    When I first played Tooie, i was going in with the mindset of playing a game exactly like BK (with continued storyline), but with new levels. At first, i was disappointed they werent the same exact format, but later grew to love how intricate BT is, and how everything intertwines and how witty the dialogue is (this is one of my favorite parts lol). Definitely like BT a lot more.

    I enjoyed Banjo-Tooie much more than Banjo-Kazooie.
    In every level and in every new part of the overworld you always have new moves to be learn and to this are added also the bosses present in each level and the secrets like the eggs and the ice key that unlock other new moves and the transformation into dragon-kazooie .
    My favorite level is Grunty's Industries

    I see Banjo Kazooie as primarily a platforming game, Tooie as primarily a puzzle adventure game e.g. their Monkey Island. I find Kazooie much easier to get in to and can only recommend Tooie to patient hardcore gamers but fair play to Rare in historical terms for not repeating a formula. (although they temporarily lost their character and boldness to me when they released Starfox Adventures and even Kameo feels like just a spin on Starfox Adventures).

    Spot on summary and comparison. Played both as a kid and found Kazooie to be more enjoyable, simply because like you said it's easy to get lost and confused in Tooie (especially when you're 7 years old!). I found with Tooie as well that once you unlocked cheats the game became almost too easy. Both classics though, keen to get rare replay and take a trip down memory lane!

    One difference that's maybe not as important in the modern day (with high quality ports on the Xbox 360 & One) is that Kazooie had better technical performance. I often wished they had made Tooie with expansion pack support to smooth out the frame rate.

    There's literally just a single occurence of all jingies not being collectible in Banjo-Kazooie as you said. And the funny thing is, there's actually 2 jiggies that are candidate for this, but only a single one will fill the role for each playthrough depending on what you do. These jiggies are jiggies in Gobi's Valley and Freezeezy peak as you mentioned. They're both locked behind a specific move (one behind the speed shoes, the other I can't remember) that is unlocked in the other level. So depending on whether you choose to go for Freezeezy or Gobi's first (which if you 100% until this point are both available), you will have a missing jiggy in that level that you will have to collect after completing the other level. Realized that in a playthrough last year and I though it was a fun fact ;)

    In Banjo-Kazooie when you die you have to collect all notes in the level again, in Tooie you can continue without losing anything, which is so much better. Dying in a Kazooie level is so frustrating and often I quit the game for the day, in Tooie however you can try out many things and dont have to worry about dying.

    Between these two games, I just had Banjo Kazooie as a kid and didn't understand the purpose to completing the game. However playing that game on my phone's Nintendo 64 emulator app, I have gotten used to the controls. I was born in October 1993 so I was 4 years old when that game came out and I think I was 7 or 8 years old when I tried the game out. It was a great game, but at first when I was a kid, I learned I couldn't progress the game without learning any moves to save Tooty from the evil witch, Gruntilda. Some years later here in the early 2020s, I played both games on my phone because we gave our Nintendo 64 to a younger cousin of mine. The same game I played years ago I finally realized I needed to learn some moves to progress later in the game. Collecting 10 jiggies in each of the 9 worlds and 10 in the hub world to make it 100, all 900 of the game's music notes with each of the 9 worlds having 100, collecting extra honeycomb pieces and mumbo tokens to transform into a creature. Freezeasy Peak for example has 2 jiggies that you can only collect if you turn into a walrus. One is if you win the first race against Boggy and the other is the one Wozza has. If Wozza sees Banjo and Kazooie try to take it from him, he will run with it back in his cave until you disguise yourself into a walrus.
    Banjo Tooie on the other hand, yes it was a good game and it had a variety of new moves from the game providing you have collected at least the required amount of music notes, but this game also required a lot of backtracking compared to Banjo Kazooie which only required 2 if you have trouble beating Mr. Vile in Bubblegloop Swamp. I don't like to backtrack more than maybe 3 times. It's a bummer that Banjo Kazooie doesn't allow you to pick up where you left off on music notes and instead makes you start over and try to beat your score if you play the Nintendo 64 version, but it's still the game that knows how to kick some ass if you ask me.

