  • It is day 3 of the 18m U.S. National Gliding Championships in Nephi, UT, and the conditions are picture-perfect with great clouds, rising bases, and no risk of thunderstorms. The fleet is sent on an Assigned Area Task (AAT) with turn areas at Delano Peak (30km) and Lamersdorf Peak (45km), then back to the finish in Nephi, nominal distance 490 km, 3 hour minimum time.

The video starts 2 hours and 4 minutes into my task when I had another 115 miles (188 kilometers) to go to the finish. To finish in minimum time I would need to average 202 kph, i.e. cover the entire 188 km in as little as 56 minutes. I had at least another 6000 feet to climb to get to final glide altitude at MC4 and my computer predicted that I would arrive at the finish with 29 minutes overtime. Based on this information I decided not to go deeper into the turn area and began to head towards the finish. I anticipated to knock some time off the overtime prediction but nowhere near as much as 29 minutes. Little did I know that my run home would turn out to be a veritable Home Run.
Btw - for the baseball aficionados among the viewers, the fastest baseball pitch in history clocked at 105 mph. The furthest a baseball can fly is 545 feet. Now imagine a distance of 115 miles at 133 mph!
This video is shorter than the last two because I sped up the replay for much of the run home and I overlaid some music to replace the vario sound which would be distorted or unsynchronized. The fast playback allows you to quickly see the line that I followed under the amazing cloud street ahead. Let me know what you think about this form of presentation.
The glider is a Ventus 2cxT high-performance sailplane from Schempp-Hirth. The contest day was on July 2, 2021. Enjoy!

The length of the video is about perfect, keeping to 15 minutes or less allows most people to actually finish watching. Great content, thanks for posting. I’m a student glider pilot

Love all your videos, wish you showed that landing...obviously landing long but looked like a high approach!

Camera stopped recording. It tends to cut out randomly. All of my GoPros have done that. Very annoying. I just bought an Osmo Action, hope this will cure the problem. And the approach was just about right, maybe even a little low as I needed less than 1/2 spoilers. 18 knot headwind.

An aircraft without an engine travelling a distance of 188km at 214km/h …
    Now that is amazing!!!

Nice. I really wanted to see what the conditions looked like at these famous Nephi nationals.
For the teaching side of the video, you might want to mention that the high terrain and high thermals is giving you at least 30km/h bonus speed. I know this is a daily occurence to you, but it's unusual for most flatland pilots.
Were you using ballast? I didn't see you open the valves on arrival.
Finally, hated the music. It made sense to speed up this video, but I would have preferred high-pitched real sounds and/or silence.

Yes, higher = faster @ equal IAS. Everyone was flying ballasted to the weight limit. 53kg/sqm for me, 60 kg/sqm for the JS3s. Every day. Thanks for comment about music. I don’t like it that much either but the sound is horrible when you speed the video up. 3 choices: a) silent, b) unsynchronized vario sound, or c) horrible, sped up vario sounds. I often go with b) and most folks don’t realize that it’s non synchronous but it somehow seems wrong. No good solution.

I am not a fan of the fast playback, or chopped up videos, it kills the feeling of going somewhere. I think of it as "squirrel on meth" video editing. My idea of a perfect video is to turn the camera on before launch and don't turn it off till you land, with commentary about what decisions you make and what affects them.

You must have a lot more time on your hands than most people! Lucky!

@@CarlMarvin Probably not, I just keep watching the good videos till I am done, even if it takes a few weeks. I like to see the tactics/decisions/nuances involved in navigating which you don't see when the video is chopped up.

Noticed a zipper bag on your chest straps. What do you carry in it?

You can find the details on my website ChessInTheAir dot com under Safety -> Emergency and Landout Equipment. I have since replaced the Spot with a Garmin InReach Mini. I am also looking for a better solution to tie all this to my parachute. So the arrangement isn’t quite optimal yet.
