Why is animation so poorly treated on blu-ray? Even the Disney blu-rays went through this nonsense. Is there just a cabal of morons in the animation business that hate grain and any kind of definition for no particular reason? How do they look at that kind of thing and think it look remotely good? I don't understand it.
I think they're scared kids will be put off by film grain because bit doesn't look like sterile modern cartoons, but that in itself is fucking irritating considering the target audience is people who saw the original and want it in its best form. It's such a shame seeing old animation being treated like this.
@@ccateni28 Quite a lot, honestly, but the biggest offenders I've seen are Sword in the Stone and Cinderella. Cinderella's colour correction crushes all the fine details out, while SitS looks worse than what Funi's done here with the needless blurring. Google image search "sword in the stone blu-ray blurring" for the insanity. But, they're all like it to some degree.
I agree, if they honestly want to make the highest quality collection for the most hardcore of fans they shouldn't do ANYTHING to the original films. How crazy would it be to not only get an unedited copy of the original films but a completely uncropped one as well. This would give viewers not only an authentic experience, but one nobody has ever gotten before.
I’m so glad you pointed out why the Level sets failed. I finished the Dragon Boxes as they released, I wasn’t going to immediately buy the new Blu Rays. Knowing what I know now about the colors of the D-Boxes make me want something better, and the level sets were that (minus Funi’s aversion to the Japanese title cards). Claiming the levels failed were because of anything other than oversaturation at time of release is bad faith of the highest order. AND THEN there’s still the discussion of the JP broadcast audio and any chance of a proper HD release of DB, GT, and the movies and specials.
I honestly think Funimation hates Dragonball. Have we actually had a release other than the season sets? I suppose we should be grateful for a complete release at all.
With all these problems, we forgot to mention original title cards, next episode previews, and the lost Japanese broadcast audio that the fans so painstakingly collected using recorded VHS tapes and then handed in to funimation. And another thing, no other set except the dragon box set uses cha la head ch la as the opening for the English dub. Even if you watch it in english with original Japanese Kikuchi score, it still plays the American rock theme. just a nit pick but still.
I haven’t watched Dragon Ball Z since I was 4 or 5 in the 90s. I’m hardly a fan anymore. I kinda just wandered in here because I like scandal. This video is so well done and I’m APPALLED. This is a travesty to DBZ fans.
Sadly, they have hit their goal, now. It's official. The fanbase is now officially just as much to blame for this crap as Funimation is. Funimation keeps selling us shit and we keep eating it up. They hit the goal. It's done. You're late on this. They just reached 3,000 and production is now started on this pile of crap.
Frankly, I can't say I'm suprised. From the way they have handled past controversies, Funimation is, and always has been, horribly mismanaged. I love how they say "Oh, we're going to remaster in the ORIGINAL 4:3 aspect ratio!" and expect fans to NOT complain. On a high profile series like DBZ, you should try to properly remaster the series ~even if it costs you a few hundred GRAND~ instead of running a two-dollar program to clean it up. Not to mention the fact that Funi's employees are acting like they are somehow "just as hardcore". I get that you're trying to support your company, but insulting the fans because they don't like what you're doing? No, you are not "hardcore" just because you work on the series; you are hardcore if you want the series to be done right, which it is obviously not. Honestly, I was hoping that Toei was going to remaster the series themselves, and it be a worldwide release. But, as per usual, my expectations were too damn high for these numbskulls.
Ajay scolds Funimation for 10 Minutes, Part 2! Sorry you're so frustrated. I may not be a hardcore DB fan, but you guys deserve better for the 30th anniversary release.
And my respect for them continues to decrease. They have the nerve to do this instead of responding to the blacklash appropriately and try to fix their mistakes. I'm really getting to the point where I feel they shouldn't hold the license to Dragon Ball anymore if they're going to continue doing this.
Kyle Edwards did he say he was going to buy it? Is he not allowed to complain? You want him to act like a brainwashed money machine and just gobble whatever funimation throws at him or not say anything at all? Where is the logic in what you’re saying???