    I've never understood why Tooie is criticized for too many collectibles when in reality he has less than Kazooie.
    Banjo-Kazooie collector's Numbers: 900 Notes (to be collected one at a time), 100 jiggies, 45 Jinjos, 24 Honeycombs and 75 mumbo tokens (the number of tokens needed for each transformation is: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 = 75 tokens) + find 3 times the book Cheato.
    Total collectible: 1147.
    Tooie: 900 notes grouped but in groups of 5 and one of 20 (so the actual number of notes to be collected is 153), 90 Jiggies, 25 Honeycombs, 25 pages cheato, 17 Glowbos and 45 Jinjos. Total: 355.
    In addition, the notes and jinjos are reset in Kazooie if you do not take them all at once unlike Tooie.
    Banjo-Tooie is undoubtedly better than Banjo-Kazooie: it has less collectibles, a boss and a transformation for each level and new moves to learn until the end of the game.

    I think the next step is to streamline their abilities as many old moves were made obsolete by new moves: lose the pads and switches and a lot of the items. Allow Banjo and Kazooie to split up anywhere that villians won't enter, and you can swap between them anytime: musical notes are "ability energy" for ANY special moves and have puzzles peices be required to be transported as specific spots: Kazooie can only carry one Jiggy at a time while Banjo can store multiple while Kazooie's out of his pack.

  • @DetournementArc

    If they ever try a Banjo Threeie or Tooka-Laylee, I think it'd be good if the first 40% is a BK1-style, straightforward run through 5-7 themed worlds; with the next 40% being an unlock for more complex missions that sprawl across multiple worlds; 5% being the final level and boss sequence, and the remaining being post-game content on top of whatever non-compulsory missions are leftover.
    I thought Odyssey's Moonrock missions' habit of remixing ideas introduced in various disparate levels was really neat, but found it sad that they were usually confined to isolated challenge rooms, so it would be nice if that idea could be executed again, but Bigger.

    I love banjo kazooie and when I first played tooie back in 2000 at my cousin's house I thought it started great and improved the graphics and movement from the first game. Then as I played the game for a few hours I felt myself getting bored,which never happened in kazooie. I've given the game several chances but I've never beaten it. I just feel it lacks the flow and pick up and play aspect of kazooie due to its oversized levels and backtracking and other tedious aspects. Is it a bad game? No. It's just one I personally can't get into.

  • @CleaveTheDragon
    @CleaveTheDragon 7 років тому +19

    I think your argument with Kazooie being more linear only stems from the assumption someone playing is a style that completes a level in one go. The problem is that's always been an *option*, not a *requirement*, which is what draws people to liking Kazooie more.
    If someone wants to get a few jiggies in Mumbo's Mountain and leave and come back, they can do that. Having the ability to complete a level in chunks or in one go is up to someone (the only real "requirement" making someone do so is notes).
    I feel that Tooie only adds on complexity by drawing out the steps involved in accomplishing what would be simple tasks, and on top of that, making you traverse more empty levels to reach the areas of interest. The levels in Kazooie are smaller yes, but they're also more closely packed, and I almost never felt like I needed a warp pad, which only barely help in Tooie.

    • @PostMesmeric
      @PostMesmeric  7 років тому +3

      It's true that it's an option, but it's an order the devs clearly wanted the player to move in. If they didn't want the player to visit levels in a particular order, why would levels open in a sequence instead of all being open from the very start? Tooie's complexity is its most controversial design element and it's the #1 reason that I've heard people say it's the lesser of the two. But both linearity and complexity are not necessarily good and bad. It's a matter of preference at the end of the day, and I'd go so far as to say both are good and both are bad.

    • @CleaveTheDragon
      @CleaveTheDragon 7 років тому +3

      "If they didn't want the player to visit levels in a particular order,
      why would levels open in a sequence instead of all being open from the
      very start?" Couldn't you levy this against Tooie too? Those are opened/encountered in a particular sequence as well. All I was saying is that no one is forced to complete a level in the first go in BK, and that they have the option to do so. Same with what levels you tackle, to a point. Sometimes I do Clanker's Cavern before Bubblegloop. Sometimes I visit Gobi's Valley just for the powerup and return to FreezyPeak, or the other way around. The only thing confining you to doing them in one go is the note score, but you still have the option to get as many as you want as long as it satisfies a note door (and that's with the original game. In the XBLA re-release notes collected stay collected I believe, so that version would give you even more options).
      Ultimately I think you could reduce most games into being "linear" if you just looked at the end goals. Both Kazooie and Tooie require a majority of the jiggies to be collected before you fight grunty at the end. Since Tooie *requires* you to visit certain stages before completing other ones, you could argue that makes it more linear in the sense that there's specific steps you have to take first if you want to complete a level now. It's jsut now you'll encounter alternate tasks along the way to divert your attention to first if you choose.

