- My carbon frame is broken, and we are still 10 miles out with a storm rolling in. My guide gave me his bike but there's one problem: the pedals are clips and I have on flats! Subscribe! bit.ly/2ovQ8hP

Hellooooooo and happy Tuesday to you all!!
This is part 2 to the crash and frame break I had on the Whole Enchilada during our group trip, and I gotta say.... things took a surprising turn FOR THE BETTER!!!
The walk out started pretty rough as putting weight on my left side hurt pretty bad, but Steve swapped bikes with me so that I could put more weight on the bars. As the storm started to catch up with us, we decided why not give it a go hopping on the bikes and rolling the down sections.... and surely enough (I mean, we are mtbers afterall), this turned into full on riding :P
I still have no idea how Steve managed to ride the bike with a broken frame, no front brake, and half the handlebars, but man am I thankful he did. As I continued to move my left leg things started to feel better and I realized that once I was able to stand up on the pedals I could cruise right along.
The pedals were pretty wonky as they don't give you much to stand on - you can even here my shoes rubbing some on the cranks as I tried to stay steady on the downhills, BUT I was SO STOKED to catch back up to the group and finish what in my opinion is some of the most epic singletrack ever with them.
This was an epic day on an epic trail with some truly epic people. Huge thanks to the guys from Chicago that helped check me out, to Steve for riding my broken bike out, and to Michael for letting me send his bike and flat pedals down that nasty section. Also.... to everyone on that ride for being so patient during everything.
Thanks to you all as well for the amazing support.
Much Love
Alexander
Oh.... and the beer lived.... so cheers!!!
Steve is by far one of the nicest and coolest guys I know. It is a pleasure to call him a friend. Not a shock for him to give up his bike for another person...but for him to walk/ride that out...new respect for the man.
Let's give it up for Steve! What a boss riding that broke ass junker.
Wow, how cool is Steve!
OH YEA! And I should mention we didn't swap pedals because we didn't want to clip Steve into a bike that was in such rough shape while riding down! (yes, we had the tools to do so if we wanted)
The Singletrack Sampler it wouldnt have been any more dangerous for just being clipped in
Flats forever, dude.
you guys should have taken one flat and one clipless each hahahahaha
LOL that woulda been hilarious
Slow moving at the moment just with all the trips both Seth and I had, but we are going to get focused back on it here soon
I love how your level of stoke isn't affected by your crash. Shows how much you love the sport
it's hard to be bummed when riding a bike =P
Hell yeah dude! Especially when you're in Moab, that place is magical I swear
Doesn't care about bike snapping in multiple places... worried about beer exploding in backpack
Beer makes everything okay. Even post ride injuries. (except for when you need stitches)
ReallyNotBob MTB No, beer can make stitches better too.
STEVE IS THE REAL MVP !!!!
Anyone else ever ridden like this? Or even worse.... flats on egg beaters!?!? Massive shoutout to Steve (owner of Chasing Epic) for both riding out the broken bike for me and making it so that I could continue with my group to enjoy such an amazing trail. Fun fact: he was running Strava during the ride out and somehow landed in the top 30% (steve correct me if I'm wrong please) of riders this year!!
Egg beaters 1 all day every day with flats to work, school and internship. But the bike got stolen.
Top 30% on a few segments, but top 60% for the longer ones... I'll take it with a broken frame, half a handlebar, the wrong pedals, and only a rear brake!
Yes! When I first got my first MTB bike there were no flat pedals available at the bike store, so a coworker gave me set of egg beaters he was going to toss out. My first two rides on a new bike after 15 years of no bike riding were on egg beaters on trails. Not the greatest way to start back up, but it was still fun!
So what you're saying is... Wearing clipless shoes and riding flats makes you a faster rider! Does running the bike without a chain help also!? These are the important questions that must be answered! Someone get GMBN on this STAT!
The Singletrack Sampler I
There are many awesome points in this video. 1stly Steve for giving up his ride for someone injured in pain to take a broken bike back and secondly sts for when passing anyone on the trail having the presence to ask if they re ok. Awesome people
Special place in Heaven for guys like Steve! Like button smashed for STEVE!!!