I just don't understand how this shit is so hard for Funimation to grasp. The sheer licensing nightmare of DBZ got a whole bunch of fans who like different things- the Bruce music, Japanese music, different dubbings, etc.. All of those licensing issues are now, essentially, dealt with and are under one roof: Funimation. The video, audio, everything is basically all in their wheelhouse and has been for years. So why in the hell have they not come up with a set that gives us access to the different dubs, soundtracks, and both the preserved visuals (4:3 with grain or cleaned grain) and the widescreen, filtered, saturation boosted visuals (it seriously just looks like they ran a filter over the image and called it a day, not that they had an individual do frame-by-frame cleaning)? Throw it all into one set, set the price basically however high they want, and I'd buy it in a fucking heartbeat. Don't oversaturate the market with shitty releases and then wonder why everyone's not buying *all* of them when not a single one of them can appease all fans, and none of them appease the hardcore fan. Jfc, Funimation.
With the part about the edges at 2:43, I'm reminded of the yellow bricks which all have this weird pillar of different and sometimes better colours on the right hand side of the screen.
Am I the only one who thinks the raw footage with all of the film grain looks amazing? The smeary Blu Ray footage looks like those godawful filters you can use in SNES and GBA emulators. It compromises too much of the intended artistic vision.
the grain is nice once in a while, but Really to me, it depends on the scene in question. but they really shouldn't mess with colors if it's a serious project.
Yeah, no. Listen, we can all agree that the heavily grain reduced, DNR images Funi has shown off take it way too far and as a result there's smeary linework and detail loss, but the moment people start to talk like grain itself is a good thing, as opposed to a defect introduced by the production process that's just hard to remove without causing even more problems in the process is when you lose me. We can concede that grain removal is hard to do right without making the image worse without pretending Grain isn't something that ideally wouldn't be there to begin with.
@@MajoraZ yeah. We shouldn't look at it like it's an important or needed part of the show, Imperfections may help out Rose colored glasses, but it still drops the quality of the overall product If you hate it or not.
@@MajoraZ that's sadly the issue. the grain IS there, unless there were some hidden 1st gen film reels, or every single cell was re-complied and scanned digitally, there's absolutely no way this show can be as clean as originally intended, so these grainy 3rd gen masters ARE the ideal solution (unless there is some seriously magical DNR available, used with care)
@@MajoraZ I'm not saying it's like the ideal, or anything, but if I had to take the grain or the DNR, I'm gonna take the grain (provided it doesn't start screwing with the video to an obscene degree).
the timing of that release and the lack of episodes but heavy price is why they didn't sell..kai ruined any chance they had...people chose to just just buy the orange bricks first before kai or kai..and the dragonboxes….the level sets really were what certain people like this guy wanted...a remix frame by frame without much cropping
I just think they're going way too overboard with all of the post processing. It may just be me, but if I'm spending large coin on a box of a 30 year old anime... I want it to look like a 30 year old anime. Gimme the grain, gimme the flaws, it's part of the show and part of its history

Will you be reviewing the new season of one punch man due to the change in art style? It seems like something you would do and its would be very interesting to hear you point out the changes and details.
UA-cam's processing is just amazing isn't it
i wish we had a release of its pure, original state. even with the beveled and distorted edges
You keep it 100% real and don't hold back. Stay like that bro u nailed it
He's so informative, Timmy Turner wished to get a UA-cam account.
The ironic part is that they're owned by the company that made the Blu Ray
Why is animation so poorly treated on blu-ray? Even the Disney blu-rays went through this nonsense.
Is there just a cabal of morons in the animation business that hate grain and any kind of definition for no particular reason?
How do they look at that kind of thing and think it look remotely good? I don't understand it.
I think they're scared kids will be put off by film grain because bit doesn't look like sterile modern cartoons, but that in itself is fucking irritating considering the target audience is people who saw the original and want it in its best form. It's such a shame seeing old animation being treated like this.
Which blu rays by Disney have this? So I can avoid them.
@@Zikar the best disney restaoration is Pinoccho :)
@@koloth5139 Ikr it's 😢 sad
I really expected more
Koloth only the saga sets
With all these problems, we forgot to mention original title cards, next episode previews, and the lost Japanese broadcast audio that the fans so painstakingly collected using recorded VHS tapes and then handed in to funimation. And another thing, no other set except the dragon box set uses cha la head ch la as the opening for the English dub. Even if you watch it in english with original Japanese Kikuchi score, it still plays the American rock theme. just a nit pick but still.
Angry Ajay is fun to listen to
Ikr
Nah it's nauseating
It's very cathartic.
Does anyone know what happened to Ajay? I miss this man’s content so much!
Some people have started getting the 30th anniversary set so hopefully he'll be back with an update on how it looks.
