Thanks for this review, and for your obvious honesty, through details and updates. Your trip, for the road (or trail) conditions as much as the weight you carry and the long time in all weather, is really a trial for any equipment. Hard conditions and months (years) combine to let any fail in design or making show at the end. This time you talk of bags and panniers, but it's the same with cranks, pedals, free wheels, tyres and all... You take them to their limit. And not everybody will do the same trip. Anyway, it's important, when you prepare a trip to focus on the equipment which is supposedly adapted to your plans. I travelled a lot years ago, my luggage were British (Karrimor) and not waterproof, so I had to pack everything in plastic bags... And the seams were worn out on some panniers, or even eaten out by insects on a beach (cotton seams) !!! Nothing is perfect !!!

I run Ortleibs - often quite full.
I would make three precautionary points - 1) The fabric could do with being a little more abrasion resistant, but that is always a trade off. 2) Though they do their job well on the whole, the attachment hooks are made quieter and more efficient by bulking up the carrier rails were they clip on with tape Plus make sure the hook inserts are properly in place. 3) Possibly the biggest problem, but still not a deal breaker, is the shoulder strap. The rubber pad gets in the way when you put the strap into it's retaining hook and there is a tendency for the strap to slip out of the hook.
I took the precaution of also getting the adaptor that turnd a pannier into a back pack. Bit bulky when packed, but a really useful bit of kit.

The PVC-material used in the 1990s by Ortlieb is extremely durable and long-lasting and does not scratch as easy as nowadays material.

I use my same Ortlieb panniers for 25 years every working day cycling to work and back, for biketouring in holidays and for shopping my grocerys all around the year in every weather condition, they are still hold on. No issues. For me Ortlieb ist the best brand for panniers ever.
By the way, what have brands like Tubus, Ortlieb, Magura, Schwalbe, Rohloff, Pinion, Busch+Müller, Sigma, Trelock, Abus, Ergon... in common? Guess!

I have used my Ortlieb panniers for years (no troubles except for broken buckles which I replaced) and never thought to use the shoulder strap to cinch down the top. Thanks for teaching me a new trick!

My wife has the Front Rollers with the shoulder strap. Using it is a fiddly PITA. She carries it and sometimes uses it when carrying the bag for shopping off the bike only. When riding she rolls the top down and clips the two ends together. The shoulder strap travels inside the pannier. Personally I much prefer the Bikepacker/Sportpacker cap-top panniers for several reasons.

I‘ve been using my Ortliebs for about eight years now. Long tours each year over rough terrain. I had a rear pannier hook break early on my very first tour, but got a replacement and haven’t had a problem since. My bike even rolled off a pontoon ferry once into water about 1.5 meters deep. All panniers and the top bag were completely submerged, but everything inside remained dry. Unfortunately, the handlebar bag turned into a handlebar bucket. That’s the trade off between waterproofing and easy access. I still love the Ortlieb handlebar bags, and they’re quite good at keeping things dry in a downpour. Just don’t submerge them. - Great review.

My Ortlieb bikepackers -- used for commuting and touring -- are not that old and daylight is appearing through the bottoms. I don't think basic wear of nylon fabric is an ortlieb fault, I'm just surprised when people get a decade out of theirs. I'm transitioning to a new pair. I'm going to try to use sacrificial nylon bags to absorb wear inside the new pair.

Interesting and well made. Particularly interesting are the "quality" issues with Vaude, which mean a less than optimal manufacturing. One would not expect that when paying a lot of money Vaude asks for their products....
My wife and I have had Ortlieb for many years, we spend every year a long holiday by cycling so we do not ride as much as you do. Also, we are pretty light in what we carry. Having said this, we are VERY happy with Ortlieb classic panniers. No quality issues, and totally waterproof. The system of strap and latch is simple and allows versatility of use (over the shoulder). We have not experienced the bending of the bag that is shown here - I guess it depends on the load one puts in the pannier (no computer for us).
Only minus of the Ortlieb handlebar bag Ultimate, is closing it is a bit annoying. It is clearly made to assure waterproofness, but boy, centering those corners takes a lot of patience, and sometime we are in the cold, or wind, or rain (or all of these).....

