Yes Joe Dumars was an incredible 2-way player. Even as an older player (age 33), he hit 43% from the 3 point line making 170 threes in a season, despite not shooting 3s early in his career. His playoff numbers are better than his regular season #s too. He went up against Clyde Drexler in the NBA Finals and Michael Cooper/Magic Johnson in another Finals.. winning a Finals MVP as well. So basically he went up against Drexler/MJ during their primes. Two of the most athletically gifted guards ever. Dude was definitely the real deal. Thank you for viewing the video.
@@sportingpage He went up against these guys, but he didn't exactly stop them or keep their numbers down In your clips it's incredible how easily Jordan went around Dumars and he also had a height advantage. Detroit was a very solid team on every position. Btw, do you know why Mahorn was traded to the 76ers after the 1989 season? There was this feud between Thomas and Mahorn in a particular game even though they had won a championship together.
Dumar's contained the stars he defended at a much higher rate than other players. Of course, no one is gonna stop MJ 1-on-1. And I completely agree with you about this Pistons team. They were an incredible team top to bottom. Yes the Mahorn situation.. I didn't know they had a feud but now that you mention it, it makes sense, considering the attempted haymakers Isiah threw at Mahorn the following season.
@@Jose-sy1je What you have to realize about the NBA is that nobody stops anybody, everyone can score; what you want to do is get 'stops' at crucial points in the game and/or really make a guy shoot a lower percentage while messing up the rhythm of their offense -- it doesn't matter if a guy gets 30, if you make him shoot a low percentage or keep him off the line while that player's shots mess up the offense, then you've done a great job versus a star player.... Remember, Joe Dumars could score and he'd force his man to defend him as well.... Dumars was on the all-defensive team during the late 80's and early 90's.... Think about it, what made Jordan a great defender? He could force you into bad shots, tough shots, and stay out of foul trouble (due to refs a lot of times) while holding his position and recovering well and knowing when to foul -- that's what Joe Dumars did...the thing is he wasn't flashy with it, he just quietly got the job done.
@@Jose-sy1jeDetroit had to leave Mahorn unprotected in the expansion draft & Minnesota selected him. Detroit actually tried to pull off a trade to get him back but Minnesota traded him to The 76ers instead.
Seems like Dumars is just trying to stay out of foul trouble. He knows Jordan is quicker. Seems like Dumars is doing more on offense in this clip. If this is supposed to show Dumars with good defense, I’m not seeing it and I was a Dumars fan. At the same time this is just clips.
Great great historical statistical, knowledgeable, factual, accurate with great detail in memory COMMENTARY! To all the COMMENTERS here👍🏾
Dumars was just solid all around
Jordan said Dumars was the best defensive player to guard him.
He made Jordan have to work hard for everything
Was Dumars really that good? In general I always feel that most guards were too small and unathletic to guard Jordan at that time.