LegendaryAntiHero I hope you’re right sir 👍
He came of retirement to talk about this set. He quit after Super ended probably wont be back till super comes back.
Time proved you right quickly. Excellent, very clear video, it seriously needed this tone
(pls don't disappear again)
I haven’t watched Dragon Ball Z since I was 4 or 5 in the 90s. I’m hardly a fan anymore. I kinda just wandered in here because I like scandal. This video is so well done and I’m APPALLED. This is a travesty to DBZ fans.
The irony of these 2 Ajay's videos getting more than 3000 likes.
They still haven't hit 3,000 and there's 15 days left. I'm hoping they don't reach their goal if they don't bother to give fans what they want.
@@the-NightStar Uhhh, it still says 2813/6000. The goal is 3,000
www.funimation.com/dbz30th/
Turns out that's units remaining. Oops. That makes more sense then
I'm not even angry
I'm just disappointed
Just wait for 38th anniversary release lul.
"We made this for the hardcore subset of fans!"
"You mean the ones who forked over money for the level sets?"
"Hey look over there, a deer!"
And my respect for them continues to decrease. They have the nerve to do this instead of responding to the blacklash appropriately and try to fix their mistakes. I'm really getting to the point where I feel they shouldn't hold the license to Dragon Ball anymore if they're going to continue doing this.
Exactly my opinion too. Preach brother!
Fully agree. Funimation keep dropping the ball >.
Then dont buy it. Nobody says you have to spend money on something you dont like
Kyle Edwards did he say he was going to buy it? Is he not allowed to complain? You want him to act like a brainwashed money machine and just gobble whatever funimation throws at him or not say anything at all? Where is the logic in what you’re saying???
Well guess what you might just get your wish because Toei Animation is contemplating to cut off from Funimation.
*The red background is Ajay's inner rage*
With the part about the edges at 2:43, I'm reminded of the yellow bricks which all have this weird pillar of different and sometimes better colours on the right hand side of the screen.
Ajay went full British.
You never go full British
*WRATH ASCENSION*
Am I the only one who thinks the raw footage with all of the film grain looks amazing? The smeary Blu Ray footage looks like those godawful filters you can use in SNES and GBA emulators. It compromises too much of the intended artistic vision.
Everyone thinks this except the managers at dunimation
NGL, I actually like the extra grain of the photocopies, a bit. I dunno, it makes the picture look more three-dimensional, to me.
the grain is nice once in a while, but Really to me, it depends on the scene in question. but they really shouldn't mess with colors if it's a serious project.
@@MajoraZ I'm not saying it's like the ideal, or anything, but if I had to take the grain or the DNR, I'm gonna take the grain (provided it doesn't start screwing with the video to an obscene degree).
so sad they cancelled the level sets
the timing of that release and the lack of episodes but heavy price is why they didn't sell..kai ruined any chance they had...people chose to just just buy the orange bricks first before kai or kai..and the dragonboxes….the level sets really were what certain people like this guy wanted...a remix frame by frame without much cropping
I just think they're going way too overboard with all of the post processing. It may just be me, but if I'm spending large coin on a box of a 30 year old anime... I want it to look like a 30 year old anime. Gimme the grain, gimme the flaws, it's part of the show and part of its history
*SWEARS, SPEED, ANGER AND OST, the Avatarian elements defining Ajay's wrath.*
By 2045 we will have an affordable good dbz set! Huzaa!
Not even
You had a typo.

Finally!!! ☺✊
8:28 "I don't care as much about the colours. I can fix that myself." Don't give them shitty ideas, Ajay.
When you're so early the video is still at 360p!
2:28 This is so de-grained and smoothed that it looks like vector art.

This is exactly what we needed! Amazing video thank you for continuing to spread the awareness!
Here from Totally Not Mark, I just wanted to say good job on the video and that you are a great animator.

Talking about the important things here. Speaking for the OG's. Thanks man.
What an EXCELENT video. So, the best way to watch is fan-made versions. RAW video from japanese Dragon Boxes + english dubs & subs.
Netflix having the EVA license don't seem so bad now.
You know I would actually like to see an entire video based on how the home releases of anime are made.
Good on you for vocalizing why the release should not be supported. I hope Funi clears the wax out of their ears and listens.
That grain removal is really bad.
Funimation seems to have a lot of Blockheads working for their organization.