Had my ortlieb back rollers for maybe 8 years now. Still going strong after touring adventures, commuting and my weekly shop. Very sturdy and waterproof . The inner mesh pocket has rips in it and I has to replace a clip and a couple of rail bolts that came lose and I lost, but these were cheap and easy to source here in the UK.

Thank you for this nice review, well done! Last week I had a discussion about the same topic - Vaude or Ortlieb - in my bicycle repair shop. The funny thing is that they were pretty much in favor of Vaude, especially because of the costumer service. Their experience with warranty issues was opposite to yours. Ortlieb was always the one that was hard to reach and did not really want to corporate, while Vaude was fast and generous.

Not very surprising as it was an apples vs oranges comparison: They wanted to BUY new products from Ortlieb & send to a fixed address, so of course their SALES team responded quickly. OTOH, they wanted free replacements from Vaude, sent to an address that kept changing, so not so surprising their SUPPORT team was not as quick to respond.

I've bought new Vaude panniers once and they didn't lasted nearly as long as the used Ortlieb panniers that I am currently using. You can find used Ortlieb panniers in great condition for the same price or less as a new Vaude, and you will still get better customer service from Ortlieb.

Wow! Failures with Ortliebs? We have each got a set of the Ortlieb Classics - Bikepackers and Sportpacker as well as an Ultimate Six handlebar bag and a roll-top rack bag each. Most of these are now over 17 years old (my rack bag is over 25 years old) and we have NEVER had any seam failures. We have had a couple of rubs/cuts causing an opening. Each time this was repaired quite easily using SeamGrip tent-floor repair glue. This stuff is REALLY tough; I have a 3" cut on my rack bag that was repaired in 1999, and it is still waterproof and robust. We prefer the cap-top pannier bags rather than the roll-top ones as they are waterproof enough for most rainy riding needs, they enable a bit of extra stuffing, and wet clothing can be stored under the cap without making the rest of the pannier contents damp.
Ortlieb has a really *vast* range of spare parts and repair kits. You can pretty much rebuild the panniers' fittings and change from QL1 mounting system to QL2 or 2.1 without too much difficulty.
One thing with Ortlieb that I have not liked has been their rack-hook inserts. Eventually I ditched these, as they just kept on falling out. Instead I fitted lengths of aquarium tubing (13mmOD/10mmID) with cable-ties to my Tubus rack rails, and the bare Ortlieb hooks with no inserts fit on perfectly, no rattling nor lost inserts. This tubing also protects the rack from abrasion by the surprisingly harsh Ortlieb hooks (I had my old aluminium racks worn really badly by the plastic hooks).
17 years of use including 13 years as commuting panniers. No seam-weld failures, no penetrations nor wear showing. Only last January my wife's rear pannier and one of my front panniers got a penetration hole, probably caused during airline luggage handling. Only because I am a bit tired of the old QL1 mounting system, and because my rear pockets (clip-on small pockets) are showing a lot of fading, I have bought a set of new Bikepacker/Sportpackers and used them on just one 4-day tour so far.

its an interesting compromise to chose PVC free and then rely on multiple bottles of Superglue in single use plastic bottles to extend a non PVC products lifecycle along with the replacement bags over the years and all the plastic parts, holistically would a pvc bag have been better for the environment throughout its entire lifecycle as arguably dozens of bottles of Superglue wouldn't be in landfill (+ the chemicals and their manufacture process in the glue) and the bags / parts you replaced wouldn't be in landfill, or consuming vast amounts of energy and water to recycle the discarded broken parts, and of course all the CO2 used in shipping replacement parts around the world through supply chains and postage etc. these bags would appear to have a 3-5 year lifecycle before needing to be recycled at the cost of energy , water, Co2 in shipping etc. at varying intervals, and arguably now not recyclable now contaminated with superglue, as recycled plastic has stringent guidelines on what it contains to be able to be resold / repurposed.
its not a dig, its a genuine question on how we can do better and make better choices in our environmental impacts, im just wondering what is the true cost of PVC free products as i still own a wet bag from 1995 what performs perfectly fine and will most likely outlive me, purchased at a time when we didn't know any better about PVC and there wasn't another choice, but like i say its now 29 years old and still as good as new no glue in sight and will still be good for someone else to use after me (not that i intend on replacing it), PVC is of course very difficult to recycle, but it can now be recycled, and it if has a lifecycle of 40-50 years then sustainably, is it actually a lower environmental impact overall when compared to the 10 non PVC bags plus 30-40 bottles of superglue you would need in the same timeframe? that's the question for me.