It's super awesome that you didn't let that nasty fall break your spirit. You have such a genuine love and appreciation for the sport that is truely admirable
something that always keeps me going and having fun even when SHTF is someone once told me "no one wants to hear the story of the trip where everything went right" and i can always keep my spirits up when i start mentally complaining by reminding myself "this will be a cool story though"
Your attitude towards life is super inspirational! Pushing through adverse circumstances, yet still making the best of it! Heal up that leg and enjoy the rest of the season!!!
thank you for that Edward. Stoke for season is high!!
Yeh, I felt bad for you riding clips in your flat shoes. I hope your injuries heel quickly and thankfully you didn't break something! Steve really did you proud dude allowing you to finish the ride and video.
The MTB community is frickin awesome!!!!
Thank God someone is seeing the message here clearly!!
I think after a crash as bad as that, I would have had a very steady ride home thanking my luck that it hadn't turned out worse.. Thos broken, sharp bars could have really done serious damage if you'd fallen onto them dude.
God damn, Steve, jumping from clips to flats on a charitable whim, rolling down that chunky fukken' trail like a runaway boulder on that broken piece of Spot shit with an uneven handlebar and no front brake, _and_ reaching the group before the storm hit or the sun set? That man's a fucking monster! ✌
All the clipless trouble is still better than having to ride a hardtail while messed up, so I still consider you lucky to have had a squishy to finish the trail, dude =P Stoked to see what's next on the channel!
That was epic. Amazing trail and even jacked up pretty bad, on a diff bike with those tiny clip-less pedals sampler rode really well. Crazy.
Dude! Lumped up and wrong pedals and you’re still going way faster than I could. Broken But Not Buried like a mofo!! (Props to Steve!)
9:54 freaked me out dude! I didn't know where you were supposed to go there haha. DONT TURN RIGHT ALEX! :D
lolol I just looked again and there is definitely a moment where it kinda looks like I'm taking a hard right (RIP)
When ever I get injured I just want to get home ASAP. Definitely this was a video intended to give great motivation and well rewarded at the end, thanks!...be careful out there dude.
Dude .. I feel your pain while watching the video .. I broke my ribs on the left last year with internal injuries etc. and had to finish the trail and drive to the hospital by car .. Iam happy ur OK.. You are a personable person and your videos inspire a lot of people .. Keep it up 👌 Greetings from Germany
Steve is legend
I just want you to know how much respect I feel for you right now dude.
You've shown true professionalism and integrity following "Spot-gate" and MASSIVE shout out to Steve (Chasing Epic) for being such a legend and helping you enjoy the group ride after your smeash! LFRHGS! Yeeewww!
Thank you JB, I really appreciate that man.
thank god the beer was okay ;)
My lame theory was they didn't swap pedals so they could get to the beers faster hahahahah :D
you have to prioritize...
I did the that once on the whole enchilada. I shuttled all the way up
And the bolts on one of my cleat fell out. I wrapped an inner tube around the pedal to give it a little grip but it was still was terrible. When I FINALLY got to the bottom I saw that my cleat was laying on the floorboard of the van. If I had only looked......
This reminds me of my ride at Porcupine Rim last fall. I went OTB off of a drop during Upper Porcupine SingleTrack and rammed my right inner thigh into my right hand brake lever (somehow the bars spun completely around as I flew through the air). Ended up bending the brake lever and bruising up the inside of my thigh really badly. Like you, I found that riding down was easier than walking, and for the most part didn't have too much pain aside from getting on/off the bike. Swinging my leg over the bike was killer. Once I got back to camp the pain really started and bending my leg wasn't too easy for a week or so as it healed.
Glad to see you made it out!
Shout out to Steve! Glad everything else went well. Good job Guys!!
Dude it's crazy how you were able to recover and ease back into the flow despite your leg hurting and a major setback. Cheers!