I don't even watch Dragonball anymore but seeing this and the previous video still got me mad as hell... What the hell is Funimation doing?
FUNimation just turned into Bethesda in a matter of seconds.
Dude, those before images with the grain look so fantastic.
Buffy fans are dealing with the same incompetence with cropping, color correction, and grain removal for that series' release. Some companies just don't care about the quality.
Ugh I saw that too. Their remaster of the show has taken away the way it was meant to look. Doesn’t even look like the same show.
Ajay is schooling funimation woah
It's more like he's talking sense to a brick wall. Funimation isn't listening no matter what he says.
@@the-NightStar it's such a shame they are growing a negative reputation, why cant they listen to the fans. Especially Ajay who knows what he's talking about its literally his job to understand animation
How do people still give this company money? I stopped buying items from them years ago.
Because smart intelligent buyers are always in the minority thats why man! (shrugs) The fans in the know, know when to avoid; double and triple dip re-releases when the company keeps on doing the same old sh-t? Fan endeavors even if put on Dragonball websites will offer up far better; fan-made remastering efforts than the official company these days!
"They've put Gohan in the oven for too long and he's coming out looking like a lobster." You've made my day.
Funimation treats Dragon Ball the same way AtGames treated and released really crappy emulation consoles.
It's actually pretty sad Funimation is doubling down on their mistakes
Funimation is incompetent, just give the license to someone else already. Anyone else at this point would be an upgrade.
Don't kill me with cancer
The raws look amazing, love that old grainy look.
On Discord, a FUNimation rep said to send detailed complaints to funimation.com/support. Don't worry about which category you choose, they said the care team will sort it and send it to the right people. Please send messages people, this might be one of our last shots at a proper release of Dragon Ball Z.
As if they're actually going to check their support messages. @ them on twitter, reddit, discord, etc not somewhere where your voice can be boxed up and shoved in a digital corner
Good thing to point out, but I sent messages to them basically everywhere including their support site just in case.

The new release looks very blurry and overlighted. It just hurts to look at it. No realy I got headaches
If the last video was Funimation making Ajay go SS2, this is Ajay Kamehameha blasting them into oblivion.
Don’t know why you used the picture of a 2 legged cat for Mr. Nostalgia but I approve
Great vid as always
Thank you for the video I had no idea
Level Sets failed because Funimation was asking for too much while giving the fans too little too late. Its their fault as a company, not ours. A good company learns from their mistakes while a bad company like Funimation never admits their faults and continues to repeat them. If not for Dragonball Z, nobody would even know what funimation is.
It's encouraging that they responded to the first video/related criticism, hopefully they continue to feel the fans out and change course!
"You get the smeary, broken, fuckery on the right."

"They aren't releasing until November, there's still plenty of time." To fix 291 episodes of footage? I don't know...unless the plan isn't to release it all as one set.
yeah, no, i'm not going buy this set at all since it is a dishonest mess and looks, simply put, ugly.
i own S1 of the organs bricks and it doesn't look good, it was a present and still enjoyable to watch every now and then for the old funi dub, but that's about it.
Can someone explain to me how a box set of season 1 of "The Simpson" from 2001, looks exponentially better than a dbz blu ray release in 2019?
Because it was made by competent people who knew what they were doing?
Ajay's pissed. He's going super saiyajin. Also, much apprecieted for the vid, but I also always wondered if there's a cool version to watch classic kid goku db.
I’ve never seen Ajay more pissed
With the kick Vic movement and and this garbage, I really hope Toei takes away dragon ball away from funimation!!
Ummmm... Unnecessary that will just hurt dbz while we want it to go up. Kick or stand pick your damn sides after the damn trial. Funi had to do what they did, they just didn't need to talk about it. Anyhow these remaster and TOP and Broly are amazing with funi. So you can eat your comment.
Elvick exactly
I just want the full 4:3, with the original Japanese audio the fans were able to save
I want that and the option of American music. I know it's not popular but people like me would love that option
All the comments that are against you are pissing me off so much. from me I would like to say thank you for doing this and I hope it makes a difference. I'm really passionate about watching dragon Ball z in the best possible format. I'm so obsessed with the level set detail and it's my dream to watch the whole series with that level of quality. I would pay a lot for it. You are definitely making a difference thank you.
I don't know if it's my colorblindness but aside from the floor tiles and smoke I don't notice much of a difference.
Why can't funimation just give us all a dvd/blu-ray release of the original TV version
