheet shredder that you have listed? Have you had any issues with it. Thanks you

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Рік тому +1

      That shredder is a beast!! if you get it make sure it is the MICRO shredder (12 sheet cross cut) to get the really small pieces like I have (make sure it says Micro) I just looked at the order for when I got it and it will be 4 years old on 12 February. The first two years I just shredded paper but for the last two years it has been shredding corrugated cardboard more than anything else...like I said it is a beast!!! Here is a video of me shredding cardboard so you can see how well it does: ua-cam.com/video/rRXWtNT9PSo/v-deo.html I have never had an issue with it!! Thanks so much for watching and asking about the shredder!!🪱🪱🪱

    Cani use vermi compost if i dont have a normal compost

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  4 дні тому +1

      Absolutely! It is the quickest way to get compost that is ready for your garden right away without having to sit and age. You can treat it like you would regular compost. I use it for my seed starting mix, to make potting soil, to refresh old soil, I add some in each time I plant my veggies, and I make worm compost tea by using a fish tank bubbler and a mesh bag of vermicompost that makes a liquid you can pour right over your plants! Vermicompost is amazing!! I hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    Nice setup video, good job. I too have a UWB2.0, but it is in a support of my own design and not the UWBCo frame. When I set my bin it I got my bedding and composting started 2 weeks before adding a thousand red wigglers. That way the environment should have already gotten going so in theory the worms could get started sooner than waiting around for a fresh bag to get up an running.
    You did have a nice healthy amount of vermicompost to add with the initial batch of worms and I'll wager that gave them a leg up, right??????🤫🪱

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Рік тому

      Thank you!! That is so great to hear you also have a UWB!! I have heard from a few people that have built their own support as well so I might do that if I need to!! That is a best practice to set up the worm bin first and let it age before adding the worms!! You are correct, since I gathered my worms directly form my three other active worm bins and I included a lot of castings these worms have hit the ground running and they have a lot of microbes introduced with them to get them started!! The more microbes the merrier for a new bin!! Thanks so much for watching and letting us know about your UWB v2.0!! Any advice you want to pass as you see me releasing more videos is always welcome!!🪱🪱🪱