Nevertheless i'm eager to see footage of him getting up the following morning! 😂
(we've all been there)
Once the escape a dinosaur Adrenalin wears off
This is what I love about your videos: you show all sides of the sport. It's highly educational seeing what can sometimes happen and how to deal. Thanks and keep rockin'.
Epic adventure man, I am happy you didn't get hurt too bad Alex. Having been a marketing guy at a couple of brands in the bicycle/moto industry, I can honestly say that Spot's horrendous post on the initial video was a terrible PR mistake. It's always a bad thing when someone gets hurt, how a company handles things afterwards makes all the difference.
And it got only worse for them when later it was determined that the frame broke not because of use and especially not Alex, but because of _bad design._
hope your not too hurt , I'm still dealing with a shoulder injury from over a year ago. no surgery yet, just riding it out. some days no pain, some days insane!! good luck man.
Hate that happened to you. Your attitude about the situation was awesome though. Surprised how much you were able to ride out and I’m glad you got to enjoy some of the ride with the crew.
I went OTB a week or so ago for the first time, I wish I had the wreck on video. Managed to somehow do a tuck and roll, my left hip wore it the most but I ended up right back on my feet. I am really happy you and the beer only a little shaken up!
One thing I love about riding flats, I don't have worry about forgetting my shoes. Done the flats with clipless a few times.
Nasty crash dude.I hope your leg is ok. As a trail guide, mtb guide like that dude I know how bad it can go when equipment fails...Last time I must run 5km slightly uphill and go downhill 10 km whit no chain/broke rear mech rental bike while other guy took my personal bike. Running 5km at 1800 meters at 35ºC Spanish hot August weather makes you question one or two things about life in general. Big respect for that guy!
Steve is such a sport! Kudos to him!
I think we just need to make the term "To be a Steve" something.
Yeah, they totally steeve'd it! 😂
WWSD... what would Steve do?
This is amazing! You rode harder than I probably ever would at such a location and that with a hurt leg/hip and normal shoes on clipless Pedals. You shredded it!
Awsome video! I am thirteen years old from Ireland and own a Haro frontside bmx! I live in Cork,Ireland and there is a really difficult DownHill Trail beside my house! It is one of Ireland's hardest MTB trails! Keep up the awsome work:)
i love that even with clipless pedals and hurting leg you still shredded harder than most of those dudes
Dude i have really been enjoying the content something about the last two videos made me watch from beginning to end great job, because i have ADHD.
Alex you’re a beast. You still slayed that trail
Great video, scenery is fantastic, and your enthusiasm is contagious. Can't wait for dry weather here in loui KY. so I can ride.
I need to go to MOAB I hope to do it next year with everyone!! Stoked about this one! Good job on the ride down after the injury!
5:57 I’ve been saying that my whole life 😂 ✌️😚💨
Hope you get to feeling better and get back your stoke. Had a big off this weekend myself on Kokopelli in Grand Junction
There's something to be said about Moab and the Chasing Epic crew that everyone still had a great day with such a downer moment happening mid-ride.
Also, @5:56... You're in Utah, not Colorado! ;P
Joe I couldn't agree more dude! Chasing Epic doesn't mess around, and it's going to take more than that to stop our fun! Also... XD
Steve you the real MVP!
Even with clipless pedals you still rocked it!!
Glad to see you were able to get back out
I think you secretly have a pet peeve of people stopping on the trail. I know I do haha.
It's crazy what a few Advil will do. Your a beast bro, glad you made it out ok.
Steve is a hero!
Great attitude, Alex. I hop you’re not too sore after that!
You saved that Oscar Blues Throwback IPA... Amazing, successful ride bro 🍻🤘
Steve is a hero!!
I took a nasty spill on Section 16 out in CO yesterday, had to finish out my ride in pain as well (not nearly as far though). You are an inspiration to help convince me to get out and make that trail my b*tch next time around.
Unreal man, but such a sick ride. Love the channel and progression. 🤙🏼
Nice job getting out of there in one piece Alex 🤟🏻 now rest up and look forward to seeing your next instalments 🙌🏻
Steve is a bad ass! You go man!
True friendship right there!
