Käthe Kollwitz's creative process brought to life, "Sharpening the Scythe"

- Watch Käthe Kollwitz's vision take shape in an animated video that traces the evolution of a single artwork. In "Sharpening the Scythe," one of Kollwitz’s most powerful prints, an elderly peasant woman grips the blade of her farming tool, preparing it not for cutting crops, but to take part in a revolt. Watch how Kollwitz arrived at this potent image using her confidence as a draftsman and printmaker.
Kollwitz develops and abandons entire compositions as she revises the work, deepening her focus on the woman and intensifying her emotion and strength. As Kollwitz works, we sense her resistance to tropes (a male figure helping the woman, for example) and her painstaking search for the clearest possible message.
You can see the different editions of this print in person in the exhibition Käthe Kollwitz, on view at MoMA March 31-July 20, 2024. www.moma.org/calendar/exhibit...

it's amazing to see the process reconstructed like this, especially with the animation filling in each stroke in turn
I was privileged to visit the Kollwitz gallery in Berlin late last year and to see the national war memorial statue (Pieta). Wonderful.
I am Printmaker myself and own two Käthe Kollwitz etchings (the first one showed in the video), its great to see such reconstruction, very interesting. Thank you very much for this video.
Really interesting explanation.
What a fantastic explanation of an amazing picture. Thank you
Excellent! What a treat!! Thank you!
I find Kollwitz’s artwork so inspiring!
Well done! We have a large collection of her work at the Art Gallery of Ontario, AGO. She did some amazing work.

I shall relent for my artistic mishaps.
Wonderful artwork ❤❤

Damn
Incredible process
WoW…well done everyone with everything, simply fascinating.
briliant!
love
Everyone from every culture would understand what's inside of her works. Then it becomes art I guess.
In real life, I have never seen such a position of the hand (rather dangerous) or of the whetstone (which I can't really see) to sharpen a scythe (and I have seen some and even done it myself). Without the title, I would have never understood what this woman was doing. Pressing her cheek on the blade?
Artistic symbolic message?
The peasants war was a doomed rebellion against landowners. This is an early 20th century piece of communist propaganda depicting (as ever, one dimensionally) the dignity and struggle of the working people. Never expect a communist to know how agricultural or industrial tools are used or maintained.
Of all Artist's self portraits hers is still the best . also a new Goya EB
