After a few days in Cairo, we leave at the end of the day for Alexandria. The 218 kilometer trip can be done by train, bus or cab. We preferred the bus, and because of the traffic jams, the trip took three hours. We arrived at the hotel in the late evening.
During our stay in Alexandria, we stayed at the Cecil Hotel. Built in 1929 by a French-Egyptian Jewish family, the Metzgers, this hotel is located in front of Saad Zaghloul Square, right in the heart of the city and right on the sea. It is worth noting that Winston Churchill and Al Capone once stayed there. The hotel also appears in the novels of Lawrence Durrell and Naguib Mahfouz.
In Roman times, Alexandria was the second largest city after Rome. Walking on the corniche is like stepping back in time. The place also offers a magnificent panorama on the Mediterranean and makes us discover some monuments of which this monument. First erected by the Italo-Alexandrians, this memorial to Khedive Ismail became, after the Egyptian Revolution of 1952, a monument in honor of the unknown soldier.
The district of El Mansheya, one of the oldest parts of the city which became, from the 19th century, its administrative and financial center. Unfortunately, few visitors take the time to walk through the streets of this area, which is well worth a visit. We can find the Ahmed Oraby square which houses the old Majestic hotel, Temple Menasce, several churches and squares. The buildings are exceptional.