    • @PostMesmeric
      @PostMesmeric  7 років тому +2

      The option is always there, yes, but Tooie's puzzle design is far more open-ended than Kazooie. When comparing the level of backtracking between Kazooie and Tooie, Kazooie is far more self-contained. Tooie incentivizes revisiting levels much more than in Kazooie, since most puzzles in Tooie are affected by things from different levels. This is even more so when things in later levels affect earlier ones. Sure, the end goal is reaching the final boss (same for both games), but the method of getting to that final boss differs considerably. Kazooie's levels are, for the most part, self-contained within a single level, while Tooie's levels are VERY much affected by other levels' puzzles.
      You are certainly bringing about some discussion on this and I'm glad to see it. Thanks.

    • @jarerarebear1765
      @jarerarebear1765 6 років тому +4

      Thanks to the Note collecting, Players are incentivized to Play through the entirety of a level and move on. The only time Backtracking is required is returning to Treasure Trove Cove to enter Cheato's Codes, Finding Brentilda to get the dirt on Gruntilda, and of course the aformentioned Gobi's Valley to Freezeezy Peak backtrack.

    • @isleohagger5455
      @isleohagger5455 2 роки тому

      @Zachary Rudolph, The problem I find is, yours isn't the most imaginative response for a very imaginative game series. The moment of realization of interconnected worlds and how you could test something by going to a connected secret in a past level, or use your brain to imagine elements in the future like a new characters' perspective might be with a current one, all the thinking ahead and behind about things that could possibly be, brings a whole new layer and dimension to imaginative games. There's nothing consistent to Banjo's visionary atmosphere like what Tooie became.

    I do love both games equally when I think about it, Tooie's bosses are amazing, while Kazooie's Hub world and levels and especially last world and boss are fantastic, Kazooie can be 100% finished in around 3-4h while it takes way longer to do that in Tooie, worlds got bigger more egg types got added a multiplayer and replay mode were added but for some reason I found myself playing kazooie way more often than Tooie so I guess I'm leaning more onto that side.
    Could be nostalgia or simply the fact that you have to replay the entire game to redo grunty's furnace fun and final boss ^^" and those are the part I love the most, of course I do have a save file lying around that gives me instant access to the 2 things but still.

    I much prefer Banjo-Kazooie over Tooie. IMO, Tooie is a victim of its own ambition, there are too many moves, the worlds are unnecessarily big, there's way too much backtracking etc. While B-K is much more focused and just straight-forward, concentrated fun.
    Also, I don't like the Metroidvania approach of B-T because you can never really be sure if you're doing something wrong or if you're just wasting your time here because you need another move. Plus, there are so many little things that make Tooie less fun, like collectibles being bundled up and the Jiggy animation completely missing.

    Even though banjo kazooie's more accessible and arguably more "fun", I have to pick tooie. It just felt more creative and engaging than kazooie , the bosses were epic, the moves were awesome and interconnected levels made the world feel more alive. The backtracking can get tedious but only if you attempt a 100% run, otherwise you only miss 1 or 2 jiggies, but hey that's my opinion

  • @Fadeddreams5
    @Fadeddreams5 5 років тому +1

    "That level to level movement is linear. You move freely within the levels, but your progression between the levels in locked within a straight line. This simplicity can make the game's design seem a little dated and uninteresting."
    The Mario Galaxy games and Mario Odyssey follow this same form of progression, so I wouldn't call it dated. Mario Odyssey, in particular, takes Banjo-Kazooie's formula and brings it to the next level. The progression is fairly linear, with the moons you collect unlocking the stages, and the stages themselves are self-contained. However, they're also massive, so you get to the same exploration experience as in Banjo-Tooie without ever having to backtrack or hit a brick wall in regards to where you need to go next. In the end of the day, I play a 3D platformer specifically to enjoy the stages and solve platforming challenges, not to traverse the hub between the levels, which is why I could never enjoy Banjo Tooie. Not when I first played it as a kid, and not when I played it a decade later. Banjo-Kazooie, on the other hand, remains in my top 3 of all time.