Thank god the beer is ok 😂
I mean... it woulda been an absolutely tragedy if the beer didn't survive!!
That's so cool how the beer made it. I was little worried.
Advil kicks in at.....min. 8! stoked that you were injured but still asking if others were ok!!! #goodonya!
Dude, you shred harder when you have a super injured side and wrong pedals than me on a perfect day😂
great vid again man love your channel and seths
Glad to hear your doing better and that you weren't seriously hurt
thanks Nick, I appreciate that man
You ride flats on cleat pedals better then I ever would riding flats on flat. I like watching your videos.
FLAT SHOES ON CLIPLESS PEDALS ... thats the only way I ride. Nice wipeout brah!
Those clipless pedals must have just felt like slippery little nubs! And you still managed to shred pretty fast 😂
....SO happy that you didn’t get badly injured Alex🙌🏻
Nice riding on clipless with flats whilst injured! Hope you get better soon.
I've had to ride on those little SPD pedals with gym shoes when I forgot my bike shoes. Not an easy ride! You did a great job after that crash
I know Dave really well. He was our ranch manager. He is an amazing rider.
Finally! Footage that represents what I would look like. Especially on those climbs. Glad you came out of it relatively unscathed.
Edit; Nope! Check that. You're still riding stuff that would make me pucker like it's nothing.
yea, even injured with flats on egg beaters he still rides faster than me lol
Nice video. You, Seth and BKXC are the best
That's a really good friend. Being out there alone would be bad juju. Great video kid.
Alex, i had a dream last night where i met you and brian, it was lit. So happy you got the van dude, I have been a fan for a LOOOOONG time. So proud of the progress man. Great Job> :P
hahaha dude that's hilarious. Maybe one day we make it a reality though. thanks for sharing the stoke!
Dude, you epic'd! Been there, the best feeling is getting back to the car. I have to say I'd probably prefer an MTB epic over all my multi-pitch trad epics.
Dang.... Steve is the real MVP.
Man You Rock!!! lmL
You're The Epic Track Sampler!
I know how u feel buddy, I bailed on my bike and all my weight landed on my right hip and I ended up fracturing it. couldn't move my right leg for a few days. I did that last summer and when I move my hip a certain way it's still tender. I didn't really feel it till I got home that night and I was laying in bed in pain.
Hey Well done.....hope your ok man .....awesome......good on Steve too what a guy
Hey, Alex, I watched your video before going out for a ride and I fell because I was thinking about your fall. jajajajaaj Thankfully nothing happened to me hope you get better soon. Great video
New video! Day just got better!
Huck yea man, enjoy!!!
Just ordered a T-shirt from tee spring in red going to be dope keep up the good work it just gets better and better
Yo thanks for that Hernandez! Thanks for supporting the channel and I hope you dig the shirt my man :D
Hope the leg is better! I went on a ride the other day (I'm a beginner) and pretty much bottled everything. Practicly walked most of the trail. How do you over come the fear of rocks and big drops?
Way to push thru with the handicap on clipless. Just noticing Tht 2 hike a bikes now per not ride ur normal ride/bike setup. Ur a soldier!!!👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
"I ain't going ham."
*Goes ham*
I don't know how you can have a bad day surrounded by all that beauty!
100% agree
Eres un grande, todo mi apoyo para ti, repara la bicicleta rápido ❤
Hardcore. I was wincing through the entire vid man.
Steve is the MVP
Way to take one for the team !
Please go into more detail about the crash and why you think the frame cracked
I seriously thought that the SPOT bike looked real good and even started googeling it for some specs. That was before the bike cracked. Closed all the tabs again :D
And now that it was determined that was because the frame design is rubbosh, you are even more justified.
Feel better Alex
I feel like for every YAHH BOI! an Angel gets a beer.
hahahahahaha
*i ain’t going ham*
Rides like a champ
Anybody: Oh no i broke my bike frame
Alexander: i hope my beer didnt exploded that would have been tragic
That crash sucks. you should have switched the peals from your broken bike to Steve's bike! Much love. Great video!
Injured, on someone else's bike and flats on clips but still rides way better than me!
