Yes Caleb. In fact we use a number of different oils and of course use our imitation bear fat that we make. I made some yesterday with cinnamon and clove oils. We recommend using the mineral/baby oil because it is inexpensive and more widely available to most people.

The poly finish may come off with mineral oil if it is water based,However if it is a higher grade oil base there should be no problem. We oil our oil base lacquer flutes. You should be able to oil it on the inside with no problem. If there is any doubt, test a small area and let it sit for 1 day before doing the whole flute.

That one is really sharp. After I get some practice in and make a few, I want to try hand carving some too.

Hey, we do offer the wax on our website for a reasonable price including shipping! I would suggest to use mineral oil on it first and then go from there. You can message us from our website for additional info. Thanks~ bluebeararts·com

you might want to try hemp seed oil. That's the oil that the old flute makers have always used and it's probably the best all around oil for flute conditioning that I've found.

Doesn't hemp seed oil go rancid after awhile?

Gabriel Gauthier There are two types of hemp seed oil. Hemp Seed Oil for commercial applications and Hemp Seed Oil for consumption. The food grade hemp seed oil will go rancid after awhile. Commercial grade, which can be applied to flutes, or used on other types of wood, has no shelf life limitations.

thanks for clarifying, I'm considering using sweet almond oil with tea tree oil and then making my own wax with sweet almond oil and beeswax for my flutes

We use sunflower oil and flute wax aka imitation bear fat (no animal fat used) which contains tea tree oil. You can also use plain ol' mineral oil.

I have a flute that is finished with tung oil that is made from spanish cedar and another small pine flute with a natural stain, not sure of the finish, what would be the most ideal type of wax and/or oil to use for care and maintenance of these babies?

Have you tried using oils like linseed oil or sunflower oil instead of baby oil?