    I feel that I generally like games with more inter-connected worlds, but I prefer Banjo-Kazooie as Banjo-Tooie makes its worlds far too complex and confusing, and while I appreciate the backtrack, the sheer amount of it detracts from both the experience & the worlds themselves. I enjoyed Grunty Industries once I found my way around, as well as WitchyWorld, because I could focus on just their tasks for the most part and not have to stress about coming back later with other things. Also Jolly Roger Lagoon is slow and painful, Terrydactyl Land looks so similar to itself I get lost easily, and Cloud CuckooLand is much too spread out.

    I feel like I'm in the same boat. I love the open ended nature of Banjo-Tooie, but Banjo-Kazooie is so streamlined it's a blast to speed run through. And while I see the vast improvements that Tooie made over Kazooie, I still have never 100% Completed Banjo-Tooie. Banjo-Kazooie on the other hand, I was able to 100% in 5 hours. And I've completed it at least 3 times. Tooie is still fun to play through, but trying to complete it is exhaustive. It's like comparing Metroid Zero Mission to Super Metroid.

    Having only just played these games for the first time in 2022, I think they were both good games, as far which is better is hard to say. Banjo 1 is much shorter and to the point, I'd get most of everything in a level in a few hours the first time, but in 2e my first time in a the factory and Hailfire peaks, It was a few hours before the first jiggy. I think overall I would lean to say 2e was the better game though, it had a bunch of "puzzle pieces" to keep track of from different levels and new abilities and stuff to try to figure out how it all fits together, even though a few waste your time looking for a solution in a level you're in only to find its impossible and you needed to solve the puzzle in a later level first.

    I find Banjo Tooie a lot more enjoyable. Like you said, I like how much more open ended it is and how the world is more connected that this disjointed levels of Banjo Kazooie. Another problem is I really don't like how a lot of the Jiggies in BK is just given to you, especially in the 1st world. Now I can understand going easy on the 1st level, but it's ridiculous just how 3 of the jiggies have 0 challenge in getting them. At least in Tooie all 10 Jiggies in the 1st world you have to work for but it's not unreasonably hard. Plus nobody talks about how much more creative the worlds are in Tooie. Kazooie's levels, while enjoyable, were a lot more stereotypical like how the snow level (Freezeezy Peak) had all the cliche Christmas and winter tropes or how Gobi's Valley had the generic desert and Egypt stuff like pyramids and mummies. It makes the levels really forgettable and if I didn't have nostalgia for Kazooie, I would had a hard time remembering the levels. Tooie on the hand does use some basic level themes like snow and water levels, but put its own unique spin on it. Like how the fire and ice level in just 1 level or how the sky level has some very unique aspects to it like racing an aardvark in Olympic style events or a smelly cheese wedge you must traverse to get a Jiggy. It gives the levels its own identity and makes it stand out a lot more than Kazooie.
    I love both games, but I will play Banjo Tooie any day of the week over Banjo Kazooie because it feels a lot more rewarding to play as Tooie's worlds require more effort to complete.

    I got new respect for both of these games. I think the games nowadays can learn from it. Graphics are a big part of a game, but it's after all the experience that's more important. I/people tend to like games that adapts to the choices to the player. Mario odyssey and some zelda games do that too.
    If the game is popular, freely experienced, or nostalgic/old style, they have me. I would like to experience banjo kazooie/tooie on the switch!

