- On Saturday 17 August I went on a walking tour of six small gardens, and a flower filled street, in Llanidloes, Mid Wales, which were open for the weekend, for the first time, to raise money for the National Garden Scheme.
The gardens:
Compton's Yard Trust
This courtyard garden is behind the popular vegetarian cafe the Wild Oak Café in Great Oak Street, Llanidloes. It was originally created in 1982 by the Trust and is still maintained by volunteers.
The Burial Ground allotment
This packed and productive organic allotment is looked after by Andi and Meg Clevely. It’s adjacent to Llanidloes Fire Station, and full of edible fruit and veggies, including several varieties grown in a small greenhouse. It has been cultivated since the nineteenth century.
Rose’s Cottage Garden
This pretty town garden is full of colourful flowers, shrubs and wildflowers - to encourage wildlife and scent. It has been created on land that was once part of a former flannel mill in the town.
Millennium Garden
A compact and varied community garden with benches and picnic tables around the sloping site. Interesting artwork and features, amongst specimen trees and flowering shrubs. Wildflowers are evident throughout the year. The garden is maintained by a group of local volunteers.
3 Shortbridge Street
At the rear of the flower-filled frontage is a newly developed tiny garden stuffed full of small trees and plants, including a vertical herb garden and a small pond with a fountain. I was lucky and also met Gibson, one of the resident cats.
Penygraig Street gardens
This terraced row of houses running along the River Severn brims over with colourful container gardens and hanging baskets.
The Hanging Gardens
This vibrant community space has been transformed from a derelict warehouse. It features an indoor garden and cafe, outdoor micro allotments, and raised beds for fruit and vegetable cultivation.
National Garden Scheme
The National Garden Scheme gives visitors unique access to over 3,500 exceptional private gardens in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands, and raises impressive amounts of money for nursing and health charities through admissions, teas and cake.
Gardens are open throughout Powys every year (over 60 in 2024). In 2023 Powys open gardens raised an incredible £58,000 for charity. You can find out more about the gardens and future opening dates on the National Garden Scheme website - ngs.org.uk/
Tune
Llwyn Onn | The Ash Grove, a traditional Welsh tune performed by Graham Brand (mandolin) and Jeff Brand (guitar).
Great video, made me homesick for Llani x
Thanks - glad you enjoyed it and hope you can make it back to Llani sometime 👍😀