The last one burst just two weeks ago, spewing its contents into the back wheel. Never again Vaude. I have smaller, ortileb panniers on the front, but these have been used less and are as yet intact. Prior to these I used fabric bags, Altura Orkney, and these managed nearer five years of weekly usage. Looking to buy them again.

Hot take here, I only use canvas panniers (tho i have ortlieb ones for my wife) they are just so durable, dragging through thorny bushes in baja, sliding down the road, still solid. When canvas gets wet it swells up, so for short rain it keeps the water out pretty well, it then dries and let's everything breathe. After a week of rain nothing can be kept dry, so some trash bags are a great thing to carry for a lot of reasons

Leider!!
By the way.....

I love my Vaudes. I have Ortliebs in the front and Vaudes in the back. For Autumn and winter touring I needed bigger panniers for bulky clothes for the UK rain and cold. I wild camp. Ortliebs were too small. I just did a wee trip of 500 miles and one of the buckles on my Ortliebs broke.
I love how easy it is to adjust the Vaudes, to move them around and adjust you just unscrew the dials with your fingers. I like the hard backs on the Vaudes and the wider square bottoms. To me, for wild camping, this is makes organizing your panniers under the tent vestibule easier, they can stand on their own.
The hard backs of the Vaudes keeps the shape. The Ortliebs can get rounded weird shapes, requiring more care in packing. Not a big deal if you’re not wild camping. If you are wild camping and there’s foul weather, it’s fantastic to be able to pack quickly and not have to fuss about “shaping” the load in each pannier.
I bought the rear Vaudes for almost a quarter of the price of the tiny front Ortliebs. When the Ortliebs go, I’ll replace with bigger Vaudes.

  • @omare_biketonature

My Vaude panniers seams opened on many sections, definitely bad welding, quality problems! Not even 2,000, it was so bad that I had to saw it if not things could start to fall through big holes, luckily I was on tour during dry season and had no rain but no waterproofness anymore.
I had a good response from Vaude and they backed up their product and replaced the panniers but I was on tour in Colombia and the panniers were sent to my place in Norway, had to pay the import tax in Norway too €60.
A the end you don’t buy to claim warranty and all the hassle that comes with it but to have a product that will last so I’m very disappointed with Vaude and moving to Ortlieb.

We feel the same way, although our Ortlieb “Sport Roller Free” are also starting to fall apart now. We have a feeling it might be related to the PVC free products from both Vaude and Ortlieb, as we have not heard of these problems with the “standard” Ortlieb series.

Dear sir , ortlieb is a bag producer for so many years and their focus is on bags ..second it may be so that the other brand says to produce eco nice but it sees to me that in 15 years time you neem 3 times or four times as much replacement its wurser. 3 many times a problemen arices when something has to be eco frendly. While their einfach no solution is . I look this week for the frist time for bags and loopt good and i came to ortlieb while the intention from vaude was sertainly well reasiond but not meet the standerd for heavy use.....at last a heve respect for you both exploring mother earth nature habitants but certainly the harsness of this kind of travelling and certainly when trucks and cars do not think of the vulnerability of their brother and sisters bikers, good luck on your Journey mother earth..

Just ordered them for cheap from an Online store (Norma24) - they have an action price (maybe old model - don't know and don't care). Hope they are as sturdy as Vaude and/or Ortlieb. The Ortlieb is definetly nice, but it comes with a price tag i have to think twice and i don't use them really often (maybe 1-3 times/year) for multiple-day river or lake tours.

The strap on the top is really stupid on the Vaude panniers, this one is really dangerous in the spokes. We have 10 bags vom ortlieb in my family, we we give our best every year 10000 km, but ortlieb is better.