    imo BK is the better game because its just so well executed. it's a better and more fun game than mario 64 even (imo). it's very simple but its very fun to play. and its super charming. it might be linear but there is nothing that even comes close to the genius of click click wood in banjo tooie for example.
    BT is great too, but its less successful in what it attempts. sometimes the puzzles are satisfying, such as grunty industries. you really have to think about it. it takes hours before you even get a jiggy, but it's satisfying when you have set everything up, opened the doors, got all the warps, made it to the roof ect. the level starts with all the doors being locked and you need to catch a train inside! but sometimes it's just not very fun to play. seeing a jiggy that you just can't get because you don't have the ability yet so you need to come back later is just not fun. and there's lots of jiggys that are dragged out for the sake of it, this takes away the fun. the game also has more inconsistent music, characters and a bit of a depressing atmosphere, a lot of levels that are easy to get lost in due to bad design (everything looks very similar on most of the levels) I do love it though, and i think the evolution in gameplay is great. i just wish there was a banjo threeie to continue it.
    The general consensus is that rare just went in the 'more is better' direction for tooie, but actually they evolved the gameplay, its a pity we wont see it updated further.

    Banjo Tooie is too much now. Nowadays a game like Banjo Kazooie is perfect to go back and play. Everything is pretty easy to find. Levels are fun, there's some hallenge. Banjo Tooie was good when it came out. I mean there was so much to do in it. I played that game so much as a kid and never even got everything, it was amazing, so much content. But Nowadays? Banjo Tooie is just too much. There's so much content on earth now that wandering around the worlds in Tooie for an hour just to get 1 jiggy doesn't feel worth my time. If I play it, it makes me wanna look up a guide and then what's the fun in playing a collect a thon if you're gonna follow a guide?

    I have a bias for tooie cause as a kid, I guess I had both games and decided to put in tooie first not knowing that was the second game. For years of my life that was my excuse for liking tooie more, but then after replaying both games many times over years (currently replaying tooie for hit 3rd time) I’ve realized I love tooie more because of its bigger levels, it’s difficulty, the fact that every level has a boss, every world has a door that leads to another, and you have so many gameplay Options and ways to do things. You can get a jiggy the traditional way, or you can challenge your self and do it as only banjo or kazooie solo, or hell you can try doing it with mumbo

    I really appreciate this analysis, as I loved both games growing up, and a lot of people seem to look at them as one is good and the other is bad. Both have positives and negatives, but it more depends on your preferred game style. As a kid, I love Tooie's worlds more, and loved the connectivity between them. As I get older (and probably because I have less time and get easily side-tracked), I somewhat prefer the original and how it is self-contained. Both are still great though. Also, now that Yooka-Laylee is out, it is definitely more Tooie-inspired to me. XD

    the backtracking never bothered me, because I don't try to get all 10 jiggies when I first enter a level, I get the ones that I can find, and move on, then I go back to find more when I need them! Tooie is also a lot more fun on the 2nd playthrough, not sure why though, maybe because it's a lot more challenging.
    not gonna lie, BK was a little boring on my 2nd playthrough, unlike Tooie, the challenge is in finding them, not getting them, and when you know where all the Jiggies are, it feels... pointless
    Tooie doesn't have any Jiggies that are just lying around, you need to solve some sort of puzzle or game to get them

    I think Tooie is geared to a more mature or experienced audience, people who play a lot of video games will like it more. Kazooie can appeal to younger and less experienced players which it needed to since 3D platformers were so new. This is its strength over Tooie b/c those who like Tooie better still like Kazooie, Kazooie appeals to a larger audience. I played Tooie when I was 11 but I stopped after I got to the carnival area cause I was so lost. The best games appeal to all ages and levels of experience, Kazooie accomplished this, Tooie didnt

    Tooie because more bosses, more challenges and new moves.
    On another note: While i was playing Kazooie, i felt like i had to grab on ledges for, i don't know, 137 times like in Super Mario 64 did.
    I'm actually glad they added the edge grabbing feature in Tooie. But some jiggies could only be aquired by sneaking up on certain characters.
    In Kazooie, i thought you had to sneak up on the ghost to get the jiggy, but no. You had to go on the seats of the chairs which i thought that was pretty stupid.
    I actually liked the Mr. Patch boss, not because of shooting eggs out of the sky, but the music as well. The music during the boss fight was pretty different than the rest of the boss battles. For example: the Chili and Chilly boss battle music had the exact same music as the stage.
    So, if you're a 100% player like i am, then either game works. But i couldn't 100% Kazooie because of Clanker's Cavern.
    The only part i hated in Kazooie was if you lost a life in any world like for example: Treasure Trove Cove, everything you've collected in that one area will restart at 0 (except for your totals)
